Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I went with the Young. I had friends that let me borrow both before purchasing. I could not tell a difference between the two. I shot 100 reloads and 100 factory loads. Both functioned flawlessly with the factory ammo, but the JP had 5 FTF with reloads. The friend that let me borrow his JP reloads as well and has not had any problems. The decision was easy for me.
  2. +1 for the Viking Tactics. Just make sure you get a padded version.
  3. I have a 300 blackout upper. It is great. I've never shot a .223/5.56 or 7.62x39. I would definitely recommend PWS uppers.
  4. Sorry to bring up an old thread. But i have some experience with the M223. I'm on my second 1-4x M223. They are ok if you are on a budget. The windage knob on the first one I got failed within 2 range visits. The scope itself was under warranty, but it was very inconvenient not having an optic while they were shipped back and forth. One of the selling points was the turrets. But they have turned out to be a liability. One of my favorite places to shoot is on a very bumpy road. The way my rifle was cased, the elevation knob was pressed and turned 21 clicks without me knowing. It sucks finding that your optic is no longer zeroed the hard way. Rezeroing your rifle every time you shoot because you have no confidence is annoying. I would like the turrets to lock in a similar way to a Vortex. If you are looking for a 1-4x, I'd suggest a Vortex Viper, Burris MTAC, or Burris Tac30. They are a bit more expensive. But you will be happier with one of the other options if you are a gamer. I'm currently looking for an MTAC, but I still plan to use my M223 for a .22 upper once I find an MTAC.
  5. Most definitely they are worth the extra money. I borrowed one last weekend when my optic bit the dust. It took me a stage or two to get familiar with the reticle. But it came in very handy on the shorter stages where headshots were required.
  6. Mossberg is bringing their 930 into the mix as well. Mossberg signed Jerry Miculek recently and I think Benny Hill has been working with Mossberg to get a competition ready 930 to the market. But as stated earlier, most top shooters still use Benellis.
  7. I'm curious myself. I'm mainly interested in the split times of double tap and zombie drills.
  8. I went with a 24 inch barrel for my Mossberg. Mainly because I special ordered a non-ported barrel directly from Mossberg. This is a more expensive option than having your barrel cut down and re-threaded. However, my Mossberg will see double duty as a field gun as well, so I wanted to keep the original barrel for that reason. You might also check which set of rules your local matches follow to help you decide with class you would like to compete. IMGA rules say Tactical class shotguns cannot have a barrel length over 22 inches. My local 3 gun matches use an outlaw system based on USPSA rules. You can have no more than 10 rounds in the shotgun. A +5 round magazine tube is about 1/2 shorter than a 24 inch barrel.
  9. +1 to the mossberg 930. After doing some of the work myself, I have less than $700 wrapped up in my complete shotgun. Another alternative that hasn't been mentioned is the Winchester SX2/SX3. They can be found cheaper than the FN's, but run just as good and are just as easy to upgrade.
  10. I had this same problem when I first started shooting sporting clays. I'm guessing that when you miss, you have no idea where or why you missed. The usual cause, at least in my case, is flinching. Especially after shooting your rifle or pistol then shooting your shotgun. I've worked this into my normal practice. I simulate a hoser stage shooting the rifle or pistol first, then picking up the shotgun. After that drill, I'll shoot the shotgun, then pick up my rifle or pistol for some precision distance shooting.
  11. I currently use peltor sound traps. They have a very low profile and have separate volume adjustment knobs for each ear. When shooting indoors, I double bag with foamies. I found that prolonged use of molded ear plugs and surfires cause me headaches.
  12. I have two options at my disposal. I have several of the molle compatible shell carriers that I use on a blackhawk molle belt and a regular belt. The carriers move around more on a regular belt than they do with my molle belt. But even then, the carriers does not move enough to annoy me. I would recommend them to any shooter.
  13. Another +1 for White Oak. I have one and a buddy has one. Great barrels.
  14. Stumpy, I just ordered a 24" non-porter barrel from Mossberg. It took a little over 7 weeks to get it. Just make sure you speak with Edna Perez. She is top notch and knows all about these barrels. She will also communicate any delays that may come up.
  15. +1 very helpful thread. This thread helped me pick out a new BCG for my 3-gun rifle. Thanks again.
