Mixing powders

Recommended Posts

I inadvertently mixed some ClayDot (Clays copy) with some VV N320, Clays and N320 are 31 & 32 on the burn chart.
I'm loading 9mm, should I toss it or try the mixed?

Toss it. Even though they are close on the burn chart, you won't know what you get.

New powder is cheaper than replacing a gun or other body part.

Dispose of it.  As above, use as fertilizer, but be sure to spread it out.

I have mixed lots of the same powder..but these 2 are a different profile consistency...I would not try it regardless.

There are some other uses for it around the forth of July.

Great advice from RA. Your life is too valuable to save a few pennies on mixing powder.

Burn it, if you have a place where you can spread it on a flattish surface outdoors. Go easy: a pile can give you a quick fireball.

Or you could just eat it. Cheaper and less painful than a vasectomy but doesn't last....

How much powder are we talking about?

I would not worry so much about safety if you are using reasonable loads.  What would bother me is load inconsistency.  N320 is fine and CD is a flake.  There is no way you would get and even mix into each case.

Here is what I would do.  I 'borrow' a fine mesh strainer from the kitchen and pour your mix through it.  If the mesh is the right size, the N320 will fall through as you shake it.  The larger CD flakes will not.

Mixing powder is never a good thing, rather than take a chance on blowing up an expensive gun (it does happen) to save a $28 (a # of N320), I tossed the whole #. Thanks for the input.

I've seen those drawings before.  Awesome work!

I agree...even if you pay $40 (locally) for a pound of N320, it totally is worth it over paying possibly thousands for a new firearm, let alone a new prosthetic hand/arm.  It just isn't worth the chance.  Heck, I can spend $40 in a couple of days for lunch (ya, I'm a fat guy.  LOL), so it's worth spending that for a pound of powder to make sure I'm safe.  Just dump it.
