Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Any new developments on this? I am thinking hard about converting over to bluetooth and a app for the phone would be much better than hauling my laptop around.
  2. I saw a post somewhere and now I cant find it on how to make a captured buffer spring. If I remember right they used a 1911 spring and had a pretty good discussion on its construction and good changes. Do any of you recall seeing that and know where it was?
  3. Is there anywhere that will sell "test" lots of bullets so i can try some various bullets before i have to buy 1k or more to find out? I have a M&P 9 and have read through the threads talking about what it likes and doesn't like. Other than 125 gr and 147 its kind of hit and miss depending on YOUR barrel. I know i want to stay with jacketed and would really like sealed bases but can do without that. So that narrows things down a little but there are still too many options for me to pick from. Ive been known to have bad luck so i try not to push it when i don't have to. So what do you think? Major
  4. I think there was talk of the sear plungers going to the larger MA compliant ones for reliability reasons. I know APEX was doing the mod but i thought S&W was going to only sell them like that now too. It makes sense to me and would cut their costs so i see it as a win win if they do it and maybe pass some savings to us. As for serial numbers i can't help you with that. I don't know exactly what else your asking but id get it without the thumb safety and internal lock as well. Hope that helps, Major
  5. If you can hold off until after christmas i can give you a little review on it. I bought the interface and gave it to my wife to give me for christmas.
  6. Thanks for the info. I think G-ManBarts solution may be the best route since i want to end up with the CSD. I have read the Dillon dies are good but that also means ordering from a couple different places so that will bump up the shipping. Ill keep my eye on the Titanium carbide dies and may pick them up in pieces if i have any sticking or just not happy with the LEE's. One thing i was just thinking about is how do you measure the length of loaded rounds? The FMJ should be pretty consistant but what about hollow points? For my rifle i use a attachment for the calipers to measure at the ogive. I feel like this is a really dumb question but at the same time i can see it being a issue. Are there any other special tools you have found useful for loading for pistols? I know im going to over think the details after loading for rifles but this is one area where that is some what of a plus.
  7. I am trying to come up with some plans for some 9mm reloading dies. The catch is my current press is a RCBS Rockchucker (single stage). My rifle dies are all redding but looking through their catolog they say the ones with the competition seater are made for a progressive. I could just add a expander die seperatly but is Redding as good of a pistol die as it is a rifle die? Would i be better off just buying a LEE 4 die set and getting the competition seater later from Redding? I want to upgrade to a Dillon 650 for pistol ammo but thats not in the near future so what do you think? Also feel free to add in any suggestions for parts to get a good 9mm setup together. I have some parts i know i need for rifle rounds but am new to loading pistol rounds.
  8. Thanks for the replies so far. As it stands i have the scope on a Larue cantilever riser (LT-101)and that isn't far enough forward. All i have on hand are medium rings its a little too high and the ring spacing set like that doesn't give the scope body the support i want it to have. I tried going to the Firebird site but the products page is down. Is there anywhere else i can get some info on the extension? The wrench i have is the Guntec one that has USMC printed on it. I tried both sides with no luck but the three pin side (FF tube side) was really a better fit. Both are too loose though.
  9. I have a V-Tac handguard that i want to install but i have some issues i want some feedback on. - First off my barrel nut wrench doesnt fit the V-Tac nut well and slips so what wrenches have you found that worked good? - I want to mount an optic on it and (here is the catch) I want to have the front ring on the handguard and the rear ring on the upper reciever. Whats the best way to get this as flat as possible? I have a set of gage blocks but i think 3" is my largest one and i only have one. I have the small rail thats normally used to mount a front sight that i will mount the front ring to. I do have a Larue riser and i could clamp one end on the upper and the other on the rail on the handguard but i dont know how much side to side play that would allow to throw off the alignment - I dont want to use red locktite on it so i thought blue may be a good alternative but have yall found its really needed? I assume it would help me with setting the rotation if it was cured before i tightened the barrel nut. I tried installing my last one using a gage pin in the gas tube home but it wasnt close enough since the hole in the handguard retainer was larger. By eye just didnt get it close enough. Thanks for any info. Major
  10. I definatly understand the justifiable issue. My man reasoning behind it is to get something close to the size of my officers 1911 and a glock 19. My use will be for carry and id like to do some mild competitions with it if i can find a venue around here. At he club i used to be at it wasnt an issue but now that ive moved it is. The compact just doesnt feel good to me and knowing that i wont want to shoot it like i need to. The full size is ok but it has extra grip area my reletivly small hand just dont need. My officers 1911 magwell is right at the bottom of my hand so length wise its perfect. I also like the l;ittle bit longer barrel on the full size. That gives me a little more help on sight alignment which doesnt hurt at my current skill level. If i could just get one or two magazines i would attempt the mod myself but i dont have a welder so its a no go unless i take it and have them welded. I could try to braze it on but im not wild about that on a carry magazine. I planned to only own one or two of the short magazines and have all my spares as full size. After the first magazine there is no need to limit the length becuase at that point concealability isnt an issue. Modding the frame i think i could handle though. I feel like an idiot not thinking about him being on the road and competing. Dan if you read this sorry for the two contacts. Major
  11. When i was in machine tool school we used spray bottles full of a water based coolant. As the saw cut we sprayed as needed. I think a coolant system unless your were cutting allot of steel would be a waste and just be a mess to take care of. The spray bottles worked pretty good in my experience.
  12. I have read about Burwell gunsmithings chopper M&P 9 and tried to contact im via e-mail and PM but havent been able to get a reply. Do any of you know much or have used anyones cut down grip pistol. I REALLY like the fac that its smaller than the full size but larger than the compact. The thing is i just cant find much info on it. Ive found a few threads around about it but its mostly just a couple finished pictures and comments on how they either like it or its not needed. Im cuious what all the mod entails. I know the magazines are cut and welded but are they avaliable at all? If i dont hear anything back i may try it on my own. If i were to take on the mod myself do any of you know what all needs to be done to complete it? I dont own a M&P 9mm yet since i ddnt like the size but now that this option is out there it has me interested. Ive shot a full size .40 and it did great. I carry a officers model .45 with a 4.25" barrel and it fits my hand about perfect length wise. Anyway if any of youhave any pictures of you pistol done like this or even just a small piece of info i'd really like to hear (see) it. Thanks, Major

    M&P 9

Ive read a few topics now about the pros where they have has ejection issues. Is this a problem with the pro's or do all of the M&P's act up. I was thinking hard about buying one of the standard size models instead of the pro or compact but now that i see this im having some doubts. I plan to use it as a carry gun as well so thats why i didnt want to go the pro route. The compact while better for carry just seemed a little short in grip length. How are these pistols doing in matches as far as accuracy potential and reliability? Hopefully what ive read is a small number of the population. Ive also read the triggers leave something to be desired. Ive shot a full size .40 and didnt see too much of an issue. Then again i only shout about 15 rnds. Is there anything to give it a better reset (thats the issue ive heard) while keeping the trigger around 4lbs. Im starting to drift the the gunsmithing section so ill leave it at that. Thanks for any help, Major
