  1. I still have one of the original 610 5" from the early '90s. I got it about the same time the 40S&W was becoming the Limited gun caliber of choice. I played with that 610 a lot trying to find a load that would beat my 625s. I tried 135gr Noslers with lots of AA#5 all the way to 220gr LTCs . Among the problems at the time was the case walls of 40 brass were thin and it wasn't too hard to blow a case. But finally the 625 won out because the 5" gun is noticeably lighter and speed reloads much easier with 45ACP. Has any one asked S&W what their problem is making 5" guns. They stopped making 5" 625s, then stopped making 5" 610s and recently stopped making 5" 627s. WTF?? They seem to think IDPA guys want 4" bbls. Anybody here seen an IDPA revolver shooter lately? I shoot revolver at local IDPA matches because no one else does.
  2. I have all of the above 8-shot revos. and the V-comp is probably most useful for hunters who want to run 357 Magnum heavy loads. USPSA only allows 8-shooters to be minor and ICORE 8-shooters are all scored the same, major or minor. I ran the V-comp with major loads at a local outlaw club and the results were disappointing i.e. slow transitions and a tendency to hit low on the paper. I now run 627-5 8-shot minor and beat all the major-load 625s. I imagine there are people who run the heavy gun but I don't see many.
  3. What an interesting thread! I haven't seen any problems on my 929 because I haven't shot it enough. However, I bought a Les Baer Premier II 45 ACP a few years ago which has a carbon steel frame and slide that have been hard chromed. It came from an auction site so I don't know the gun history. I noticed the primers in fired brass had a donut ring pressed into the primer when it came out of this Baer gun. The breech face is completely etched with a ring around the FP hole. I never realized the ring is probably from gas leak around the primer until this thread. Baer drilled the FP hole out to 45 ACP firing pin for me but the ring is still there. Baer did a little rant about Winchester white box ammo probably causing the erosion but never mentioned gas coming out around the primer. Now I have a good idea how the damage occurred. Gun runs fine but the resale price will suck. Bob
  4. This problem with PC guns goes back over more than 10 yrs. I bought a 625-7 in 2002 which is a JM designed 45 ACP with a short cylinder and a 5 1/4" bbl. The gun came out of the box with cylinder notches that had factory burrs on them. Fast DA shooting would result in the failure to lock-up. Had it cleaned up locally. What shocks me about the Performance Center is the lack of any pride those guys demonstrate. The 929s are obviously being slapped together and shipped and good luck to the buyer! Bob.
  5. Steve, What crimp die did you use to tighten the brass hold?
  6. I'm working on Dave's suggestion to use a roll crimp Lee 45 AR die which it turns out I already have. However, it's a taper crimp so I called Lee. Lee is sending me two .45 Colt roll crimp sleeves which they tell me will go in the 45 AR taper die. The key here is to put both 45 Colt sleeves in together so the crimp can reach the 45 GAP brass. I'll let you know how it works out. Bob.
  7. That's where I'm headed on this Dave.....plated or coated lead bullets with roll crimp. What roll crimp die do you use for this stubby cartridge? FYI: The 325 is going to be for sale. I wouldn't carry it for PD with the bullet jump problem. Bob.
  8. I'm sure bullet pull is just part of the deal when shooting auto cartridges in revos. I had serious pull in my Short Colts with the moly-coated Billy Bullets(very slick) but not much at all with Bayou Bullets(green gator snot is sticky). I never had the total jump out of the case though as I did with 45 GAP this year. Thanks for all the ideas.
  9. I should have mentioned I re-crimped all the ammo using the SDB after the first pulling episode. I turned the crimp die lower and definitely got more crimp. My records show the Starline brass has been reloaded 6 times. I've been loading to a COL of 1.17" and could surely shorten that since there's only 4.0 gr. of powder in the case. I'm thinking I'll also try some Bayou Bullets so the crimp can actually bite into the bullet a bit. What makes this problem funny is the load shoots so soft people laugh and say no way I'm making major. Thanks for your thoughts. Bob.
  10. I have been loading 45 GAP ammo for 5 or 6 years. The load is Starline brass, Montana Gold 230 gr FMJ, 4.0 gr VV N310, Federal primers, Hearthco moonclips. My loading press is a Dillon Square Deal B dedicated to 45 GAP. I'm using this ammo in IDPA ESR. I made a batch of ammo this spring and have been having bullet pull problems for the first time. I first noticed the pull in a 325 PD. A bullet pulled out of the brass and stuck in the cylinder. It was kinda funny when I showed clear and got a handful of powder . I cleared the cylinder and shot the next stage. This time a bullet must have pulled out before I fired the round which resulted in a squib stuck in the barrel. The RO and I stopped in time. So I put the 325 away and used a 4" 625 this weekend. No big problems BUT my one partially fired moonclip had two rounds that were WAY long. Any ideas why this is happening after years of success? Same brass the whole time.
