However, it fails to make Minor for .38 Special. Hell, it doesn't even make ICORE's minimum out of a 6" barrel. It looks very comparable to Trail Boss for .44 Special, just a few FPS faster. bowenbuilt Posted August 9, 2017 Share Posted August 9, 2017 I can only speak for the guns I own but during testing it in 9 and .40 it was equal to N320 and just a tick quicker in 9mm in comparison. I was very happy with the first batch that came in, it was clean and did not smoke. I purchased a good quantity of it after I ran through the first batch and as soon as the weather got a little humid it smoked like a freight train and to get it to clean up I had to get up to 135 PF. Don't get me wrong, it plenty usable but if they had left it alone I would still be using it and perfectly happy. Clean Shot didn't do any better in the Summer conditions, I had to look under the smoke to see my target. Sport Pistol does not have this problem so for me it is the hands down winner. I guess it's possible that it'll go the 100+ FPS over the stated load data I need to make PF. I'll probably stick to my other powders for now. It's cleaner than Prima V. Very close to N320. It seems to be more consistent than N320 and every bit as accurate possibly more accurate. I will need to do a side by side comparison to know for sure. What was the cartridge length? The Alliant data showed that with 3.5 and a 145 bullet that they were at over 140pf but it was loaded to 1.1 I believe so your use of more powder to get less pf is a bit of a surprise given the 10gn difference in bullet weight. I don't remember what the velocity of those particular loads were, I do know there wasn't a big difference though. I told him about the positive experience others here have had with 9 & 40 with it and he was super cool and ordered four 1# bottles to put on his shelves to try it out. As soon as it comes in he is going to call me so I can pick up a bottle to try. It was my first time ever in that shop. Now that is customer service! ??? Ohvall Posted September 6, 2017 Share Posted September 6, 2017 Looking at the online load data from Alliant and Hodgdon, Sport Pistol seems to be very similar to Win 231/Hodgdon HP-38. I've done a little testing in 45 ACP and Sport PIstol performs much like Win 231 with light loads in that cartridge. The Sport Pistol granules are also about the same size as those for Win 231 - maybe a little smaller. I'm going to test to see how the two powders compare in density. I was able to test 2 loads 3.3 grains and 3.4 grains. Shot 4 for the 3.3 grain load is suspect. I am using a Caldwell G2 chronograph and I forgot to hit the start button on my phone so i did not capture the first string which was 12 shots and the SD was a lot tighter. matteekay Posted October 1, 2017 Share Posted October 1, 2017 I finally got to try it in 9mm and really like it. 3.4gr behind a 147gr SNS coated RN made power with room to spare (I want to say about a 136 - need to find my notebook). Nice recoil impulse and very accurate. I found it a little smokey but I wouldn't call it "bad". I shoot Trail Boss with bare lead though so my scales are probably off. These are the 9mm loads, I'll put the 40 loads in that thread. I tested 125gr BBI and 135gr Blue Bullet through a CZ P10C and STI Eagle 5" - both with OEM barrel. Brass was RP once fired and Remington 1 1/2 primer. Each pistol is saved as its own file and the bullets are split across tabs at the bottom. With Blue Bullets 147 RN, which weigh out at 150 or just a bit heavier, at 1.125 COL... I'm seeing around a 133 PF (using 150 for PF computations) out of an 5" M&P with a 5" Apex barrel. Hope that helps. I've also used same basic load with Prima V and they are very close. I think the sport pistol might be a little cleaner, hard to say. I like them both.
