Used Edge

I am looking at getting a 1911 style gun for shooting uspsa and steel challenge. I am stuck between getting one of the RIA's that holds 17 rnds. Or splurging and just getting a used STI edge. I dont have the ability to reload anything at the moment. Are sti edge's set up to shoot major? Or can you configure them to shoot factory ammo?

Any help is appreciated!

So you would say a used sti would be better than a RIA? And the edge should work with factory 9 ammo? Plus it would be nice to get used to a 2011 that way when I drop some money for a open gun I'm semi used to the feel of a 2011.

Nothing at all wrong with the RIAs.  I currently have one in 9mm and did have a .40.  They are great guns for the price point and with a little trigger smoothing/upgrades can be fantastic.  I just acquired a .40 Edge and it is nicer.  Triigger still will need work out of the box but other fit/finish is a bit nicer.

I already have a 9mm springfield. So it would probably be easier if i got a 9mm edge.

While I understand your thinking I believe you would be better served with a 40 Edge. Limited is better geared with a 40 pistol and yes there are those that shoot minor in Limited but generally they tend to be highly skilled veterans (generally). Best of luck

I think if you're going to get a gun for the purpose of shooting Limited division you really should just get the 40 version so you can make Major and get the scoring benefits. 9mm might make it so you can just use the same ammo for both guns but realistically 40 factory isn't that much more than 9mm is.

The resale ability will also be a little higher with a 40 because that's what everyone looks for mainly when they look for a used Limited gun.

I would go for the used Edge, because it is a better gun than your other choices.  Personally, I'd use the SA 9mm for Steel Challenge and the 2011 in 40 for Limited.

If you want to stay with 9mm, I'd still recommend you get the used Edge.  Blazer 115gr ammo makes Minor and shoots flat.  It would be perfect for SC.  For Limited Minor you have lots of bullet choices.  Freedom Munitions offers rounds loaded with X-treme plated bullets for about 20 cents a round.  Several of the shooters at my home club swear by their 135gr rounds.  Later, when you decide to go to Open, it will be simple to convert the 9mm Edge.

There is no such thing as a used Edge. Only previously owned ones. They are, arguably, the best competition gun on the planet for their price range, and once properly set-up they are accurate, and reliable.

Shooting Major is always a better option score wise, and in .40 S&W the recoil control is infinitely better than 9 mm Luger loaded to the same PF.

Ended up getting an RIA. Just couldnt stomach throwing 1500+ for a gun. I will say that the 1911 feels very good in my hands and the trigger is not bad at all. Feels so much better than the stock trigger on my XD. I ripped that sorry excuse for a trigger out before it saw its second trip to the range.

That being said I can only imagine what a custom built 2011 will feel like.

If you're handy you'll be able to get that trigger down to around 3lbs with the stock parts.  Even lower if you want to spend on a EGW or Brazos trigger kit.  I really liked the STI short trigger that Dawson has in my RIA.  Dawson also has an Ice magwell that will go on and work with their basepads.  I tried one of the TF Fattie magwells on mine and eventually got it to work with Dawson extensions but I had to remove alot of material.

Okay so two things

1.

What mags work for it? I guess I can get the mec gar ones here right? https://mec-gar.com/store/product_detail/para-usa-p18-9mm-.38-super-17-standard-blue

Not expensive but once I get 3-4 of em... :(

What base pads can I use? These say they are for para style mags so idk if these work. http://mbxextreme.com/index.php?page=ParaBasepads

I just don't wanna spend money on stuff that I gotta send back.

2. Do I just follow a youtube video on polishing the trigger components?

I had a bunch of mags with mine but some I never could get to work.  The tube lengths vary.  If I were doing it again I would bite the bullet and just buy 3 MBX 140mm mags.  I know it is $390 but they will run.

Yes on a youtube video.  It is really about cleaning up the burrs that RIA leaves on the edges.  A little 400-2000 grit sandpaper and some tweaking of the sear spring.  Pay attention to the trigger bar and how well it slides.

About $83 per mag.  A few more for the bright mags.  The 2-3 of these I had worked.

I grabbed the TF magwell. Is it just a matter of sliding the thing on and pushing the pin through it?  Or am I going to have to mess with the trigger spring housing? Looks like a pretty easy install if I don;'t have to mess with the trigger stuff.

Oh and looking at my gun it does not have a rail on it. It is the target model. So does that mean I can use the safariland 014 holster for it? I found a youtube video that had a guy shooting an RIA in 40 an he said he used that holster.

It looked like some of the other RIA's had the mainspring housing sticking out from the bottom of the gun because they had magwells from the factory. I guess I was unaware that I couldnt put a magwell on a target version without doing some modifications.

I use a Taylor Freelance magwell on my RIA with no problems, guess I was lucky, also have been using STI mags with Dawson base pads? they work, but the bullet has to ride the ramp into the chamber, I have modified STI's to help with this, but got a chance to try an MBX, and it locks into the mag release higher for better alignment to the chamber. I know they are expensive, but you can feel the difference when racking a round into the chamber. You can get a 3# trigger out of the stock parts. My biggest issue with my RIA was the barrel, sewer pipe, have a KKM in it now and life is much better. When all is said and done, knowing what I know now, if you can find a reasonably priced used Edge(folks think they have gold),you will have about the same cost into the RIA, and you will be shooting better sooner, than working the issues as time progresses with the RIA.