  11. We should all remember we're using very fast powders in the .38 Short Colt loads. Thus I expect all the powder burn has occurred in the first 4-5 inches of barrel. Longer barrels will slow down bullets after the burn is finished. Bob.
  12. Hey Dean....you could always bore the 929 out to 9mm Magnum for deer hunting. :roflol:But you are right...no need to chase the 929 if we've got our 627s all set up to run. Jay Tappe pointed out years ago the the PC in Performance Center gun really stood for "pretty crappy" triggers. I have owned at least 6 PC guns and everyone of them needed significant work to run correctly. It's pretty clear to me the PC department is feeling pressure and cranking the 929s out as fast as they can assemble them. That's what happens when you announce a gun and have none to sell. I thought that was Bill Ruger's trick.
  13. I satisfy my latent casting urges by visiting a friend when he's casting. I watch and help out so I don't have to start my own mess.
  14. I use taper crimp on my 38 Short Colt loads and I'm probably not aggressive enough. I do get bullet pull-out which I can see when I pick up moonclips that weren't all fired. However, I don't have a big problem with it...my ammo is too hot anyway. Bob
  15. I've seen a few old-timers switch to SA on long shots. I've watched them closely: first they lose all tempo they might have had and they have a habit of jerking the SA trigger. It really is a bad idea. One of my brothers was telling me how good he was shooting his revo. I asked if he was shooting DA and if he wasn't he was a dork. Took him 2 months to get over that! LOL Bob IA203
  16. Hey Mike.....how much does one bin weigh? Who's your ammo bearer? Bob.
  17. The front lockup in some S&Ws is highly over-rated. Even S&W didn't use it in many of their revos. Most other revo makers don't use it. The ball détente probably isn't necessary either. Bob IA203
  18. I broke mine last winter....called up Bob Perdue at North Mountain, had a nice chat and sent him the whole gizmo. He fixed me up for a modest stipend. He'll like hearing from you on how long it lasted. Bob IA203
  19. The Berry HBRNs might work because they will obturate to fill the over-sized throats. I used these bullets years ago but only in 625s. One reason the old ladies think lead shoots well in 25-2s is they only shoot single action off a bag at 10 yds. or less...really. They post photos of one hole groups. They collectively went nutz on Clint Smith when he said(in a personal defense column) that one should never shoot a DA revo in single action mode....meaning don't cock your damn revo first and then shoot. It sounded like most of them had never actually shot their revos DA. Bob IA203
  20. Bingo!! This is exactly right. I read once that the inside diameter of the carbide rings in the Lee FCD are variable size not suitable for sizing dies. If you have a tight ring, lead bullets will squeeze down and brass springs back. Sometimes bullets will actually fall right out. Bob IA203
  21. I was on a squad with Jerry M. some years ago. He was shooting a 627 open gun. He was doing his patented drop/throw reload and missed a bit. It didn't hit the ground...it was sort of in the cylinder. When he slammed the cyl. closed a death jam resulted. Even Kay was laughing.
  22. I learned the hard way that WST fizzles out in hot, sunny weather. I went minor in a match one summer with ammo that had consistently chronoed strong major. When I asked people, shotgun handloaders said they kept WST ammo in a cooler at matches to avoid the problem. I use TiteGroup to make minor with 135gr Billy bullets...I can almost hear the loud CRACK they make! I seat at 1.20" because of the long ogive on Billys and boy do they drop in fast.
  23. Huh? What?? Who are you? Who am I? Never fear Mike NM. Your emails, at least two of them, showed up last evening. I responded to your email addy rather than this forum PMs. I included Mike Carmoney's fax number so the FFL in Apache Junction can fax him a copy. I won't be shipping today but soon. Bob IA203
  24. Go ahead and try Clark Custom. I believe I heard recently they're so busy they only take 1911 work. Give them a call and find out for sure. Bob IA203
  25. We have a guy here in Iowa who recently had his GP100 milled for moonclips by Tom Kilhoffer at TK Custom. You only send him the cylinder so you can use Priority Mail. Our guy has a 6 inch and enjoys himself. You can(maybe) buy .38 Special ammo and shoot minor. If you handload, use heavy bullets and push them just hard enough to make major. That GP100 will smooth out with lots of use. Go for it! Bob IA203
