  1. I have found that with my revolver (a ruger alaskan [2 1/2"barrel]) that I lose approximately 40 fps compared to the reloading manual loads I have used. The barrel length of the barrel used for the reloading manual published loads I have is a 7.25 inch, so you can imagine that my loads have to be "hot" to make major in USPSA.

The cylinder gap of the revolver added to the length of the barrel will effect the fps that you obtain, as was advised earlier.

  2. The felt recoil with the LCR will be greater than with an SP-101. The lower the weight of the revolver, the more recoil felt. This also will effect the ability to make efficient follow up shots.

I agree, the LCR is 8oz. lighter but it has a Hogue Tamer grip. The grip is much wider at the web of the hand and It dampens felt recoil well. I did not want to like this gun. When they first came out I thought what an ugly, crappy plastic gun. I looked at the LCR for my wife and I took her with me. She loved the grips and the trigger. When I shot the gun I was pleasantly surprised at the factory trigger, grips, light weight and overall quality. It's easy to feel confident with the gun, it's comfortable.

I changed the sp-101 grips that came with it with the Hogue grips made for it. The factory grips were too skinny for my hands. The LCR seems to be a good revolver, but just not something for me.

  3. I liked the movie when I saw it in the theater and both Willis and Gordon-Levitt acted well in it. Not as dark as some dark future movies, but it would not be a world that I would like to live in either.

  4. I saw a .500 S&W 'snubby' shot in a IDPA BUG stage with full-power 440 grain loads. It was impressive! It was photographed, although I don't have the pic. But, the muzzle flame... monster ball... was about three by two feet. The first target was three yards away and it was blown completely off the target stakes and wound up about about six yards down range.

I don't remember his score, but I do remember the squad opining that... with the .500 S&W... ANY hit on the target should be a Down 0

I would really love to have one of these. Stronger frame than the smith and the 454 is more versatile.

I have been shooting an Alaskan (.454/.45 Colt) in USPSA & IDPA competition since 2007 or so. I shoot "hot" .45 Colt loads to make major power factor, which with only a 2.5" barrel takes a little work. If things work out I'll be shooting it at the USPSA Revolver Nationals.

  5. I heard today they're already over 40 entries for RevNat 2013. Hopefully lots more to come before the end of the year!

I am glad to see the numbers of entries received so far, but I am also glad that there is a little breathing room for me to get my application in. With the holidays I won't have the funds for the entry fee until the first week of January, and I was concerned that it could fill up by then. I figure that if it goes as well as it appears it might in 2013, then it won't be open to just anyone and require obtaining a slot. I don't get around to shoot any of the area matches, so my opportunities to earn a slot to nationals is greatly limited. Shooting sports being my secondary hobby to fencing, most of the big competitions I compete in are fencing competitions.

I really enjoy shooting sports, but the opportunity to wield a 35" steel blade in fencing competition and "stab" your competition 5 to 15 times is so much more satisfying in general. :) Besides I have done well enough to qualify and compete in the US Fencing Nationals 12 of the last 13 years, and am on track to compete in the 2013 US Fencing Nationals. :D

  6. I plan and hope to make this match. As others have commented this is a chance for participants from all divisions to show support for a dedicated revolver nationals. The style of the stages is not as important to me as the match itself being done well. This requires effort in organization as well as in participation.

I want to participate in the match to show my support and enjoy the competition with other competitors shooting revolvers. I have a lot on my plate in spring and summer of 2013, but I hope to compete in the USPSA Revolver Nationals, the US Fencing Nationals (in Epee and Foil competitions [team and individual]), and the State Games of America (fencing Epee). Hopefully I will manage to achieve all of that and do well in all of them.

  7. One thing that helps me is instead of keeping up with the number of shots (6), I instead keep up with the targets that I engage. Cardboard targets require 2 shots and steel requires 1, so I know that after ther requisite number of targets i have to reload before I can engage any more targets. It works for me better than counting shots.

  8. My best advice is to enjoy yourself. This being your first time shooting an entire match, you can only get better. You know what your skill level is and you should make your stage planning accordingly. Try to make a plan and stick with it, as being indecisive can really mess you up in the middle of shooting a stage. Try to improve from stage to stage in the match, but be realistic. The sport is fun and should feel that way.

  9. On October 27th I competed at the Crescent City Open in New Orleans in the Veteran Men's Combined Epee and Division II Men's Epee events. This event was the first opportunity for me to qualify for the 2013 US Nationals that will be held in Memphis TN this coming July.

Both events were on the same day, which made it a long day for me and tested my physical reserves.

