VW N320 load for 40 Major loaded long, need a starting point

Hi,

I want to try VW N320 given that everyone swears by it.

I need a starting point for 40 S&W major loaded long (OAL around 1.200) to use in an SVI, using 180gr bullets, either FMJ or plated.

The load that I am using now is 4.8gr Titegroup, OAL 1.200 with 176gr plated round nose, it gives me a PF of 169.

Thanks,

I tryed TG and had to go over 5.1 to reach 170pf. and the gun was very hot. Now I use 5.0 N320 with 180gr MG OAL 180-190 Not near as hot and much cleaner pf 169

I would start at 4.7 and work up. It's probably going to take 5.0 - 5.2g to make major depending on your barrel.

You'll probably find a ton of info with a quick search.

This is true for me too.

185gr Precission Black Bullet

5.1GR VV320

1.185 OAL

Size neck down

Hornady 180 gr HAP jhp, 4.7 grains, Fed SR primer, Rem 1X case, 1.180 oal got me 168.6 pf at Area 1 this year. Very, very nice soft and accurate load but kinda too close to 165. At home (sea level and a hot 90-95 degrees) it was about 170 pf. 4.8 grains N320, same bullet and 1.200 oal; 171 pf. gun is a 5" Brazos Plus Series.

I would start at 4.7 grains and go up as needed with a jacket bullet, 4.5 grains for moly or lead.

After the responses to my thread on AA-5 & N-350 with 180 gr and then reading this thread, I made up some test loads to chrono with my stock 4" XD.

I noticed that most of the loads listed above are loaded long at around 1.180" OAL so I measured my XD magazines and found they seem to be 1.20", so I decided to try 1.175". I started with 5 rounds at 4.7gr of N-320 then jumped to 5.0. 5.2 and 5.4. For comparison I also loaded 5 more of 4.7gr @ 1.130" to see how the OAL affected velocity in my gun.

I discovered that 1.175" is still too long to feed reliably from my magazines, so I had to use the gun as a single shot. The 1.130" rounds fed fine however. Here are my N-320 results with a 180 CPL Berry's, PACT chrono @ 10'

4.7 @ 1.130" - Avg= 986 (982, 987, 990, 984, 985)- SD=3.0 ES=8

4.7 @ 1.175" - Avg= 961 (964, 974, 950, 956, 963)- SD=9 ES=24

5.0 @ 1.175" - Avg= 966 (954, 966, 956, 979, 973)- SD=10.7 ES=25

5.2 @ 1.175" - Avg= 993 (1006, 998, 972 1001, 987)- SD=13.6 ES=34

5.4 @ 1.175" - Avg= 1012(1010, 1009, 1017, 1004, 1018)- SD=5.9 ES=14

Based on this, the shorter 4.7gr is about the same velocity as the 5.2gr load. I don't know about the pressure but the primers look fine on both - starting to flatten but still with rounded shoulders. The 5.4 load is stating to show squared shoulders and some flattening of the pin indent.

Since 1.175" is too long, would you go with the 1.130"as is or try to find something a little longer ?

I shoot 40 from a Glock 35 and an STI Trojan and load with TiteGroup and 180gr plated bullets, because of the lack of N320 in my neck of the woods - cost too.

My load of 4.7gr/N320 gave me a PF of:-

Trojan - 176000

G35 - 179

OAL = 1.135"
