Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Great inputs! Though at first, I thought the thread was about whether one starts a match w/ a short course, or w/ a long course (assuming there was no squadding).
  2. can you show how the sear was broken, perhaps a picture? just curious what happened.
  3. I've seen some extended base pads for the XD40 and XDm40. One is from Canyon Creek, but I believe it won't fit the box. I'm not sure which of the others would fit in the IPSC box for Standard Division (ex. Arredondo, Novak, Pistol-gear?). Has anyone used the XDm for standard division with base pads, and how many rounds did the mag end up with? I'm still contemplating on either an XD (stock mag has 12 rounds) or XDm 40 (stock mag has 16 rounds) and just add base pads for added rounds, and want to know my options before deciding w/c of the two units to get, since the XDm's cost around $400 more over here 'Maybe', if there would be base pads that would bring the XD40 mags to at least 16 rounds while still fitting the IPSC box, I might just consider this cheaper unit and spend the $400 on the other needed accessories & stuff.
  4. For those who label your mags, what do you use? I'd like to number them since they're not from the same batch and I'd like to keep track which springs are older/newer, and not mix them up during matches. I've tried applying a little paint, as well as small stickers on the basepads but they come out easily, especially when some oil gets in the way.
  5. I searched but couldn't find a post of someone having this same dilemma as I have. I've found many on monovision, but none compounded with having cross-dominance and using the 'Tape' trick. As a background, I am right-handed and left eye dominant and found the 'Translucent Tape' trick (on my dominant left eye) to be very effective. Basically, my non-dominant, right eye was used for aiming, and for distance as well, assisted by my partially-covered dominant, left eye. I've been using the tape for 2 years now, and recently, I've had the need to wear reading glasses (just around +0.75 to +1) for very close objects. I searched for solutions regarding this setup and found most recommendations pointing to having clear front sights rather than distance. So I decided to have a lens insert for my right (aiming) eye only, but only at +0.5 (so as to minimize limiting the range of clear vision (since higher grades result to this). What I realized later was that with the prescription lens on my right eye, I'm now compromising my vision for distance with this eye, and would have to rely mostly on my left, dominant eye for distance. But since I have the tape over my left eye, this gets to be difficult, particularly when having to run to another location. Although the tape is only around 1/2 inch wide and high (just enough to cover the area between my left eye and the front sight), it still blocks some part of my vision. I believe the dimensions of my tape is already the minimum I could manage to not have the sights seen by my left eye. Is this how I should set it up? How do you manage running to new positions? Is it just a matter of getting used to? I was excited with the new realization of the clearer front sights but got dismayed when I tried it out in the range when having to move/run to other positions. I hope to find a setup that would eventually work. Thanks a lot.
  6. Obviously, all (or most) of us try to prepare as much as possible to avoid any malfunctions in a stage, but we also know that Murphy sometimes kicks in at the most undesirable moments shooting a stage. I'd like to know how you incorporate anticipating (or should I say preparing for) malfunctions in your game plan when reviewing/visualizing a stage? Perhaps worded differently, how do you incorporate 'what ifs' during review w/o screwing up the plan. I remember BE posting something to this effect but I could not remember what thread.
  7. "Solving" problem 1 will just require lots of dry drawing practice - learn to get that weak hand into position as quickly as possible. And problem 2 may not be a problem, because as you said, the sights are tracking consistently. be Thanks Brian. At first I was thinking it was incorrect to have my support index finger's 2nd knuckle under the left of the trigger guard, as it felt ackward, like my hands were way too far back at the gun. But come to think of it, I guess what matters is the sight recovery, and these should just be more of challenges that I just need to work on to get used to. One quick question when setting your support hand. Do you start off first by putting your finger under the trigger guard then wrapping your hand back to the backstrap, OR do you start at the backstrap and wrap your fingers over your strong hand? Thanks again!
  8. just a clarification... I surmise most here advice having the main contact of the support palm at the side of the grip panel, am I right? Whereas in page 41 of BE's book (and also from Mike Seeklander's tips), I noticed having enough of the meaty part of the support hand at the backstrap. I tried this and it worked well in 2 areas: 1. it helped me align the sights when I raise the gun, in contrast to having them pointing slightly left if I had the meaty part of my palm at the support side of the grip. 2. sight recovery was great, and would come back aligned. Doesn't anyone use this grip? My 2 problems now though are how to do this fast enough (i.e. getting to set the meaty part of my palm to reach the backstrap) after the draw, even after raising my strong thumb... and after doing so, the 2nd knuckle of my support index finger rests under the left of the trigger guard (no longer at the right when just contacting the side grip panel). Though this may be another topic.
  9. Sorry, but I'm not sure I follow this... are there links explaining details of this, better yet with pictures?
  10. I asked this in another post, but will ask here just the same... Which 'part of the support hand palms' contacts the grip panel.... is it only the meaty part of the thumb muscle that contacts the upper grip panel (below the safety), OR is it also important to have the meaty part of the pinky finger contacting the lower part of the grip panel?
  11. Just to clarify which 'part of the palms' contacts the grip panel.... is it only the meaty part of the thumb muscle that contacts the upper grip panel (below the safety), OR is it also important to have the meaty part of the pinky finger contacting the lower part of the grip panel?
  12. Actually, I find it much easier aligning my arms under my right eye (being right-handed), than having to force my arms to align the gun under my left, dominant eye. I tried it many times, and it's ackward. Besides, I'm used to indexing the gun under my right eye already and the translucent tape works well. I'm wondering now if having 2 different refractions won't cause any dizzyness... and that it won't worsen the condition of the eyes. And instead of using +1, should I just put something lower, perhaps +0.50 to +0.75 only?
  13. I posted this somewhere but didn't get any feedback, perhaps put in the wrong thread. I'm left-dominant, right hand shooter and far-sighted, +1 only for reading close and small prints. I use translucent tape on my left lens. This solves the dominancy issue but not the issue of seeing the sights clearly, being far-sighted. When I tried wearing my +1 glasses, boy were the sights crystal! I'm now also thinking of applying a prescription +1 lens on my right lens for a clearer front sight, but leave my left lens as is w/o any prescription, for distance. Won't I have problems (i.e. get dizzy) having 2 different refractions (i.e. when switching from front sights to distant objects when locating targets, or running to another position)? Or does this take some getting used to... if so, perhaps how long? Likewise, won't this worsen the condition of the eyes? Or instead of +1, should I just put something lower, perhaps +0.50 to +0.75 only? Thanks.
  14. can't get the Wheel game to start, only the Drag Game
  15. I'm left-dominant, right hand shooter and far-sighted, +1 only for reading really close and small fonts. I use tape on my left eye lens. I'm thinking of applying a prescription +1 lens on my right lens only for a clearer front sight, and leave my left as is w/o any prescription for distance. For those of you who have this setup, don't you feel dizzy switching from front sights to distant objects (i.e. to view/locate targets, or run)? Or does this take some getting used to... if so, perhaps how long? Won't this worsen the condition of the eyes?
