I like the new sti tubes with grams spring and followers with a 4mm taran tactical base pad. Mike the feed lips they should be about .380". The tubes out of the box with this combination runs great for me. I get a reloadable 21.
I have a back up for both my limited and open pistols. Last year at nationals I had to use parts from both my limited pistols to get one that would run. Both minor problems. I will not shoot a major match without a backup.
Have you adjusted the lips on your mag. Sounds like they are to wide allowing the follower to come up to far. If it is .40 a cal I think they should be around .390 or so. Call Bobby at Freedom Gunworks to get the exact measurement.
I have always wondered about this myself. I shoot my limited like my open in that I put the front sight on what I want to hit. From the discuss I gather that is what you mean. If not could you go into more detail?
I use the same setup as you do and only get 20 in the tubes that are not tuned. I have two that Bobby at Freedom Gunworks tuned. With bolen spring and follower and a bolen 4 mm base pad they are a start able 21.
Seth very nice looking pistol. I really like the two Virgil built for me. Did Virgil lighten the rear of the slide on either side of the firing pin tunnel? Do you know much the gun weights?
After reading the posts here about wolf primers I ordered small rifle primers instead of spp. They came in on Weds. I loaded up 200 and went to the range Thurs. They all fired and they are about 50 ft per sec. faster than the wsp I was using.
I was using them in my limited pistol and it has a 21 main spring.
Is a fluted barrel legal? Would it not be the same as a 6" sight tracker. I ask this because I have a 6" limited with a bull barrell and had thought about having it fluted. I don't want to get moved to open because of it.
I talked to Virgil yesterday and the sights will sell for $118.00. He is building my 2nd 6" and will put the new sight on. He is also going to replace the old sight on my 1st 6" with his new sight.
As Seth said he is the man.
Their are some many good smiths out there how to choice? One that I have not seen mentioned is Virgil Tripp. He built a 6" last year for me. It looks great and shoots great. Sometimes it pays to spend a little more up front. Another nice thing about Virgil is his price is about the same as a stock STI and less than a stock SVI. His wait time is about a month or so.
The man started the whole thing so how can you go wrong.
John Larson of JPL is a very good smith. He is located in Redmond Wash. If you go to the uspsa web site, under vendors you will find him. Things slow down over the winter here but I think there are two ranges that have matches.
I know you have not mentioned any other gunsmiths but right now Virgil Tripp has one that is for sale at $2550.00. I have one of his 6" limiteds and you cannot beat his pistols. It was for sale on the USPSA classifieds. If you cannot find it there do a search for Tripp Reseach.
