Rolex
I was checking each charge and finding it went from 7.2gr to 6.9 or to 7.4. On Dillon 650.
Hi-Power Jack
3 hours ago, Rolex said: it went from 7.2gr to 6.9 or to 7.4. VERY difficult to measure a single powder charge of 7 grains (1/1,000th of a pound), on most scales we use for reloading. Just as possible that you are Not getting the variation in powder throws that you think you're getting - You Might be getting the variation in trying to measure 1/10th of a grain (1/10,000th of a pound). A draft, or static cling or a bunch of other things could account for the tiny differences in measured weight. The BEST way to find if you're throwing consistent charges is accuracy - fire a 12 - 15 shot group at 25 yards with iron sights or 50 yards with a dot - and see how accurate your load is. If it's accurate enough for you, don't worry about 6.9 or 7.4 - just practice, practice, practice.
zzt
Dillon's powder measures are not the most consistent in the world. I've found that operating the press erratically causes variations. I used the following procedure when I was loading on a Dillon. Be consistent in operation. Same movement and same pressure every time. When you have 5 or 6 consistent operations, stop and measure the powder in the case. Repeat another 5 or 6 and measure again. Your variation should be no more than 0.1gr. If it is, you have something wrong with the press. I insist on accurate drops, because I want SDs in the single digits for all my competition loads. I am dialed in at 7.1 grains steady on my 650. I have checked every 10th round for the first 100 and its nuts on. Now, when I let it sit and start for a day and start reloading again, I get a 7.4 grains, so I always dump the first couple and check again to confirm I am dropping the right amount
