  1. Taran is sponsored by SVI, but he could perform at the same level with the Glock. GForceLizard's observation is what we've found to be true in testing a wide variety of shooters with different skill level and well set up Glock, M&P, XD, 1911 9mm and SVI 2011 .40 minor. There was no statistical difference in performance across the platforms, although there were preferences in what gun felt the best to the shooters. IDPA was founded as a "NOT IPSC" shooting sport, and I think that has much more to do the divisions than actual performance of the firearm. They had to do something to separate out the "fancy gamer guns" while having a division for the service pistols play. By allowing those same services pistols to be modified where they can perform to the same level as the "fancy gamer guns" the SSP ESP division became a purely political separation. If you are shooting in SSP and your ESP buddy beats you (or the other way around) you should be aware, it wasn't the gun that made the difference, you'd better go practice.
  2. I know and Dave beat him with a Glock Sort of like segregation didn't make sense to folks and it did to some. I spend a lot of time making mechanical evaluations, so that is how I tend to make my conclusions.
  3. I feel the benefits of ESP are pretty clear. Extended Magwells, SingleAction, Permanent grip enhancement, etc. These things should save you time in operation of a weapon, or enhance your operation of a pistol. So, you should in theory be able to shoot it faster. Therefore, Classification Time Differences. An Enhanced Gun might not save you 10 seconds over a classifier, but times had to be set somewhere. You hit it on the head, "you feel" they should make you a better shooter, but the testing I've done in the different guns head to head over the years shows on thing, the pistols in question can be driven just as fast as each other IF you know how to use that platform. The time seems completely arbitrary, 10 seconds is just silly. Take a Glock the dominant SSP pistol, put a decent trigger, sights, and it doesn't need a mag well since for some reason filling in the hole that makes the mag well suck is legal to do, then you have a gun that a skilled shooter can shoot to the same level as the tricked out 2011. With the addition of the M&P to the SSP division, you have two pistols with single action like trigger (once worked over a little) and huge magwells compared to a 1911. The ONLY reason I bring this up is because if you think the difference in the performance comes from the fancy 2011 versus a decently equipped Glock, M&P, XD, then I know a bunch of folks who would prove you wrong by performance. That is why I judge my "real" finish from the top of the list down. Jerry, That was AWESOME!
  4. Production - Minor and 10 round, so not the same comparison. Taran shoots a lot of Glocks.
  5. Well, for the last 3 years, Glocks beat all the fancy double stack 2011's. I'm not sure how the folks at IDPA HQ make this square with the classifier time differences. I know that I shoot the same times with my G17 as I do my SVI 2011, so to me it is quite silly, but YMMV. 2010 ESP Champion: Taran Butler Master 255.46 (69) SSP Champion: Dave Sevigny Master 246.30 (58) 2009 ESP Champion: Bob Vogel Master 230.47 (38) SSP Champion: Dave Sevigny Master 222.56 (41) 2008 ESP Master DC Vogel, Bob OH 189.99 SSP Master DC Sevigny, Dave GA 184.36
  6. What is HOA? High Over All: The best score of the entire division. HOA is a USPSA award. The IDPA equivalent would be DC or Division Champion. I meant the lowest time of the whole match, all divisions. The SSP ESP separation is just silly IMO, but it does make more "winners."
  7. We've done a bunch of barrel shortening barrels and welding the Pig on to make 16" with a full length hand guard, and I think they have all been for cool factor With the Pig, you can put your hand out there as the gasses go forward.
  8. I've never had to dump a round in IDPA to win HOA, so I don't get the thinking that some folks use to justify dumping round to themselves. Personally, winning outside the rules of the game, would seem a pointless victory. IDPA is very subjective and if you think breaking the rules (regardless if you can) to "beat the suckas" who play within the rules of the game you are paying to play is the way you need to roll, well that is up to you. When I shoot I want to show shooters who don't shoot the other game, that you don't need to break the rules to win, you just have to shoot and move accurately and faster than everyone else.
  9. 1. Ask a SO if you have ANY doubt that you might do something that they might issue a penalty for doing (especially if you shoot -0's fast.) 2. Follow the stage description EXACTLY as written and the briefing. 3. Hit your cover marks on the first entry into a position. 4. Know when to take -1's. 5. Practice reloads with retention so you don't rely on slide lock reloads when you have room to load behind cover. 6. Aim fast. In large part IDPA ONLY shooters have been trained to shoot slow because of the .5 -1 penalty. It is a game, so everyone who is paying for them to keep score is gaming every stage. Those who do more than required by the stage description are just playing their own game with their own self imposed rules.
  10. What are you trying to accomplish? You can bead blast anything that you can fit in the cabinet. If you blast a hardchromed part with an abrasive media and very much pressure, it will not be coated any longer.
  11. I wouldn't go swapping parts for "recoil reduction" unless you know what and why you are doing it, and I was ribbing Roy, as I like parts I can make the way I want and the EGW stop is the only one I stock for that reason.
  12. Your photos answer your own question, your current sight cut is small (can be milled out to a Navak cut) and then the base he makes can be used. Just send it to him and you'll be taken care of
  13. I use them, but maybe I'm not serious enough for Roy If you start with a square one, you can make it any profile you want, you don't have to leave it square, you can make it to fit what you want to do. Adding a heavy mainspring also ups the trigger pull, changing the timing with the FPS doesn't.
  14. You are missing that Rich made a base that fits in the Novak cut. Just call him and buy one if you want to save a lot of time and money.
  15. Shoot your best and the rank will follow. Too many are afraid of the deep end of the pool, so congrats on having the gusto to go for it.
  16. See what happens if you twist your wrist more to the right on the SHO shots and more to the left on WHO. 1-3 degrees past 12 O'clock.
  17. I don't know who built it, but it looks like a Tanfo slide top with a standard 1911 slide with the top and end milled off. Unless there is some unique in the slide besides that, any smith should be able to make another slide for you.
  18. What class you are doesn't really matter, you will either win or get beaten by the same amount no matter the class you are. The size of the butt you get handed to you is the same, it is just the lens you look at it through that changes.
  19. Japeto has some good points, but if you have a backlog of a couple hundred guns, get some help, you can afford it I have a great crew, but we couldn't survive having people coming to the shop to get work done, it just kills too much time with people wanting to visit, so I can empathize with smiths that work that way.
  20. and misguided at that if they are requiring you rack it on the draw...
  21. Travis has an AMU vid on YoueTube on a shot, load, shot on the same popper before it falls, with a Glock if I recall correctly.
  22. I'll add that if you intend to by a stock guns, put sights on in, refinish or make other upgrades and sell it "upgraded", you need a manufacturer's license. If you take money for work and you write receipts, CYA.
  23. IF you can't come up with it all at once, I would suggest that you put what you would spend on parts away when you can, then eventually you will have enough to buy a good used gun, or wait longer and get a new one. Do you really want a gunsmith to build you a gun from the random pile of parts you bring them? I don't know of any good smith who likes to do builds that way. I just won't. I'm sure you could find many shops that would keep taking your money until you had enough to buy it if you don't have the "saving" ability.
  24. Deltapoint blows it (and everything else in it's class)away IMO. How come and for what application? Light, bigger screen, lower to the bore without major mods, more rugged design. We are using them on XD/XDM's and AR secondary sights, but I'll be putting them on the Saigas also. Give Beven Gram a call and he'll add to the list. He's done the most breaking of small dots sights of those I know, and he put me on to them.
