The 16 lbs I recently bought have very dark gray to black colors of grain. Just like you see from the picture below. Is this okay? Did they accidently put different powder or something? Bamboo Posted January 12, 2017 Share Posted January 12, 2017 Load and chrono would be my recommendation. I do that whenever I change lot numbers even with powders I have been using for decades. Some powders are known to have significant lot to lot variances. Prima V is a mainly a shotgun powders so it is blended to be consistent in shotgun target loads, it may or may not be consistent in hand gun loads. hwansikcjswo Posted January 17, 2017 Author Share Posted January 17, 2017 (edited) I have loaded a couple hundred with the new (Dark) batch of Prima V. The difference I noticed while loading is that the powder weight was 3.7 grains with older one but now it went up to 4.0 grains with the new one with the same powder dispenser setting. So I had to set it down to 3.7 grains. I have not shot the ammo yet. The weather here is really bad this week. Bamboo Posted January 29, 2017 Share Posted January 29, 2017 Not terribly uncommon, especially with the shotgun powders. Solo1K comes to mind as being known for having lot to lot variances in handguns. Since most shot gunners reload using bushing powder throws based on charts, and to make the wad column the correct height so they crimp well, the shotgun powders are trying to keep their energy per unit of volume the same for the shotgun reloaders, while metallic reloaders want the energy per unit of weight to be the same. BeerBaron Posted January 31, 2017 Share Posted January 31, 2017 that is a fairly significant variance. as pointed out the shotgun powders can have a bit of variance but that is a massive change in colour and performance. the grains even look a bit different to me in that pic? I know it's expensive but VV N320 I have found to be very consistent. it's expensive but it's lovely powder for minor 9mm loads.... and at the end of the day next to brass powder is the cheapest part of the load. even shooting 10s of thousands of rounds a year the cost difference from cheap powder to expensive is not that great. Was the weather conditions on each day you chrono'd similar? Both batches were chronoed the same day. Fired about 10 shots each (new batch 5 shots -> old batch 5 shots X2). I didn't record them but guesstimated the averages of the two batches. which was about 50 fps difference. SInce I used range mix brass, the SD is higher then using one brass company. BillGarlandJr Posted March 9, 2017 Share Posted March 9, 2017 I've been using PV from the 16055 batch, and while this is my first go around with it, it is performing as I expected. I was told it was comparable to TG in terms of charge weights and velocities, and that is what I'm finding. Right now I'm loading 3.5gr of PV under a 135gr from The Blue Bullets loaded to an OAL of 1.125. I'm shooting that out of my P320 FS and getting about a 130pf, which is what I expected, and about what I'd expect with TG as well. I'd say its good to go. B_RAD Posted March 9, 2017 Share Posted March 9, 2017 I just started a thread in the 9mm section. The newer 16055 is slower. It's a tad slower than TG in my CZ. I'd say 10-15 FPS slower.
