Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I have the slow lot of Solo(1930). At my last chrono session I clocked an avg of 792fps from my 4" 686 with 4.2gr@1.5" with a Berry's 158. Same load out of my other 686 gave me an avg of 779. This was shot in November and it was in the high 40's-low 50's. All of the standard disclaimers apply. Solo varies from lot-to-lot. Start low and work up carefully.
  2. I am investigating for future reference. I am thinking of shooting my stock G35 in Production/SSP and limited/L10. I have Solo1000(the slow lot,1930) and titegroup. I am looking for ideas on loads for both PFs. I am fine with getting a different powder if neither is a good choice. I am just looking to consolidate my reloading purchases a little, so I would like to use the same bullet for both. I realize 40 is slightly more expensive than the 9mm I currently reload for, but if I can use the 40 in all aspects I feel the cost difference is negligible. Thanks! -Dennis
  3. I shot the S&W Nationals match over the weekend without any of the above, just points down. I am happy with myself as I look at as the closest I can come to shooting a clean match. I am an SSP-EX. I know it is not unusual, I was just wondering how many others have done it and how often.
  4. I am experimenting with Solo in various calibers. Today it is 9mm and 130BBI loaded at 1.135. I tried 3.8 and 4.1 and with the 4.1 load, it is full in the 9mm case. Everything I have loaded before has never been close to compressed. It is not packed down hard compressed. I am curious about benefits/negatives of compressed loads. Thanks!
  5. I chrono'd 12 rounds at 3.8 grains and 12 at 4.1 grains(was going for 4.0, but the powder bar settled in at 4.1) out of my 686 last night. From the 3.8 load I got an average of 711fps, 27.09 SD and an extreme spread of 102. The 4.1 load got 757 average FPS, 25.2 SD and an extreme spread of 89. I need 791fps for 125 power factor. I would like to be in the 825-850fps(130-135PF). My Solo lot is 1930, which seems to be the slow batch. I am loading on a 550 with Dillon dies except the seating die(Redding Competition). I am using mixed brass and Federal small pistol primers. My questions to start are... Published loads stop at 4.0 grains of Solo. How much can I push it? Is it crazy to try 4.3 and 4.5? What can I do to tighten up my standard deviation and extreme spread? My 9mm minor load with titegroup have extremes of 30-50 and standard deviations of 10-12 over 30 round strings. I would like to avoid titegroup because of the heat that it generates. Thanks!
  6. This is why I asked. I am very happy with my 550b, but a guy at the range is thinking of going to a 1050 from his 650. I told him I was interested in his 650 and casefeeder if he moves up. Dennis
  7. I have been reloading on a 550B for about 18 months. I have done about 10k in that time between 9mm and 38spec. I was wondering what kind of numbers others are doing. Thanks! Dennis
  8. If I may ask, what did she do to get the DQ? -Dennis
  9. For my load, TG fills the 9mm case about halfway. A double charge, while not overflowing, is very obvious. I have loaded TG in 38 Special and that can easily triple charge. I worked an extra weekend to come up with the cash to go. They changed the match hotel and it is @ $20 more a night that the other place.
  10. I had a chance to chrono my IDPA load in preparation for next weeks Indoor Nationals at Smith and Wesson. I kept 30 rounds outside in the car(high 20's-low 30's) just to see if TiteGroup is temp sensitive. I kept 20 rounds in my pocket for 2 hours also. Here are my results from my stock Glock 34.... 147 Berry's RN 3.4 TiteGroup 1.15" OAL Fed 100 Small Pistol Primers Asst range pickup brass Range temp(50ish) 30 rounds from the bench Avg:924.9, 135.9 PF Hi: 945 Low: 890 ES:55 Std Dev:12.52 20 rounds that I kept in my pocket Avg: 927.45, 136.3PF Hi: 948 Low: 910 ES:38 Std Dev:11.4 30 Rounds from outside Avg:916.87, 134.7PF Hi: 931 Low: 888 ES: 43 Std Dev:10.58 For kicks I shot 30 from my Glock 17 Avg: 902.47 132.6PF Hi: 933 Low: 870 ES: 63 Std Dev:14.86 I hope this helps someone out. Lord knows I have gotten a lot of info off of this board.
  11. Greetings from a fellow Greenwich person! Grew up in Cos Cob. I am also a member at CCRRC. There are a few members of CCRRC on this board. I shoot on Monday nights where they do some of everything, USPSA, Steel and once in a great while IDPA. Show up on a Monday and talk to the ROs and they will be more than happy to walk you through. DO NOT be intimidated by the guys that sound like they shoot full-auto. Everyone there is more than happy to talk guns, equipment or anything else for that matter. It is a good group! -Dennis
  12. Good to know! I would like to try their 158gr 38spec but I guess I will have to get a taper crimp die. The Dillon die I have is a roll crimp.
  13. Forgive my newbie-ness from the BBI website... The roll crimp die will cut through the bullet coating. The Lee Factory Taper Crimp "U" Die will undersize the bullets causing accuracy and fouling problems. I have a Dillon 550 set-up with the Lee 4 die set, which includes the factory crimp die. I would like to try the 9mm 147gr 100 pack and see how they work, but what crimp die would I need get? Thanks!
