Dealing with trash talkers

Since you're shooting better than him, next time he starts up just turn to him with a smile of sheer joy on your face and tell him, "Your tears are delicious." After that if he makes any further attempts, just slowly close your eyes in pleasure and and make "MMMmmmmmm" sounds. Maybe throw in a whispered "Yummy" to drive it home.

He'll look for more cooperative victims or lose his cool and get himself ejected.

This is pretty much my exact inner dialogue whenever this happens.

FTDMFR, how many local matches do you shoot each month?

What is your current classification?

Are you there just shooting (USPSA?) matches for fun?

Or do you have a genuine and passionate interest in improving?

If the latter, may I suggest skipping the match where this douchebag is at and spend that time practicing, reloading, or dry firing?

Do that for a year. Then come back and totally stomp that douchebagg's shooting into the dirt. Stomp everyone else's while you're at it too.

Barring that, my only other piece of advice is karma has a way of sneaking up on people like that.

The best solution for this is to NOT allow their antics to affect your performance.

Or to use it constructively perhaps, for some reason trash talk from an opponent used to be good for my pool game, it was sort of a key that I needed to focus on the task at hand.

Have not had to deal with the issue at a match, lots of bs in the B-C-D class group but no ill intent, perhaps if I get better.

You can turn it around and put the monkey on their back by saying something like "OK - show us how a real man does it - we'll all be watching." Some of the braggers will get nervous and blow the stage then. Some won't. Might be worth a try. If it works they will look foolish by their own doing.

One of my sayings is - "A big mouth is always connected to a small mind."

Get custom fitted plugs vs the electronic muffs, you won't be able to hear much at that point.

If you are paying attention to background noise at that point it is most definitely effecting your mental management.

Crush him. Have him driven before you, and hear the lamentation of his woman.

Yes, I had that happen to me one time in the last 15 years. It wasn't really directed at me, but after I got the stand by command, I stopped, took the RO and scorekeeper with me, and went right over to the guy. Went right up to him, and said have a big cup of shut the f*#k up. This is a game of respect, you are not respecting the shooter, or any one else on the squad. You can't control your behavior, then you don't belong here. He started getting froggy, so I pulled his score sheet from the stack, and handed it to him. I said you touch me and you will be under arrest for simple attempt assault. At that point he stormed off, and I contacted the match director. He didn't get his money back, and I never saw him again.

Don't put up with that shit. As Chuck S can tell you, I don't put up with that. I have escorted visitor's off the stage for refusing to put on eye protection.

Out shoot them... take it as challenge. If it gets out of hand; take them behind the berm or to the parking lot and make sure you don't lose. Though if you kick their ass... they will usually make a bigger ass of themselves (I'm calling the police...wah...wah). If you simply out shoot them they simply look dumb.

However, trash talking amongst friends is all good.

Dealt with a bit of trash talking (mostly friendly but a lot of condescension) from a few people over the last several months about how I couldn't hang in USPSA being a Bianchi shooter, or that I am underestimating what takes and that just because I'm accurate doesn't mean shit with speed, movement, reloads, obstacles, etc. Shot my first match tonight and got 1st place out of like 38 shooters, including Master and A-class shooters. That shut 'em up, that's all it takes. Granted it was a local match, but I had never done it. There is nothing a person can say after you do that. I think I like USPSA, gonna try some more of it, with the Open Glock I built in my garage.

How do you guys deal with someone on your squad talking trash, not in a screwing around kind of way, but with genuine malice, trying to screw up your shooting? Like saying shit to you as you LAMR. Assuming you're stuck on a squad with them.

My current approach is to ignore them and shoot how I shoot, but sometimes I do let it affect my performance.

I've considered going full-on a_-hole mode and throwing it back x10, which would probably be fun, but it might also affect my performance.

What do you guys do?

I usually shoot with good buddies of mine so we always give eachother crap. But Ive always taken it as joking around so I never let it affect me but take it as motivation to shoot better than them. If I ever encounter someone I dont know who starts trash talking me, I would definitely bring it up with the match director and have something done about it.

Poor sportsmanship has no place if you ask me we go out to have fun not to be badger ed by some butt wad I would go get the ro and have him come over and ask the guy with the ro present if he has some problem with you and can we go ahead and solve it right now if he says there is no problem ask him why he keeps acting like an ass then. Most likely he will be totally shocked and the problem will be resolved. If not it will be noted and you can to the md.

I'm fully expect a healthy dose of trash talk in my upcoming foray into the sport. My training buddy is a marine and can lay it on pretty thick. He's good enough to back it up though. But anything coming from him is generally good natured and in fun. Haven't had to deal with a real jerk yet.

I learned a long time ago to tune out trash talkers. Listening to them does no good so I just don't seem to hear them. In archery I actually used ear plugs so I wouldn't be distracted by noise and talking. With my pistol I take the person doing the trashing at a level of understanding.

What does it matter what they say? It won't affect my shooting or performance. It's not like we are shooting for big bucks anyway.

Hand him an greasy engine oil drain plug and say, have fun driving home.

He will either be worried an shoot like crap or will run to check his car.

^joke. Just kick him in the crotch repeatedly until your leg is too tired to kick again, then switch legs.

^still a joke .... but would probably be useless as he's undoubtedly ball-less and would be unharmed.

I would tell the range officer his violation of the sportsmanship rules is affecting your shooting and politely ask him to do his job.

Wow! That sucks. The people I shoot with are awesome, nothing but supportive and helpful. They are what makes shooting USPSA so much fun in south Alabama.
