Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. "What I do not understand is the difference between a 40cal bullet with a base diameter of .400" and the ones marked .401". I'm guessing the .401 are for barrels that are loose?" mcoliver, I think you're right. I found the following on the H&N web-page (FAQ): (http://www.natermann.de/sport/uk/frameset.html) "Question: Why are different bullet diameters offered? Answer: The barrels of different weapon manufacturers and their dimensions are often very different. Take for instance the well-known 9mm-Para-barrels (European) from SIG (Sauer) Beretta, CZ (dia. .357), is wider than the barrels of American manufacturers. In the S&W .40 calibre the difference is even more pronounced. Barrels of the manufacturers Glock, Beretta, CZ, Tanfoglio continue to need (HS -) bullets with a diameter of .402, most other barrels use bullets with a diameter of .401. When in doubt one should measure the barrel and select a projectile, which is 0.02 to 0.03 mm larger than the measured calibre."
  2. I had the same problem with my n320 and n340 loads: spreads were in the 40-70 fps range (or even 100 fps with n340). Shortening the OAL helped me to decrease SD without ruining accuracy. When I reduced the OAL to 1.142 in my 9mm loads (4.0gr n320) the spreads were down to approx. 20 fps. With 4.7gr n340 I had to reduce OAL to 1.135 to get consistent spreads. Of course reducing OAL will increase pressure. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL!!!!
  3. Texasag93, I use this load with 220gr precision bullets: WSP primer, various brass, 4.4gr VV n340, OAL. 1.142, PF 173-175, gun: PO 16-40 The load is clean and consistent. The gun might cycle slow for most shooters BUT the recoil is soft and it's really easy to "follow" the front sight. With OAL 1.190 you will need approx. 4.5 - 4.6gr VV n340. When developing your own load try heavier springs (#14 works best for me )
  4. Sky67, I had the same problem with my 340 loads (both 9 Luger and .40). I think too long OAL is responsible for your extreme velocity spread. The VV340 is a SLOW powder and it needs a certain level of pressure to burn completely and consistently. With longer OAL starting pressure will be too low to fully ignite the powder. Try to decrease OAL (see the VV manual for min. OAL!!! ) and your 340 loads will be consistent. If you don't want to change OAL use SR or Magnum primers.
  5. I have no experience with TG under a 220gr but the following load works fine in my gun (PO16): 4.2-4.3gr VV n340; WSP primer; Haendler & Natermann plated 220gr HS bullet; OAL: 1.135" = PF 173-175 with OAL 1.17 I use 4.4gr of n340. Recoil is soft and the load is very clean.
  6. Matt, IMHO 3N38 is as good as SP2. Moreover, SP2 always mess up my D650 because of its small grain size (I hate cleaning). Now I only use 3N38. One more idea: my "all-time" favourite powder used to be WAP. As far as I know Ramshot still produce it under a different name (it might be all wrong). If it's true You might give it a try. Klev
  7. Matt, I hope the following loads will give you a good starting point. 1. SPS open gun ( 4 hibrid ports, 5 ported comp, 8# spring) Remington brass, WSPM primer, 124 gr PMC FMJ, OAL: 1.220 - 3N37: 8.2-8.4gr, PF: 169-173 - Vectan SP2: 9,2gr, PF: 168-170 2. SVI open (4 hibrid ports, Venturi effect SVI comp) - 3N37: 7.8gr, PF 165-167 - SP2: 9.0gr, PF 162-166 - 3N38: 9.2gr, PF 163-165 I have experienced less muzzle flip with 3N38 and SP2 but SP2 meters badly from my D650. I never had any problems with 3N37 but it produced some "double ignitions" in my friend's gun. I use EGW 9x19 resizing dies and abandon brass after 3rd-4th reload. 115gr bullets produced less flip for me but as you can't make major under 120gr here in Europe I don't use them any more. DVC! I've been using these loads for approx. 3 years. Never had any problems. 175PF: Gun: SPS open (4 hibrid ports, 6 ported comp) brass: Remington; V-V 3N37 (8.3gr); primer: WSPM or WSR; OAL: 1.220; Speer 124gr FMJ; av.speed: 1431 fps 165PF: V-V 3N37 (7.9 - 8.0gr); av. speed: 1305 - 1320 fps These loads were safe in my gun but I wouldn't use them with shorter OAL than 1.220!
