parisite
I am thinking of having a custom barrel put on my Smith revolver to be a dedicated benchrest wadcutter gun. What twist rate do you guys recommend? What was the common twist rate of the old PPC revolvers they used back in the day?
Service Desk
1:14 seems to be a favourite for 148 HBWC ....Douglas and Shillen are available as blanks or pre-machined barrels.
noylj
If I could order, I would love to try 1:20, but anything from 1:12-1:16 is probably just as good.
stardust tommy
In Europe the lothar walther 1/10 twist barrels are popular, normal rifling or polygonal. SS or chro moly we shoot 125gr wadcutters and 148gr wadcutters gr T

Get in contact with Ray Pulver (Holland Precision Barrels in Australia) he makes cut rifled revolver barrel blanks in 1:20 twist.
stardust tommy
read this, http://www.bullseyeforum.net/t815-38-special-full-wadcutter-stability the 38 HBWC is an old timer with a lot of experience/knowledge, you do not have to try to invent the wheel again ;-)
twister
What is the stock twist rate on a 586 Smith? Thanks, Dave.
stardust tommy
1/18.75 I believe, back in the days the colt had the advantage of a 1/14 twist for shooting HBWC do a search on barrel twist .38 HBWC and Jerry Keefer, he build lots of PPC revolvers, Bullsye and ppc pistols. he just did a mod52 rebuild with a custom home made barrel (I believe 1/12 douglas barrel) gr Tom
twister
Tommy thanks for the reply. Is there a specific bullet that would work best with a stock smith barrel? Or, do I shoot the 148 grain hbwc, and do the best I can with that?
stardust tommy
I have shot a lot of .38 HBWC, not 1 in a stock barrel... try to find someone that can adjust the trhroat for wadcutters, ream the cilinders to the same diameter. the magic number for 148hbwc is 690 -720ft/s, the winchester factory HBWC is very good
