  1. Hey guys, I’ve got an Open gun with the PT EVO grip. I had an SVI magwell on it with no problems. Also had an older Dawson ICE magwell on it. No problems. Just ordered a brand new Dawson ICE “Big Hands” version and there’s no way it’ll fit. Has to do with the front of the cutout for the front lip. Not enough room. Anyone have any ideas if Dawson has changed something between generations or differences between regular and big hands version?

    Any ideas greatly appreciated!

  2. Really no difference in the pull and geometry. The main difference is lighter hammers have faster lock time but possibly need heavier main spring to ensure proper primer ignition. Not always, but depends on primer. Also, the Koenig hammer makes an odd “tuning fork” ringing sound when dropped. The others don’t.

@cheers623 Im currently stumped on the installation of this SVI magwell on my 1911...It came with a short little MSH pin that I thought was incorrect as it wasn't long enough to capture each side of the magwell and run through the MSH, etc. but after speaking to CS at SVI they let me know that was indeed the correct pin for all 1911 magwell platforms. Any tips, tricks, guidance would be MUCH appreciated sir 🙏

I believe the instructions are that you install the MSH and the magwell with the little/standard size pin provided. Then you take the slack out of the magwell fitment by tightening the screws in the bottom of the magwell part. I think that’s correct. Hope that helps!

Will SV triggers fit the Evo frame without a lot of filing on the the trigger track?

John, I’ve fit 4 of the EVO grips and each of them worked fine in the area of the trigger bow tracks. There’s was some filing required on the top and bottoms of the SV trigger shoe though. Each was a little different. YMMV

  5. I was signed up fo the last class and had to cancel due to work conflicts. I’ve had Don build a few guns/top ends for me and he’s a true craftsman and fantastic gentleman. I’ll be going to one of his next classes. The class fee is well worth the knowledge and insight you’ll get from him. And of course the gun you leave with would be great for competition, since you’ll know EXACTLY how it works and was built!

  6. Not sure of the “best”...but can tell you some of the worst is Federal that has a NT stamped on the head. All I can figure is that the NT stands for non-toxic? I want to say I remember them making Frangible loads that were marked NT? Anyway, this stuff sucks and crushes primers EVERYTIME! Total crap. Believe it or not, I can now feel a piece in the resizing die...kind of springy/spongey feeling. I’m almost 100% now in catching them in the downstroke in my Dillon 550B.

Anyway, I think they’re crimped primer pockets. A buddy of mine bought a ton of it and had to swage the primer pockets to be able to use it.

    Hope this helps avoid “bargains”!!!

  7. Dawson makes two different basepads. One specifically for use WITH the no-gap Ice insert...these can sometimes be finicky when trying to fit and account for the various manufacturers of 1911 frames. The other type of basepad will work with any other magwell EXCEPT the no-gap insert. Without seeing the actual basepad you have, it’s hard to know which situation exists. Could you post a pic of the basepad in question?

Of course, Dawson would be the best folks to ask.

  8. Hey guys...keep coming back to Single Stack for various reasons. Just a good fit for my skill set. Anyway, I’ve been using an STI Trojan .40 for a few years and like it. Reliable after figuring out mags, loads, etc. Anyway, to the question. SA is now making a 10mm Operator. I’m wondering if anyone here has actually been successful with using their long-loaded .40sw ammo in a 10mm chambered barrel? Accuracy or other concerns? I load my .40 for both Limited and Single Stack to 1.185” COAL. I’d REALLY like to keep my loads down to one kind for both Divisions. The SA 10mm Operator is street priced at $1400-ish. I could have someone make me a custom for $1800-ish....but have to wait. Any actual experience using a 10mm Single Stack 1911with high volume .40 shooting?

    Thanks in advance.

  9. Anyone ever try using the new SV magwells for their metal grips on a PT EVO grip? The EVO grips are “supposed” to be compatible with existing plastics grip magwells...but it’s far from 100%.

Was wondering if the SV ones would be an option.

    Thanks for any help!

  10. I’ve used both the Double Tap and the PT. They’re both good, it just depends on what you’re looking for. The Double Tap is smaller and not as wide a paddle. Dropped right in for me with only having to fit the sear-stop stud to my ignition parts. The PT has huge paddles and will most likely need to be filed/ground/etc to the width you desire. No big deal, just a heads up.

I prefer the PT because I’ve got big hands and thumbs. I needed more clearance and the PT gives it to me. YMMV

  11. Have been on both sides of using or not using them. Always used the blue Wilson’s. Never had any shred or cause a malfunction, but I check them when I clean my competition guns. Maybe every 4-500 rounds. Always changed them out at the beginning of each shooting season. Now that I’m shooting Open, I’m going to replace them every few months because my 9Major gun is clearly the most “stressed” pistol I’ve ever run as far as wear and tear being obvious on the gun!
