Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Thanks guys. Holding with my finger didn't work. Finally had to made careful use of water pump pliers at odd angles to hold the back. Did a little cosmetic damage to the nuts/screws, but got the change made. Lots of loctite inside to clean up. Lots. I can understand it, though. Had another holster come apart because the manufacturer didn't use any thread lock at all. I just don't understand why they don't use a nut that I can get a tool into...
  2. Hi. I have the DOH holster, too, and I bought it specifically because I was told you can convert back and forth. Here's the problem I have...when I try to remove the DOH attachment, the backing nuts do not appear to have any way to hold them when you turn the screwdriver...they just spin freely(I initially thought the recess was an allen head slot, but discovered it is just a round recess). It's the lower attachment that are inside the holster (of course!) that are being difficult. Have any of you actually removed the DOH attachment? And if so, how did you hold the backing nut so that it wouldn't just spin when you turned the screwdriver? Maybe I'm just being dull, but it's really frustrating me. Must be the threadlocker fighting with me... Thanks for your help!
  3. Thanks guys. Found the threads by searching on "Texas Star", and will go through those.
  4. OK. So I'm at my second match and we have to shoot a five point steel star (plates on the tip of each point, stationary at start but will spin) through a barrel from essentially our knees. I went through three clips (SS). Pause and wait for the giggling to subside... I got some advice yesterday, and now realize that I should have remembered my physics and shot top first. But I'm throwing it out there. Any other tips on shooting my newest nemesis? I will not let it kick my A$$ again. Thanks in advance.
  5. Howdy and welcome. I'm in Manteca. If you need any info on places to shoot up my way, give a holler.
  6. Welcome! There are regular competitions in Richmond and Castro Valley (Chabot). If you need info, give a holler.
  7. A big howdy from Manteca! I'm pretty new here, too, and to the sport. Just shot the Fun Shoot in Oakdale last weekend, and it fullfilled its promise...fun was had by all. Great people. Down to earth and very helpful. We had about 15 newbies, so a bunch of us being in the "same boat" helped. I know I learned a lot. If you have any questions about ranges, I've been getting info on about all of them...many I didn't even know were there! Welcome, and check out the sticky on "calling your shots". It's been helping me a lot.
  8. That's great to be able to take the penalty if it comes down to that. Shot the 1911 today (not from prone!)...boy do I need to practice, practice, practice.
  9. Thanks guys. Your responses have really helped ease my mind. It sounds like not much prone in either, and I should be able handle what prone does arise, so other (more important) factors will influence my direction.
  10. Hi. I'm just starting out and I'm comparing IDPA to USPSA. I have a bit of a back problem that makes shooting from prone painful. I can do it some, but too much and I'm in bad shape for a while. So, as I'm looking into the two sports, one of the things I'll be looking for is which sport has a tendency to shoot more (or less) from the prone position. I know that this can vary a lot and so I'm wondering what your experiences are with this. If for some odd reason, there has already been discussion of this, please help direct me to it. Thanks in advance!
  11. Sorry I didn't make it to Chabot today. Had to change out a motorcycle battery that died on me. What a royal PITA. Nearly a whole day shot. I read about the class and will have to sign up. If it's OK, Mark, I'll drop on Staurday after next to say hi and see what it's all about. I imagine I can sign up for the next class then. I'm taking my son and his girlfriend up to SacValley tomorrow to shoot some skeet, so I think I'll drop by the match going on there. Looks like a multi gun IDPA. Should be fun to watch. Todd, where do they shoot in Yolo?
  12. Thanks for the info on Oakdale and Chabot. Lived here over 10 years and I didn't know there was a range in Oakdale! I think I'll give them a call and if my practice goes well the next few weeks, I might try out the July newbie shoot. They might just be able to put up with me. . I like to sleep in. I'm going to visit Chabot on Saturday to check things out. Of course, I'll have to shoot the rifle range since I'm there and won't have my 1911 until Monday. I really like the looks of Chabot from the website, and the costs are very reasonable. Glad to hear some feedback from someone who shoots there. I'd rather not repeat what others said, but it wasn't about the shooters, it concerned the staff. Probably just some disgruntled visitors, so I'd rather find out for myself. You know what they say, don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see! Maku mozo (I just googled it and found the translation...I think it applies)
  13. That is pretty cool. I can see the incredulous look on my wife's face already...
  14. Hi. New here, too, but I'm also new to pistols. I'm over in Manteca. Maybe we'll see you at one of the matches. I haven't joined a club yet...I'm looking around and trying to hook up with a sport/group I like. Looking at both IDPA and IPSC/USPSA. What do you shoot? Rob
  15. Hi Shipwreck. Hi Reece. My son and I shoot our rifles at Sacvalley (Sloughouse). Nice place and have met some great people there. It's got a fantastic selection of ranges and clubs that run there. It's a bit far from home, though and getting pricey, but they have a 300 yd public range. I see that the IDPA match wasn't held last weekend, so they should be having it this weekend. I was thinking about making a run down there. They have their IPSC matches on the last Sunday of the month. Missed it last time since we had a graduation and family in from out of town. Richmond is a bit far for me. I work in Morgan Hill and commute over a thousand miles a week, so the closer the better. I was thinking about Chabot, but I've read a few things that were unflattering about it. The fact that you didn't mention it and you're from San Jose makes me scratch my head, too. We haven't been there yet. I was thinking of dropping in Saturday to see the TASC - IPSC match, and check the place out. About the same distance as Sacvalley, though. Anyway, I'm about partway through the "Tips for Newbies" Thread. Fantastic info! A lot to learn...Thanks for saying Hi!
