ChuckS
It seems that there is going to be a change that allows honorably-discharged vets to shop the Exchange system on-line! https://militaryadvantage.military.com/2017/01/millions-more-vets-to-be-able-to-shop-at-exchanges-online/

Youngeyes
I didn't see this when you posted it Chuck. Great news. Thanks for posting it, and big thanks to all the vets in the Benos universe. You deserve this and more.
Sarge
aafes is struggling just like they always have. We rarely bust the BX anymore. Pretty limited in selection and mostly higher quality(expensive) items that can be bought much cheaper anywhere. The commissary is great though. Pretty unbeatable prices and lots of selection. Giving vets access to the commissary would be great
DesertTortoise
Just a fair warning that aafes online can have some good deals but be ready to wait (up to 2+) months for products to arrive !Sent from my XT1635-01 using Tapatalk
ChuckS
Ok, I told you I would be back with more information. This is a link to an article in Stars and Stripes. It tells the current state of the program. https://www.stripes.com/news/us/veterans-will-soon-get-to-shop-tax-free-online-with-aafes-1.478974#.WXJvIOmQyUl As it shows, you go to: https://www.vetverify.org/ for verification. Since I was discharged in 1977, I have evaded digitization so I am doing the process to get brought into DEERS https://www.tricare.mil/DEERS. I will report back as things progress. Good luck! Chuck THANKS, ChuckS. I am a vet--did not retire but I am "for" veteran support. I volunteered to help support Wounded Warriors but they asked for money. They were barking up the wrong tree with me. ChuckS
Well, they finally found my DD-214 stone tablets and fortunately for me, I still had my DD-256. I am finally verified...
Steve RA
Since I go out in 60 they probably did not have a DD-256 then. So, out of curiosity, what is it ??? I do have a 214.

I do have a 214. The issue with the DD214 is that it does not show discharge status. Here is a link to an explanation of the 256 https://historyhub.history.gov/docs/DOC-1088

Steve RA
Thanks for the explanation. I received something that looked like that shortly after I got out, it fell by the wayside a long time ago.

I also had a copy of a NAVPERS "Record of Discharge" form from my service jacket. It indicated the date and type of discharge and the fact that a 256 was issued to me but the exchange folks claimed it was not a "federal government form". I am pretty sure NAVPERS is (or was) a federal entity
Steve RA
Looked more closely at my DD-214 and is shows "Character of Service" as Honorable and says a DD Form 217A was issued. Course it was dated 29SEP60 so I'm sure the forms may have changed somewhat as the years went by. I guess the 214 is still being used. I looked up the Form 217 and it was a wallet sized card (which I don't have anymore).
