American Select load data

After attending a regional match i learned that several competitors prefer to run American Select powder with Bayou Bullets, so i decided to give it a try. I’ll be trying it in 38 special first (have lots of loaded 9mm on hand at the moment). But I’m having some trouble finding load data. Anyone willing to share their recipes? Bullet is 160 gn RN. Thanks.

Hello: I use American Select with lead and coated bullets in .38 special.  The data from the Alliant 2004 online reloading manual shows a max load of 4.3 gr. under a 158 gr.  lswc and 4.7 gr.  under a 125 gr lead round nose.  If you will send me a PM, I will send you a copy of the 2004 alliant manual and my chronological results from my gp-100.   It might take a few days cause I'm in the hospital right now post knee replacement surgery.

Ladder I did yesterday. Gun was a 5 " pro series S&W 686.
Range brass 38spc.
Powder American Select.
WSP primers,
1.450 OAL
147 Grain moly .358 Precision bullet LTC,
7 shots each.

3.8 grs,  Av 781 SD 19
4.0grs    AV 835   SD 15
4.2 grs,  Av 851   SD 10
4.4 grs,   AV 882   SD 7.2.

Seems to like a fuller case volume,, looks like would be pretty decent at 130 pf,, probably not so good at 105.
Basically just burning the stuff up in practice ammo,, loaded a bunch of cowboy loads in 44 magnum brass but havent choronoed them. Dotn really like the way it meters , flakes are kinda big,   My go to powders are Tight group and WST.
I think whenI use up my stock of that I will try Alliant Sport Pistol.   Plus I need at least one more powder in the Power Pistol  burn rate range but lower flash, something for 40 and 357 pin loads, and medium 44 mag. Right now have some HS6 to try. I also have old reliable 2400 but seems like I can do what 2400 can do with a bit faster powder as my 44 mag and 357 are 5"

THIS WILL BE MY IDPA LOAD UNLESS I GET BETTER RESULTS WITH THE 148 GR EGGLESTON ROUND NOSE BULLETS.

(ACCORDING TO THE ALLIANT 2004 LOAD DATA, 4.7 GR. OF AMERICAN SELECT IS THE MAXIMUM STANDARD PRESSURE .38 SPECIAL LOAD WITH 125 GR. LEAD BULLETS.  YOU CAN PROBABLY BUMP THIS UP BY A COUPLE OF TENTHS IF YOU ARE SHOOTING A .357 MAGNUM REVOLVER.)

BONUS INFO REGARDING VV N-310 IN .38 SPECIAL!

WARNING!  THIS IS AN "OFF-LABEL" USE OF N-310 IN .38 SPECIAL AND IS NOT BASED ON ANY PUBLISHED DATA.  WORK UP WITH CAUTION.  THE LOADS SEEMED QUITE MILD AND HAD NO PRESSURE SIGNS.  THAT SAID, USE THESE ONLY IN A .357 MAGNUM REVOLVER.

Joe, try Ramshot Silhouette powder.  It is PP burn speed with almost no flash.  I'd say no flash, because I haven't ever seen one with Sil, but there might be a tad.  Really clean as well.

I'll check out some data on it.. Got so many different types of powder now I need to go through.
Looks like American select isnt working too well till u get up near its max loadings. Might have to chrono my 44 loads. Press is set up for 38 though, and I will probably load 1000 or so of the 38's at 4.5 and shoot for groups, see what I get.

Alright here’s some results from experimenting with American Select in 38 special loads:

Out of a GP100 4 inch barrel:

160 gn Bayou RN

3.7 gn Am.Sel.

Avg. Vel.: 759.2 fps

Hi: 777

Lo: 739

Std Dev: 12.69

138 gn Bayou WC

4.2 gn Am. Sel.

Avg Vel: 953.6

Hi: 970

Lo: 937

Std Dev: 12.91

I also did some bench rest accuracy testing. The following groups are all at 25 yards from a rest open sights. This is comparing several powders using the same brand primer, same headstamp of brass, same bullet. Light taper crimp. Same OAL of 1.487 for the RNs. (Forgot to measure the OAL for the WCs.) Groups are measured from center to center, measured in inches.

I shot all the 160 gn Bayou RN from a S&W 627 PC 5 inch barrel. 8 shot groups.

4.0 gn of Am. Sel.: 1 and 13/16ths

4.0 gn of VV320: 2 and 7/16ths

3.8 gn of Bullseye: 3 and 5/16ths

4.0 gn of W231: 3 inches

I shot all the 138 gn Bayou WC from a Dan Wesson 715 6 inch barrel. 6 shot groups

4.2 gn of Am. Sel.: 1 and 5/16ths

4.4 gn of VV320: 2 and 3/16ths

4.3 gn of Bullseye: 2 and 2/16ths

4.3 gn of W231: 2 and 6/16ths

The VV320 had the least flash and recoil. The other three were all about the same. Accuracy testing was done blind (meaning i didn’t know which powder i was shooting until afterwards).

Frankly I’m surprised how well American Select did.
