USCSBarney, what recoil spring weight ended up working best for you?

14# was lowest with the 34 length slide I found would work reliably.

Call Jeff Abernathy of Tommy Guns USA. He is in the Charlotte, NC area and will build you one. He has built a couple of opens for me. He has also done a trigger job on almost every 1911 I own, his trigger jobs are amazing. I'm sure his wait time is also one of the shortest around.

Can’t say enough about Abernathy as well. Builds are quality and won’t steer you wrong. Not sure on his lead times currently but the three he has built me are all grand.

  3. Adams I shot a competition model in Carry Optics with no issues. There is the lip the magwell hooks into and the section at the bottom, below the texturing, where it fits but I never had an issue with it. The lip actually almost seemed to give an index point for your initial grip.

I just picked up an OZ9 Elite Standard and am looking forward to competing with it in carry optics despite all the hiccups listed in this thread.

What I haven't seen is anyone posting about getting and using the tungsten grip module.  I spoke to someone at ZEV and he said that because they're so busy, he's not sure when they'll be released again.  Anyone get their hands on one and using it?

I'm also considering putting in a Glock Store pure tungsten guide rod to increase weight.  Anyone have one of those installed?

Anyone using the compact module with a standard size grip module and ZEV XL G34 size slide?  I'm considering this as a backup gun when and if the competition slides are released again after redesign due to KC leaving.

I managed to get one of the tungsten grips and they very much balance out the gun if you put a GS pure tungsten guide rod in it. Actually had to up the recoil spring weight by a pound or two when I added the two.

I also wouldn’t hold my breath on the 34 length slide anytime soon either. They told me slightly over a year ago that they were redesigning it when they canceled my 30 day old order for one. Have one of the last nonKC 34’s they made I think.

I assume they are selling everything they can make, and branching out in collaborations with companies like Sig, that their R&D/Competition department isn’t the priority. Stinks for us but business wise I get it.

  5. Bringing this thread back to life. Anyone tried an OZ9 in a Weber, Double Alpha or other known brand holster? DAA told me they had not tried it and obviously couldn’t guarantee.

  6. What would you all consider the best PF for minor open guns? I know they could encompass quite a bit of variables but am thinking more of 3 Gun frame mounted optic guns.

I have ave an SPS shorty and the comp is two port but it doesn’t seem very effective unless I feed it +P type loads. 150-155 PF does the best in the two port comp. it cycles with full 130PF loads but seems to not be as flat due to the comp not seeming to work all that well at 130.

    Happy New Year!

  7. MBX is the best, especially with the 155 option for reload. I must admit I have had excellent luck with Gen 2 STI mags though. Replace the guts with Grams, basepad with your pick and off to the races. Cheaper to restart with if money demands.

  8. Wondering what anyone may be using in their PCC JP Silent capture spring system with +P ammo. Purchased the upgrade weights but still getting a decent amount of bolt bounce. Tried emailing JP but just got back “but our new unit”. Just looking for spring weight suggestions and where to get. All I can find is the “set” they offer.

Before the question is asked why +P.... I can get it for free.

*cough* *cough* some mbx Glock mag greatness

How many does the new mega Glock mag hold? WOW!

to the original point..... Nordic has now removed the ability to buy ANY magwell. Looks like I may be selling it as I am tired of waiting for the unicorn to show itself.

  10. Didn’t use this one but a gunsmith made one that was virtually identical. The height over bore is rather difficult to get used to. Not unlike a full open pistol but without the stability of the mount. I ended up having it milled.

To me, try a carry optics gun and an open gun and see which has a dot that better fits your eye. Slide mounted optics are easier to find for 3 gun purposes.

Maybe Nordic is realizing the futility of a 2011 mag based PCC

    Recieved this today from them..

We’re currently waiting on a run of the Delrin filler for the magwell insert, but there should be some of these available within the next few weeks.

My G45 is getting milled right now with an RMR 07. Should have it any day. May try it out in a match and report back.

