  1. Is it possible for galling to occur while shooting an all stainless 1911 or does the problem go away once built?
  2. I saw a short article in a national publication discouraging the use of stailess steel for custom built frames and slides on 1911 type pistols due to the tendency of this steel to gall. Any comments?
  3. Stainless guns can be tightened up. Evolution Gun Works will weld up the rails and recut them for close to the same cost as a set of Accu-Rails. I had a Springfield done and it's tight now. It runs good too.
  4. I wouldn't do it again either. I have a nice 40 slide that lives in my safe. It should have been another gun.
  5. Anybody try the aluma buffs in a single stack 45?
  6. These sound just like the mags I have for my 9mm. I got mine from Springfield, and it says on their website that they're Metalform magazines. They hold 9 rounds. When new, they all had a sharp, burred edge on the ramp area, and would not feed. (I was told to expect this from a friend who had ordered some previously, so I wasn't surprised) About 3 minutes on each with a round file and some 400 grit sandpaper and they were perfect. I have zero issues with them in either of my two 9mm 1911's. Art
  7. "Worked" untill you bumped your safety back on. (1911's) The wide use of 1911's probably cured us of crossed thumbs. Thanks for the info. I always wondered where some of these habits came from. If we didn't try new things we would still be shooting pistols with one hand.
  8. There is an old concealed carry instructor here that won't pass you through his course unless you cross your thumbs. I was just wondering where it came from. Obviously it works for Bill Wilson.
  9. I just got the March/April issue of Front Sight. The article on Bill Wilson shows him using a two hand holding method, not often seen, which is the crossed thumbs method. I know these are old pictures, but does anybody know the history of this technique?
  10. I was pretty excited about the new S&W M&P untill I found out about the magazine disconnect. I have seen more fumbling and frustration with High Powers and their magazine disconnect than almost anything else on the "Unload and show clear". I see S&W advertises availability of buying the gun without for military or police. Now, if the magazine disconnect is considered a safety item for someone snatching your gun, wouldn't military or police need it more than anyone else since they are in harms way lots more than the rest of us?
  11. No, major or minor power factors. Around here IDPA is a 9MM game and IPSC Limited shooters use major power factor 40's mostly.
  12. Which lasts longer, a 9MM/38 Super or a 45 ACP/40 S&W?
  13. Now, if we could get someone to make an extra long magazine catch lock that we could trim, that would be the solution.
  14. Thanks, it's comforting to know I'm not the only one bothered by this little item.
  15. I have a 1911 single stack and have replaced the mag release with an extended length version. These extended length mag releases seem to work as well as a mushroom head release for me and make it much easier to take down the gun for cleaning. However, I find that I can push the release to the point of stopping the magazine from falling free. I dropped a slightly flattened #4 shot into the mag catch body before installing the spring and magazine catch lock. This cured the problem but it seems like there should be a permanent solution. Can anybody help?
  16. I have found that the most consistent velocity loads are with new brass of the same lot and manufacturer. Try some new cases with the same load and see what you get.
  17. I put cases in loading blocks and hold the spray at 45 degrees to the mouths of the cases and spray once over from two directions, that's intentional inside spray. Never a problem in tens of thousands of cases. Consistent too.
  18. Thanks, I'll give those a try.

    9x23

Anyone have a reduced load for the 9X23 and 115 or 125 jacketed bullets?

  21. It would be interesting to see a really top two handed shooter and a one handed shooter in an accuracy shootout. Two handed repeat shots are much faster because you can control recoil so much better and when your score is divided by time that's really important. You don't see much one handed shooting at pistol ranges any more, but when I was a kid that's all you saw. I started shooting two handed when hunting with a 44 magnum. I was alone and nobody could see me "cheating".
  22. Actually I was talking about both Bullseye shooting and Bullseye powder. I didn't mean to belittle the sport. Bullseye shooting is the most challenging type of shooting I have ever tried, but I have always wondered how one handed shooting got started when it seems so much easier to get get satisfactory hits with two hands. Maybe it was a natural progression from sword fighting. Bullseye powder whether it all burns or not is the accuracy standard for reduced lead bullet loads in the 45. But, watch your matches and arcing things around the range floor sweepings!
  23. Having used both the Lewis lead remover system and the copper Chore-boy it's really hard to see how the copper Chore-boy could be more abrasive.
  24. Cut up a copper Chor-Boy pot scrubber and wrap a two by two inch piece on a worn out bore brush. A few passes and the lead is gone. That's the easiest method of all and I've tried them all. Anybody see any difference in lead fouling between chrome moly and stainless barrels?
