Prima V, Different batch, different colors?

Recommended Posts

I am a Prima V user.

The first 30lbs I bought have light gray color to the powder.

However!!!! The 16 lbs I recently bought have very dark gray to black colors of grain. Just like you see from the picture below.

Is this okay? Did they accidently put different powder or something?

I have not loaded with the darker powder batch yet.

Any ideas?

Load and chrono would be my recommendation.

I do that whenever I change lot numbers even with powders I have been using for decades.  Some powders are known to have significant lot to lot variances.  Prima V is a mainly a shotgun powders so it is blended to be consistent in shotgun target loads, it may or may not be consistent in hand gun loads.

I too use this powder, Chic, which batch has the darker grains?

I have loaded a couple hundred with the new (Dark) batch of Prima V.

The difference I noticed while loading is that the powder weight was 3.7 grains with older one but now it went up to 4.0 grains with the new one with the same powder dispenser setting. So I had to set it down to 3.7 grains.

I have not shot the ammo yet. The weather here is really bad this week. I will report back when I get to shoot'em

Not terribly uncommon, especially with the shotgun powders.  Solo1K comes to mind as being known for having lot to lot variances in handguns.  Since most shot gunners reload using bushing powder throws based on charts, and to make the wad column the correct height so they crimp well,  the shotgun powders are trying to keep their energy per unit of volume the same for the shotgun reloaders, while metallic reloaders want the energy per unit of weight to be the same.

I chronoed the new batch.

50 FPS lower than the older batch.

This is not a good news.

I will just have to put more powder now.

Just to make sure I know which is which, 16055 is the newer, darker, slower batch. Correct?

All 11 lbs of mine is 16055.

Good to know it's gonna be slower. I'll chrono this weekend.

3.7gr 125gr Leatherhead bullets were shooting around 1020fps.

I would like to hear how it went from you when you get back from the range.

that is a fairly significant variance. as pointed out the shotgun powders can have a bit of variance but that is a massive change in colour and performance. the grains even look a bit different to me in that pic?

I know it's expensive but VV N320 I have found to be very consistent. it's expensive but it's lovely powder for minor 9mm loads.... and at the end of the day next to brass powder is the cheapest part of the load. even shooting 10s of thousands of rounds a year the cost difference from cheap powder to expensive is not that great.

My Prima V came from batch no PB15110.

3.0gr under a 147 gets me 132 PF from a 4.75" poly-rifled Tanfoglio.

FIFY.

Ha ha I had to ask MM what "FIFY" meant.

I'm not up on the lingo the kids use these days.

I'm gonna try to chrono some this weekend.  Gonna start with the ones I've got loaded.

If you post your load info please include all the info.

Bullet weight and type/size, OAL, etc.

I will even make note of temp, distance to chrono.

OP,

How many rounds did you chrono?

Was the weather conditions on each day you chrono'd similar?

Both batches were chronoed the same day.

Fired about 10 shots each (new batch 5 shots -> old batch 5 shots X2). I didn't record them but guesstimated the averages of the two batches. which was about 50 fps difference.

SInce I used range mix brass, the SD is higher then using one brass company.

The average for the new batch was at around 1020 fps, the old batch was around 1070 fps

Anyone else have an update on this? I just ordered 10 lbs and was thinking of moving away from TG but this is a but concerning.

Like others have said, this is not uncommon so maybe it's just what is expected

I've been using PV from the 16055 batch, and while this is my first go around with it, it is performing as I expected. I was told it was comparable to TG in terms of charge weights and velocities, and that is what I'm finding. Right now I'm loading 3.5gr of PV under a 135gr from The Blue Bullets loaded to an OAL of 1.125. I'm shooting that out of my P320 FS and getting about a 130pf, which is what I expected, and about what I'd expect with TG as well. I'd say its good to go.

I just started a thread in the 9mm section.

The newer 16055 is slower.

It's a tad slower than TG in my CZ. I'd say 10-15 FPS slower.

I'm going to have to try 3.4-3.5 gr with a 147 gr Xtrme to hopefully get up to 130 pf.

Just got some of this powder today (batch PB15276), I'm going to give this a try through my Walther Q5 with some coated lead 125grn. After digging around here I think I'll probably be around 3.7 grains.
