  1. Migratory bird and other hunting laws restrict shotgun capacity to 2+1, so any gun that in any way might get used for hunting usually ships with a "plug" to limit capacity accordingly.
  2. I'm obviously biased, but the PMAG21s are all I run. With fast slide speeds and dusty range bays, I hedge my bets by lightly lubricating the inside of all the mags before putting them into service, and then about once every six months or so, but they're easy to take apart, so it's not a big deal. Not really sure if its really necessary. I'm not that nice to my carry and testing ones. I certainly can't tell any difference in reliability between them and any 17rd factory with a basepad--they run like tops. I've yet to have a stoppage that wasn't ammo related. They don't really like steel cased ammo if that's a factor for you, but they work great, drop free, and are under $20.
  3. I've had an SLP for six or seven years, and I'm finally breaking down and getting a 1301. The SLP can take some tweaking. Mine runs 100% on 2-3/4 dram or more 1-1/8oz, and runs on 3d 1oz when it's clean.With a light spring and the clays piston, I know guys that got them to run great on light 1oz all day, though. Functionally, it hasn't failed me in a long time. I have to keep the gas system wet with a thin lube like lucas CLP or Brownells CLP, but it runs like a champ. I like that it's an uncomplicated set of controls. It was fine back when we all stuffed shells one at a time holding four in the weak hand. It was/is OK for twins. But, the forend is so fat, and can't be thinned beyond a certain amount, that no matter how much time I put in and how open the port is, I hang up a lot on the forend loading quads, and I can stuff quads into a benelli or beretta without the same issues. My frustrations with this shotgun have honestly kept me from shooting as much 3-gun as I should, and I've been too lazy to buy a new shotgun. So, I have a 1301 on the way, I'll either sell the SLP or let one of the kids use it (they can't hold quads anyway!), and we will see what we get. I have an A400 extrema for birds, and I like it a lot, plus I've shot a few opened up 1301 comps that I liked, so that's what pushed me to try the 1301. If I don't like it, I'll probably give in to my benelli friends, who will relentlessly mock me for not listening to them in the first place.

If you want to compete, call up Jim Finch at Longhunters and order a pair of SASS .357s with his action work, get some 105gr bad man bullets, load them to about 800fps in .38 brass, grab a codymatic '73 or get one from Jim, and grab a johnny meadows baikal for SG, unless you want to buy 2 or 3 '97 clones so you always have one that runs. If you like four clicks better than the ruger durability, look at Taylor's branded ubertis, and Jim can hook those up for you too...just buy from him to avoid hassle. Really, Rugers can be run out of the box, but all of the Italian clones need cleaned up a bit inside and lighter springs or they'll eat themselves alive. So you do it, or he does it, and he will ream the forcing cone and adjust timing, too. I love real Colts, but I just can't bring myself to beat them shooting CAS.
  5. I was a pretty experienced reloader when I stepped into Dillon stuff after I got my first real job. Struggled with lee before that on college student money. I spent a lot of time reading which to get on Brian's guide. I eventually decided on a 550b for cost of caliber changes and the recommendations of Brian. I wanted to do a bunch of different calipers. It served me well, and I still have it, and use it. I leave it set up with LG primer system and do .45 colt, .308 DMR ammo, and an occasional .45 ACP. The 550 is WAY easier for load development if you are messing with different variables, at least to me, and you can be running a completely different caliber in a few minutes. BUT, if you are talking about larger volumes of pistol ammo, the 650 is the way to go unless you are dedicated to a single caliber and have the cash for a 1050. I added a 650 to my bench a few years ago, and it is awesome. I'm a lot faster on it with the case feeder setup, and it's hassle free. It's a bit more finicky when setting up, and caliber changes are a good deal slower, but when you're cranking, it goes really fast. The 550 was never really fast enough for bulk ammo for my taste.
  6. We don't call it compatible with .300blk because there is so much variability in bullet profile and how that affects function, but if you can load them in, generally they fire just fine. Laying the drum on its back while loading .300blk helps. And yes, works on the tavor, but no free lunch...it's a little like cradling a kid size football. But...the muzzle feels super light. :-)
  7. I really wanted to like the strike eagle, and for the price, it's good. But, as the others say, comparing it to the gen2 razor isn't really even fair. The eye box on the razor is far more forgiving, the glass is way better, too. Even with correctly set ocular focus, at the edges of the eyebox, some reticle doubling in the strike eagle may appear. The reticle in the strike eagle is more coarse than the fine substensions in the older viper pst's, but now might be too coarse...or at least might be better if the center/200yd intersection was differentiated better from the rest of the substension marks. Everything being the same thickness overpowers even the natural centering effect of the outer circle for me, and it's just "busy". The center dot of the razor is faster to me at close to intermediate ranges, and faster to find your hold at longer ranges, at least for me. It also screws with my head that the power ring works backwards on the strike eagle. All that being said, I think this is a comparison of a good low end optic and one of the best made, so it's kind of apples and oranges. You could do far worse for a budget optic than the strike eagle, but it's not in the same league as the razor at all. Whether those differences matter to you is up to you, though. I have 3 gen2 razors and one strike eagle. I'm probably going to relegate the strike eagle to a .300blk fun/pest control rifle, and I'm trying to justify buying another razor, for what that's worth, although I may look at a leupy mk6/w CMRW to give that a try.

