Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. The recoil impulse in a 9mm AR is quite a bit different than a .223 AR. It’s slower and heavier mainly due to the extra mass of the bolt. A Olympic 9mm bolt is about 6 oz. heavier than a .223 bolt/carrier assembly. I tried a “Miculek” style comp on mine and it didn’t seem to make much difference, but I only shoot 147 grain subsonic loads. Shooting a fast 115 grain bullet would probably help. I have some 90 grain, 9mm bullets around here and might try a warm load with those thru the comp and see what happens. All that being said, I don’t think you could make a 9mm AR ever “feel” the same as a .223 AR.
  2. I’ve had an Olympic 9mm upper for years. I run mine with the Socom Mfg. mag block, which allows the use of unmodified sten mags. The Olympic upper doesn’t require a different hammer, just swap the lower from your .223 gun and go. Mine runs flawlessly with a JP trigger and a full size hammer. The big pluses of the Olympic/Socom system are the cheap ($3 each) 32 round Sten mags, you can use your standard AR lower, and they run great on the cheapest 9mm ammo you can get (Wolf, Brown Bear) . The biggest thing against the Olympic/Socom setup is the different position of the magazine catch. Also, getting the last 10 rounds in the mag without a mag loader is tough. I’ll admit, Olympic had problems with their stuff 10 or 15 years ago, but everything I’ve got from them in the past 5 years has been great. The Olympic rifle that takes Glock mags would be a great way to go. The 32 round Glock mags are fairly cheap, easy to load and the mag release is back in it’s proper position. I run a bi-monthly, high round count, pistol caliber carbine match at my local range and there are a half dozen guys using the Oly/Socom system. Everyone is happy with their reliability and function.
  3. All of us at Colorado Multigun want to thank everyone who attended the match. Also, a HUGE thanks to Kurt, Trapr, Dean, Chuck, Michael and Keith for all your help. Here’s what Mark and I carried around all weekend Bolt gun; Remington 700 in 6.5-06 Ackly Improved, Leupold 6.5x20 LR M1 scope Carbine; 18" JP CTR-02 upper on a Bushmaster lower, Nightforce 5.5x22 NSX scope (WAY overkill on the scope, but it’s the only thing I have with an Illuminated Reticle).
  4. I just received this email from the Asst. Match Director (Zak) UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE CMG staff spent the weekend planning and setting up stages at NRAWC. Currently there are 7 stages planned and being worked. Everything is on track. I hope you're getting excited! There will be four field stages on the NRAWC "front range", two night stages taking place on the 1000-yard berm, and one "mega" stage on the North side of the NRAWC property near where the Sporting Rifle Match takes place. All stages except the night stage involve at least 200 yards of movement; several are closer to 1/2 mile. On one of the field stages there is an optional bonus rifle target at 1200 yards (it can be bypassed without penalty). So run numbers to 1200! Scoring will be elementary, generally consisting of a maximum time and points gained with hits. Rifle hits will be worth more than carbine and pistol hits. We will likely be starting earlier than the originally-planned time on Friday. Stay tuned to the PRTC web site for last-minute details. I will have them set by the end of this week. After Friday, it will be impossible to contact most CMG match staff via email, since we will be on-site at the NRAWC. The best way to get a hold of us for any reason is by phone. (There is cell coverage on about half the NRAWC.) My cell is 970-232-4468. -z
  5. I don't have enough posts to put this in the classified section, and I don't want to get in trouble for posting quantities and prices here. E-mail or PM for more info. Scott
  6. I've got over a ton of ½" AR500 plate that I've used to make my rifle targets. I have extra I'll let go cheap, but shipping will be a killer. Regards Scott
  7. Shawn As far as I'm concerned there is no need for an apology. You guys did damn fine job on the match. Nobody gets it right the first time out, but you guys got the important stuff right. Great facility, Great RO's, Non "Traditional" stages, high round count, hot transitions and FUNctional props. The rain & MUD were beyond your control (I think) and just added to the stages. I'll shoot this match next year........ rain or shine, prize table or not, scored or not. Thanks Shawn, Russell,.Brad, T.J, Trent and all others that made this happen!! Regards Scott
  8. Erik I shot the carbine this year, Mark shot the bolt gun (we switch every year). Accurate barrel life on the 6.5-06 Ackley is about 2000 rounds. It’s about the same as a 7 mag or 6.5-284, but 1/3 of the shots are used for fire forming cases. This years match was pretty easy on the bolt gun barrel. No stage required really rapid shooting (unless you went in the boat!!). The cross country humps were good cooling time for the rifle, but overheated the guy carrying it. Shots on the field courses were about the same as previous years , but total for the match was less due to the cancellation of the side events. The 2 side events (man on man and scramble) were the ones that were tough on the barrels (rapid shooting, little time to cool before you shot again). Scott
  9. Kelly Winning combo Bolt rifle; Rem 700, 26 inch Pac-Nor barrel , 6.5-06 Ackley Improved, Leupold 6.5x20 LR M1 142 matchking and H1000 powder. Carbine; Old Olympic lower, Rock River 16" stainless A3 upper, JP trigger & comp. Leupold 3x9 MR/T M1. 55 grain ballistic tip and Benchmark powder. Scott
  10. Here's a picture of some carnage! I started stage 2 with 24 loaded 30 round mags, there were only 6 full mags left when I finished! The barrel on the bottom is from my carbine after the match. The top barrel is a normal stainless bull for comparison. I kinda like the new color. There are melted bits of plastic (carpet) on the side from the Bianchi barricade and some pretty severe erosion in both chambers of the compensator. It still shot good on Sunday! I'll put it on paper tomorrow before I clean it. Scott