In the Veteran event I finished 5th out of 9 in the seeding pools going into the direct elimination brackets. I made it to the semi-final bracket where I was defeated. I finished with bronze, losing to the eventual winner of the event. This competition qualified me for the Veterans (40+) event in the coming US Nationals. This event started at just after 8am and finished at about 12:15pm.

The Division II event started at about 2:15pm, which of course gave me two hours for my muscles to get cold (yea! [NOT]). I came out of the seeding pools for the direct elimination brackets 5th out of 7. I made it to the bracket of 16 where I lost by ONE POINT, keeping me from making the bracket of 8. :sight: I would have had to made it to the top 3 to qualify through this event to the Division II Mens Epee event at the US Nationals.

I have one more chance to qualify this season to the US Nationals in epee, and have set my sights on that next qualifying event. In addition I am lighting a fire under my fellow clubmates to get them excited about qualifying for team events at the US Nationals.

As it stands I have qualifyied for one of two events that I have set my sights on (excluding team events), and have some work to do to be ready for the next qualifying event. My ultimate goal is to have a veteran's mens teams in epee and foil, open mens teams in epee and foil, division II mens epee, and possibly compete in division II and/or III foil.

Achieving all that will be a tall order I know, but I have nothing to lose trying. :)

  10. Reading the comments above I regret even more not being able to make the match this year. This was the first MCC that I have missed and hope not to miss another one in the near future. The MCC is normally one of the competitive highlights of my year, right up there with competing in the US Fencing Nationals.

I look forward to purchasing some of the T-Shirts from the match as a small consolation for not being able to make the match. This way I can advertise next years match and possibly get some more shooters from my area to attend.

Congats to all of the participants and well done to all of those who made the match go smoothly and an anual event for a good cause.

  11. I saw the movie last Monday and thought that it was very good. All of the cameos of several well known MMA fighters was nice to see. It was the first time in a while that I have seen Jason "Mayhem" Miller since he had that Bully Beatdown show on MTV2.

I may get the movie when it comes to DVD.

  12. It was a good movie and moved along pretty well. I'll be interested to see if it does well enough for future movies with Tyler Perry as this character.

A little off topic I wonder it Tyler Perry will be in the next Stak Trek movie like he was in the most recent one.

  13. I really hope that things work out for the Revolver Nationals. I don't see me being able to participate in the match due to my schedule and the distance the venue is from me. Right now I have 2 state (one in Charlotte NC the other in Raleigh NC) and 2 national (one in Memphis TN, the other in Hershey-Harrisburg PA) level fencing competitions between March 2013 and September 2013. Due to these competitions my shooting sport participation is taking a backseat unfortunately. I have pondered how I could participate in the Revolver Nationals (if I were to meet the criteria) and getting in necessary practice time for both fencing along with my revolver is rife with conflict.

I have had to miss state & regional IDPA matches along with the USPSA NC Sectionals and Memphis Charity Challenge this year due to schedule related problems. I have been able to manage both fencing and shpooting sports competitions up until this year, but the addition of multiple work related training demands shooting has suffered a bit. I'll be in Franklin TN the weekend of the Memphis Charity Challenge, and not able to make the match due to work related training that starts that Monday. As if fate is playing with me I am able to participate in a fencing tournament being held at Vanderbuilt University the weekend AFTER my training.

Sorry about the divergence from the thread topic. :(

Given that it is currently unknown how many "dedicated" revolver shooters will attend, I don't see any problem with the "dedicated" single-stack shooters participating. I want the numbers to be high enough that the match is held again as it's own match in the future. The details can be "ironed out" later, but the first hurdle of getting a stand alone nationals has come to fruition. :D

My current hope is that I will get the opportunity to participate in the 2014 Revolver Nationals. To that end I want the 2013 Revolver Nationals to be a great success. :D

After some encouragement from Hopalong, I have reconsidered participating in the 2013 Revolver Nationals. It is not a sure thing, but I have been able to iron out some details making it a strong possibility. I have gotten so much enjoyment shooting my Ruger Alaskan in the Memphis Charity Challenge over the last few years that it is my goal to shoot it at the Revolver Nationals. I hope to participate and meet many more revolver shooters from across the country. :)

  14. When I started shooting production in the last year I chose to use a revolver. Yeah it is kind of like ice skating uphill, but I enjoy the challenge. Anyhow I have 5 speedloaders in pouches and 2 in my back pocket (3 in my back pocket if it is an unloaded start).

I normally shoot revolver division, but I had the opportunity to shoot the Memphis Charity Challenge last year and stay the next day for the monthly match at the same range. Many of the same stages were used on both (and the same classifier stage), so I decided to shoot the monthly match in production division with my revolver. Suffice to say that I was an experience.