If you want to geek out, what we are really talking about is an application of Force to the steel, so you can play with mv/t, but there's a torque component based on distance from the axis of rotation in the case of a popper, etc., blah. I think that in reality, the imperfect nature of the energy transfer means that the math is only useful in being predictive when talking about changing a single variable, e.g., bullets of same weight, same construction, with a velocity difference, and not always. I believe that if a guy wanted to really hash this out, it would take a high speed camera with a 90 degree view of the impact face, with a perfectly controlled impact point on a perfectly smooth popper face and a graduated background to determine the movement and velocity imparted to the popper. Having watched a few impacts on high speed, I think we'd find that even at identical momentums, bullet weight is a factor, but I'd bet that bullet construction and shape are, too, and it all relates to how much of that momentum gets truly transferred to the steel, and how much is lost radially from the impact point as the bullet breaks up. It also might prove out that the heavier bullets are transferring more force to the plate in part because the greater sectional density and slower velocity means that bullet fragmentation happens over a longer time, and that a more solidly constructed bullet (fmj) might transfer more force to the plate as the force required to fragment the bullet would be higher , keeping the bullet intact a few microseconds longer to allow for more transfer of energy, and when talking about steel, HP may actually transfer less energy since they come apart easier. This is just theory-- I'm not pretending that this is the definitive answer. I just think that the dynamics of the impact and energy transfer have a lot to do with various bullet performance on steel, and it might be worth setting something up to look at it.
  9. And on availability, they have been cranking them out as fast as possible since last fall when they started shipping. Demand is just really high, so they don't stick around long. Cabelas had them in stock earlier today if anyone is looking. Working on more capacity to meet demand.
  10. What you experienced is from using the loading lever when unloading. There is a warning in the instructions about making sure the loading lever is in the stowed position when stripping rounds off to unload. You just strip the rounds off like you would a normal mag. No messing around with the lever, and it works 100%. When you lift the lever, it locks the follower stack of dummy rounds in place. Then, if you shake out some rounds, it creates a gap. If the lever is then stowed, it releases the follower stack, and slams it into the bottom of the remaining rounds with considerable force. It's a crazy strong spring. The other bad thing that can happen is that if you try to use the loading lever and shake the rounds out, the rounds will become dislodged from the track, and make a jumbled mess inside the drum, and jam it up hard. Follow the instructions, though, and it's easy sailing. Just always make sure the loading lever is completely down before stripping rounds off. It can't cause problems when shooting, because the lever can't be lifted up high enough to interfere with the feeding cycle when it's in the mag well. I used mine at the TX3G last weekend, and I have about 2k rounds through the 3 drums that I have.

Bye. If those are your reasons, you don't understand appendix carry. You allow big guys with love handles to carry strong side, yes? They are pointing the gun at their femorals, too--just has a little extra meat to go through to get there. Fingers can get in the way no matter where you carry if you dont pay attention...so you just pay attention. I think you'll find that folks are much more conscientious about reholstering when their junk is in the neighborhood. An appendix draw also doesn't break the 180 or flag the shooter ever if done from a proper holster and the shooter isn't built like a weeble.
  12. Yeah...why would you want to allow anything that useful into a sport that's supposed to be based on defensive handgun use? There's nothing unsafe about it, and not being able to shoot from where I carry means that I, and a LOT of other folks will not do the whole IDPA thing-even though there are many appealing aspects.
  13. Larry has it pegged...the 2nd dot is as much of a close range reference as it is a long range. The second dot will probably come into play at 15-20yds depending on zero, but this one will vary and need to be verified with your load and zero--The angle at which bullet path and LOS are converging is more variable at this distance with typical zeros. This avoids arbitrary holdover for those pesky close range head shots, etc. Even if you're not shooting out to 500, the second dot gives you a reference for your holdover distances between your zero and 500. It does work best with a magnifier, but I find it very useful even without. And, actually, EoTech didn't come up with it...Brownells came up with the reticle for a partnered product with EoTech. We've got a lot of things like this in the works...taking staff experience and customer feedback to create new products and applications with a purpose. Duane

Travis, Sent a Q on the ironman homepage, but haven't received word yet...I'm looking at taking the sponsor spot for Brownells since Larry can't attend, but I would like to know if I can shoot 5.45x39 and meet mins or if not, if 7.62x39 is considered heavy. All I saw was categorization by diameter on the site, so I was looking for some clarification...it wouldn't be the first time reading something wrong. In either cal, it would be hornady ammo with no steel in the projectile.
  15. While early roots may be martial, you can't put anything on a timer and still have it executed in a way that isn't somewhat silly in the real world. Manipulations, trigger control, target to target transitions, getting quick hits, and performing under stress (competitive stress isn't life or death, but it's stress)-- these are the things that 3 gun and other action shooting sports help with. Dumping magazines, exposing yourself to multiple adversaries intentionally, not using cover, compensators/muzzle brakes, game guns in general, target order/precedence, and speed as a primary goal are some of the negatives. Developments, advancements and techniques from each area do feed the other, and as long as you don't treat Shewan like a 3 gun stage, and don't create competitive "habits", action shooting is indeed useful. Scoring systems to make competition more "real" would be a nightmare, as would stage design and keeping folks interested. So it's probably best to appreciate the differences and what we can learn by competing than to try to make it über realistic. Rules and stage design that allow a guy to be competitive with realistic equipment and not abandoning smart fighting techniques, though, are appreciated.
