  1. My 2 cents: Unfortunately that's no guarantee nothing will go wrong. If it's made by man, it can break. I've had failures with sights that go flying, extractor hooks that break off, magazine catches that don't, springs that go sproing, 'etc. Having spare parts handy just seems to guarantee that particular part will never actually fail. A spare gun makes life easier. And as had been said, it doesn't have to be the exact duplicate of the main gun. Anything that allows finishing the match will do. You know how to effectively use all your guns, don't you?
  2. Modern Blowback airguns will provide a lot of the practice to get the skills back. Use them at home any time you're in the mood. There's probably one available to mimic your firearm, what ever it is. They do work, no fooling.
  3. Just download the IPSC rule book. http://www.ipsc.org/rules/ Oh yes, and don't forget to actually read it before the match.
  4. When I was doing our local club stages, and was having trouble coming up with a new one, I just picked bits and pieces from the classifiers. For some realism, I also tried to incorporate actual shootouts from the news. Like from here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsE_m2z1NrvF2ImeNWh84mw
  5. I have a small collection of dot sights. The preferred one is the tube type. It can still be used as a sighting device even when it stops working. And that can happen any time, usually in the middle of a course of fire. Battery dies, lens cracks, no matter, it still works just by aiming and looking through the tube at the target. Just a thought.
  6. Anyone have experience with the new Ruger carbine that just came out? It uses a wide variety of magazines, including Glock, thanks to interchangeable mag wells. It also is a takedown, similar to the 10-22. Suggested retail price is under $700. http://www.guns.com/2018/01/12/reflecting-on-the-new-9mm-ruger-pc-carbine-video/
  7. Thanks, the price is sure right. Hope they work. Not that it's a big financial risk at $10. Only one way to find out.
  8. About like changing oil in our cars. Mostly we do it far more often than is actually needed.
  9. They aren't specifically for just 1911s, but also for a Marlin Camp carbine in .45acp. All seven, eight and ten round mags that work well in 1911s also work in the carbine. Any recommendations for higher capacity mags that could be expected to work , too? Thanks in advance for any answers.
  10. In the equally excellent western movie Tom Horn, with the late and great Steve McQueen, a reporter from an eastern newspaper dogs Horn asking him how the rapidly disappearing old west really was. Horn finally replies "Raggedy Ass."
  11. Meant in a good way. You know, someone who is thoroughly versed in the rules such that they can quickly open it to the exact rule that applies to every situation. Not too many will ever do that except for the true rules enthusiast. Thus the term nerd.
  12. It could have been worse. At a steel challenge match, in the middle of a stage, it became difficult to use the sights. The rear one had gone flying with the previous shot. Never did find it, but got some very good point shooting practice the rest of the day.
  13. That's been known to destroy more than a few chronographs.
  14. Me neither, come to think. Does that mean those of us who haven't DQed yet are long overdo? Uh, oh, as if I didn't have enough worries.
  15. IHAVEGAS, Unless the club has a genuine rule "nerd" on hand, hardly anyone else has a firm grip on the rule book either. Might just wind up with more arguments about the rules. And that's assuming over riding the RO's decision would be a consideration. RO's have feelings, too. ROs are kind of hard to come by, don't want to chase them away. How many other sports umpires get their decisions reversed? Maybe at a really big, major type match, but very doubtful at a local evening one.
  16. It was probably the taking of the sight picture that prompted the DQ, more than anything else. Does anyone actually get out the rule book in the middle of a match? Once the RO makes a decision, that's pretty much it, unfortunately. I never let a participant go away mad if it could be helped, DQ or not. Better to at least invite them to stay and help in some way rather than that.
  17. Flexible plastic barrel, masking tape and maybe rain = no stick. Every round passing through might blow off all the others. Settle a friendly (?) argument by pawing through the rule book in the middle of a match? ROs generally have to make snap decisions or risk holding up the works. Very unpopular thing to do while squads are piling up behind them. I always considered the rule book as more of a suggestion that could be over ruled by common sense, depending on the circumstances. The matches are supposed to be fun, not cause for altercations. Especially with folks carrying shootin' irons.
  18. Probably a moot point. It's doubtful anyone is paying any attention to most of us.
  19. If there are extra hits on the target, many games require throwing out the highest scoring hit(s) that exceed the round count, Without regard as to what the round(s) might have otherwise hit and passed through. It would be mighty hard to determine if the errant round actually went through a prop first. If it's been placed to be an obstruction, there's probably going to be lots of holes in that prop. Can you just imagine the arguments over whether there's a grease spot? Just a thought.
  20. Hey, watch the personal insults. But seriously, loosening the support hand grip just as the trigger is being pulled can also be to blame.
  21. It's a rare target that requires any more precision than this. And one of the reasons I use a dot scope only for rimfire steel challenge. Very big targets, close distances and a hit anywhere counts. With my astigmatism, for other games a good set of clear iron sights is actually better. A thin, tall front with a wide notch rear that allows plenty of light around the front sight. Prescription glasses made things worse, couldn't see the targets much at all. But to each their own, especially when it comes to eyesight problems.
  22. I've found it to be a good idea to carry a copy of the rules, no matter the subject. Guns, TSA, Airline rules and regulations, boating laws, whatever you might be involved with. The folks with the badges are kind of notorious for not knowing the very laws they enforce. And with a copy of the actual laws and regulations in hand, usually they will listen or call someone for verification. At least that's been my experience.
  23. My doctors have nagged me to have a colonoscopy for years. But recently they have let it drop, saying past a certain age it's no longer recommended. Not sure what that means. Uh, oh, I get it. Ack.
  24. I also use a KWC, the Colt licensed version. They sell for around $100 plus another $30 per extra magazine. It works exactly like the real thing, with about the same recoil as full sized .22 rimfire pistol. I get 60 shots per CO2 cartridge.
