Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I have an XD-9 service 4" I shoot in production. I got it in February and have about 3500 rounds through it and haven't had a single problem with the gun. It fits my hand and shoots great. Hopefuly it won't develop reliability issues the longer I shoot it. But, so far so good. Good luck William
  2. +1 ACADEMY Monarch 9mm $5.86 a box of 50.
  3. Shot my 4th local match last night. I'm new at this game and was reading Brian's book and realized he was right about how I was shooting steel. I had been shooting, front sight would lift, then I wait for the DING and watch the target start to fall, then shift eyes to the next target. So, last night I said I'm calling my shots and moving on. Towards the end of the first stage I shoot (2) paper through a window port and (3)steel. Paper on left, (3)steel in center and other paper on right of steel. I engage left to right through port I remember shooting the next steel each time before hearing the DING of the hit and had even dropped my mag to reload for the next port before hearing the last DING. I finish the stage and am picking up my magazines and hear them calling out shots and hear (1 MIKE) I thought BULLSHIT.. I step around the wall to see what they are talking about and there stands the middle Popper tall and proud. I'm thinking I Know I hit that damn thing about that time some one picked up the Popper in front of that one . Lesson learned don't just look at the stage from the ports and boxes walk my lazy ass back to the targets and look around. And on a good note I did call my shots on the Poppers I saw Each match has been great fun and I learn something new at each one, got to love it!! William
  4. Great example Houngan and great alternate plans from the others. This has realy helped me to think about the best way to manage the reload situation. I think starting with 5 magazines will help also It allows more room to do a reload at a movement to speed up the stage when only having 4 magazines might not allow as much freedom for fear of coming up short at the end of a stage if you miss some steel. Do most of you start with (4), one in the gun and (3) on the belt, or (5) one in the gun and 4 on the belt? Thanks William
  5. Thanks for all the tips great info. I stopped by the store and got another magazine so I can carry 5 one in the gun and 4 on the belt. that way I can afford to reload as necessary without worrying about round management as much. I have to laugh I have only been shooting USPSA for 3 months I shot competition Pistol and Rifle in the Marines but that was a while ago I got out in 1991. I am a accuracy hound you know "ONE SHOT ONE KILL" So for the life of me I couldn't understand why in the hell I needed more than 2 magazines to complete a stage My gun = 16 rounds Then I show up first match and you can only put 10 rounds per mag Opps! So I stroll through the stages shooting all A's Thinking I GOT IT GOING ON!! Look at the score at the end of the match and see it ain't all about A's you have to actually shoot fast also. Hmm so I ordered 2 more mags and did the next two matches with 4. Now I will be using 5. Umm I think I see why you need all those mags now LOL!!! Now if I can just get Faster :-) Good video Pharaoh I see what you mean!! Just wondering where your blue shorts were. :-)
  6. I am looking for some help as to how some of you manage you reloads for a stage. I shoot a XD-9 in production class so this limits to 10 rounds per magazine. I was told at my last match that I could load 11 in the first magazine so you start with 10 + 1 ( So I started doing that). Do you look at the stage and count every 5th target and know to drop a mag at that location or do you try and keep track as you go. I have been trying to mag change before the slide locks on an empty Magazine because a reload with locked open or empty chamber defiantly takes longer than changing before you run dry. The last club match I shot this past weekend was laid out with about 4 targets per area (i.e... shots through a door or window port) within the stage so it was easy to say "I will just drop a mag while moving to next opening or shooting location" other stages aren't so easy to manage. Just looking for some input and ideas from some of you more experienced shooters on the best way to manage this. Thanks William
  7. I have a plain mil spec Rock Island 1911 SS .45 and was glad to see there is a division for it. I read the rules off the USPSA web site to see what could and couldn't be done to the gun and still be legal. A couple of club members said no mag well is allowed, As I read it you can have them. So I just ordered a Wilson Combat mag well, a nice Hogue grip, filed the rear sight notch a bit wider and painted the front sight orange, I'M READY TO GO!!! I plan to start shooting SS at our next match this Sunday. I will be the only shooter in this class maby I'll inspire a few others LOL!!! I would also like to see this division non-provisional so we can classify. I had been shooting an XD-9 in production but really like shooting my.45.
  8. Steve I hear ya!! Just shooting Production class With my XD-9 and some IDPS (indoor defensive pistol shooting) on Thursday nights with my single stack 1911 has got me addicted all over again. I was fortunate enough to shoot competition rifle and pistol (1st FSSG team Okinawa) my first year in the Marine Corps. Free 5.56 and .45 shoot til you hurt Went to the range a while back with a few friends that wanted to take the CHL class. I helped them learn to shoot groups free style and found out about the USPSA stuff from someone at the range. I made the mistake of going to a match and now you can see where it is all headed right I will probably take your advice and go to a 3 gun match and just shoot what I have and ask a few questions. Thanks William
  9. That may be the way to go I have a Mil spec single stack Rock Island .45. I'm not sure I like the AK-47 as much as I do the AR's since I was in the Marine Corps. I have plans to buy a Bush Master But, a cheap SKS might get the job done and be fun. I assume the SKS in 7.62 X 39 is legal in that category???
  10. Thoes are realy great looking shot guns. pretty much look like a SKS. Do most shoot autos of one sort or another or do alot of people compete with pumps such as the Remington 870 or Mossberg 500?
  11. Yes it seems mag capacity or mag extension is another consideration also. stands to reason that the more it will hold the less you have to reload. I'm not sure if there are any trick reloaders for shot guns but stuffing them in the tube one at a time is not exactly a speed action :-)
  12. One of the clubs near me is starting to host 3 gun matches so I want to gear up. I currently shoot an XD-9 in production. The only shot gun I have is an old Mossberg 600-AT pump. 28" with the selecta choke on the barrel. it is about 27 years old but I'm not sure it is the right gun to use for these matches. After looking through this section a bit it seems that most are shooting Auto loaders just looking for some input as to which gun to get. I first thought I would just get a Mossberg tactical 500 pump. But also seems most vary the choke they use and the tactical mostly come with a short barrel 20" and a fixed choke at Cylinder. Hoping some of you can lead me in the correct general direction. Thanks William
  13. I have heard some good things about the new M&P even seen a few at the indoor IDPS (Indoor Defensive Pistol shoot) I do on Thursdays they seem like a nice gun. As you said once they get a few extras out on the market for them that could also be a good choice. I have to agree with your earlier post that the Glocks seem like a good choice. I may look into a 35. Another advantage the Glock seems to have is avaliability of accesories and parts that would make it easier to build it up to a decent limited gun. If Springfield puts the 40 on a full size frame to increase the capacity of it I would surly have to give that a look to.
  14. Thanks Nemo I'll Look into the Glock.
  15. Ok Thanks that is what I wanted to know. Sounds like it just doesn't have the round capacity. How many rounds should a typical Limited gun hold? The .40 is considered a major caliber isn't it? Are the Glocks I have seen in limited class capable of holding more rounds in the 40 caliber or are they also a poor choice for a Limited gun?
