Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. That's been my experience with thigh holsters too, never could keep them in place. I have a 34" waist so room is a premium, plus I'm going to need some extra space for shotgun shells based on my previous reload attempts. I've been using the load two, then drop one reload method, least I can follow the trail of shells back to where I started from. Been practicing so hopefully that will improve. I'm thinking of four pistol mags since I already have 3 tens and 3 sevens that would give me 10+1 in the gun plus 34 on the belt should get me through most stages even the way I shoot. Then two rifle mags all with ELS so I can dump 1 double pistol pouch and 1 rifle pouch for more shotgun carriers and to lighten the load. Guess it will boil down to using that as a start point and tweaking it as I go along.
  2. Neither my 870 or fal comes with a battery stock. Have been considering adding one since it seems most pro shooters use one. Any ideals on best mounting hardware. Not trying to hijack the thread just seemed a good place to ask.
  3. Thanks guys, lots of good ideals the more I research belt gear the more confused I get. I've looked at the bladetech double pistol mag single rifle mag combo that would give me 4/2. Seems there are alot of options out there. I appreciate the help.
  4. Planning to shoot in Heavy Metal next year wondering how many SS pistol mags and 20 round rifle mags do you normally carry. I realize it changes area to area but my work moves me around so just generally how many. I've seen post where some are using the HSGI thigh carrier which would open up space on the belt since it holds 3/3. Anyone using it how has it worked out? Thanks in advance!
  5. Thanks guys for the help. I do love the way the 870 shoots, but it's also about the only shotgun I've ever used. When you start adding up the cost a new barrel, extended mag tube, and then having someone do the fix on the action bar, (trust me no one would want me anywhere close to a gun and a welder at the same time) I'm probably into the 870 for more than a new Super Nova. But if I shoot the 870 better then that's a worthwhile investment. Matt, what was it you didn't like about the SN, way it swung, or balance etc? Just curious to get your comparison between the two. I guess I'll have to try and find someone that it will let me put a few rounds through theirs to see how it feels. As I said new to three gun and way behind the curve on newer guns. It's been 20 years or so since I have really been involved in guns. My first two matches I realized my equipment was a bit dated I used a SIG P220 Da/Sa I bought in 1992 as a duty weapon for the pistol, a Colt 603 AR with fixed carry handle, 16" barrel I bought in 1986 or 87 and the a fore mentioned 870 which I bought in 79 or 80. For a belt I used my old duty belt which had apperantly shrunk quite a bit in storage. Due to the rifle I shot in Tac Iron and while I wasn't competitive it was a blast. I've been able to pick up a DPSM Oracle in .308 pretty cheap , so now I'm trying to get the shotgun lined out. For the moment my 3 gun aspirations are on temporary hold since my job has sent me deep behind enemy lines for a 4 to 12 month "mission" in California. Since my rifles and magazines aren't legal there they were safely stored. I plan to take the pistol since I have 10 rd mags for it and maybe I can find a place to shoot it some or even a few USPSA matches. Anyone that has a Super Nova/Nova I would like to hear about what makes them so good for 3 gun. Apologies for the long post but since I'm transitioning to CA not a lot of chances to talk guns .
  6. Some advice please. I have shot a couple of matches using my old 870 wingmaster I bought for a patrol gunback in the mid 80's doing the shoot what you have theory of how to get into 3 gun. I've settled on heavy metal as where I want to shoot so here's my delima. The 870 had the barrel cut down to 18.5" when I bought it, thus no choke and no front sight. Should I: A: Shoot it as is until I can afford to upgrade to say a Nova/Super Nova. B: Spend a few bucks buy a front sight and JB Weld it on, not sure how I would align it since no rib on the gun, and buy an extended mag tube. Shoot the gun a year or two until I can afford to upgrade. C: Buy a new 26", barrel, extended mag tube, open the loading port and stick with the 870 until it's worn out. I've read where the 870 isn't the first choice in 3 gun but I'm also feel pretty sure it will be at least a couple of years if ever before it would hold me back. I'm familiar with the gun love how it handles and have little experience with any other shotguns. So what would ya'll do? Thanks for the help!
  7. Thanks mic, I've actually ordered nos to replace everything but the handgaurds as seems none are in stock at the moment. The parts arent wood since these guns actually came with plastic hardware. I should clarify that when I typed HD I meant HM (Heavy Metal ). Sorry! Once I found out that the Belgian made FN FAL are of fairly high value I decided to sell this one, once it has the nos stuff on it and then use that money for a .308 rifle to use in 3 gun. It would be a waste to use this one because as you said they are somewhat expensive and are a bit handicapped as a game gun. But that's not to say I won't end up with another FAL for 3 gun if I do it just won't be a Belgian made one. I have looked at the Voyager looks like a great gun the 18" would seem to suit 3 gun quite well. But I'm kind of back to the drawing board on what to buy. At least I have some time since work has sentenced me to a spell in California so I'll be out there until after the first of the year and as you know evil black rifles aren't welcome there. Since I shoot a single stack .45 which fits their 10 round mag limit hopefully I can find some USPSA matches to hold me over.
  8. Well after doing some research I've found this gun seems to be somewhat rare since it's a Belgian FAL. I bought it as you see it but think I'm going to replace the non stock parts with NOS stuff and search for another heavy metal rifle. I'm not sure what yet but hey great excuse to buy another gun.
  9. I'm currently working in SoCal and was shocked after reading the new laws. Coming from a gun freindly state I had quite a culture shock. I'm lucky that I'll only be here for another 4 months or so. I realize that as a gun owner I'm responsible for knowing local gun laws and that ignorance is no excuse. Shortly after I moved here I took my AR to a local range, I had the gun in a gun bag with a chamber flag. When I went in I was asked if the weapon was CA compliant. My first thought was of course it is it's a semi auto 16" barrel, nothing out of the ordinary. I then learned about the "bullet button". Holy crap!!! So needless to say I didn't get to shoot. Sadly there are many out that don't have the option of moving and have to work within the laws they are given. I should be out of CA before 01/01 but if it's close I'll be shipping my guns home until I can escape. I hope 3 gun survives in some form and for my friends here in the DRC we stand with ya'll.
  10. OK kind of an offbeat question. I know some on here have used a FAL in Heavy Metal. I was wondering if ya'll have any tips to speed up mag reloads. I realize that an FAL reload isn't going to be as quick as an AR pattern rifle or the M1A1 but was curious if someone had a technique that helped them speed up. Thanks!!