Very much looking forwards to your thoughts on it my friend.

  13. As promised!!! Finally getting into Open with a 40! Muchos gracias mi amigo Robbie Wheaton for making my dreams come true!

Was looking to work on a backup but the forums minders didn’t like those efforts. Will keep up efforts with this little beauty. Hopefully a range report will happen if work and kids permit the time.

    Yeee hawwww!!

  14. Magpuls seem to run good thou I had one fail. It failed also in a pistol so probably the mag. Glock mags run best, especially with the MBX extensions that I use. Sanding the upper section slightly with fine grit sand paper seems to help with the “drop free” problem that occurs. ETS I haven’t tried as they were so hit and miss years ago have never invested in them but have seen (not experienced) better results as of recent.

  15. Not sure what the G45 slide weighs but killing for the optic would loose some weight. Just sure if enough. Optimum weight on an open gun slide is around 10oz. The use of a tungsten rod would bring the reciprocating weight (felt anyway) even lower as more weight is stationary in the hand. 130ish powerfactor should be easy as velocity loss from a 34 length barrel to a 19 length is minimal. I would wager if it makes 130 in a 34 it would still easily make minor (above 125) in a 45.

When I pick up my open gun from Wheaton Arms I am going to run it by him to see if he agrees.

  16. Amazed I couldn’t find this idea already broached. I know it might take a while for the production qualification part f CO BUT...

How does this idea sound? Glock 45 with a lightened slide and milled for your sight of choice?

Sight length means nothing in CO. Slide is already down to G19 weight so lightning would be minimal. Full length frame for grip and stippled/undercut to your desire. If anyone makes a tungsten guide rod it would make a nice nimble package for minor rounds.

Am I off my rocker on this or did my Black Rifle Coffee do too much damage again?

A couple guys that shoot OPEN around here have built a 2011 'carry optics' type pistol. Use a sight tracker with ports in the barrel and slide mounted optics. Much easier to carry in a normal retention holster and they are 9mm, since 3 gun has no power factor.

I have built one very similar. No ports in the island but with minor I doubt it makes a difference. Only played with it so far but hope to shoot in a match next weekendZ

Practical 3-Gun.pdf Long time lurker of course - interested in divisions quite a bit myself. To the point that I decided to start writing various Outlaw match rules and divisions of my own. Writing them out really helps to find the flaws and I am sure there are still many but I've attached (not sure what that does so this is a test run) a pdf of the current 3-Gun version. It's meant to be an Outlaw match so some of it doesn't apply to the theme of this thread but the divisions I think do. I've been shooting a P09 with a red dot in open at my local club for a couple seasons now and it works out just fine for me at the club level but I don't think it's really viable for someone who is competitive at major matches.

Tony has a point. Much of the previous criticism of IDPA was the hours long gun checks it took to shoot bigger matches. I can also say from shooting IDPA and NRA TPC that it is difficult at best to appease rule sets that are enforced with old scales or an inexperienced human enforcers.

Some of the ideas you have are on interesting but the implementation would be problematic. Not that many of the ones now aren’t but I guess that is the innate problem of rule sets.

I started this thread as I am seeing the advancement in what is “duty issue” that has occurred in recent years and how many of even novice or new shooting sports entrants have headed that advancement. That and my aging eyes I must admit.

Keep up the thinking it only drives the sport and don’t be deterred by nay sayers whose first inclination is to act snarky.

from the shot show Nortic said they have 10 prototypes of 2011 maxwells in the works . looking at nordics website today they are reorganizing their company

Yea the reorg is what concerns me. Not for only the company and its employees but how hard they are going with the issue. The one Pat had seemed to work just fine and one would think that if they let a guy with that much clout demo it for the world...

Corp reorg’s are a pain I am sure so hope they get back on track. Wouldn’t be so worried if saw product available.

  20. ZZT is a wealth of knowledge on the issue. Helped me come up with ideas and supplied knowledge on my 40 Open build. Should have it in hand first week of June.
