Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Will it cycle properly with 9 minor
  2. I am being told that the Trubor will shoot standard 9X19 (not major). Is that true? I have a couple of cases at home and could get a ton of practice in. What powder are you using and what grain are you re loading.
  3. Fellas, This is a new post that is a spin off from my "What gun would you buy if money were no object" I have decided on getting one of the STI's from a member of my club who is a dealer. He has in stock right now Matchmaster .38 Super Trubor 9X19 & Super .38 Steelmaster 9X19 Several fellow shooters are telling me that if they were to do it all over again they would go with the 9X19 over the 38 super. This is based on the over all costs of ammo today. I currently shoot 9 and am set up to reload. I also have about 5000 once fired brass. There are other guys that are telling me 38 super is the only way to go as I would have to load to major to shoot USPSA and the 9 is a small shell I will tell you that I shot a friends Matchmaster 38 last night using Fiocchi 129 grain and the gun is very loud. But is dead on accurate and fun to shoot I am thinking about teh Trubor as I like the length and feel of the gun BUT the steelmaster in 9X19 looks awesome with all the slide lightening. Let me know your thoughts
  4. Fellas, Thanks for the input. Based on the deal I can get from the local STI dealer it is a no brainer to get it from him and send it out when i have some extra money. He has some guns in stock and is willing to sell me one at a very god price. In addition, he takes very good care of his customers including primers and other goodies when in stock. I plan to get a feel for the gun and send it out to have some additional work done when I have some extra money. The big question now is which gun and what caliber.- I will post this separately.
  5. I am sold!!! I am going to run out and get the Brazos Custom Pro SX. At only $5,000 this is a bargain. Unfortunately I will need to live out of a tent and eat dog food but i guess its worth it. LOL! I am man enough to admit that my wife would skin me alive. I love the race guns but think I will go with the edge. This way I can get the gun, 4-5 mags, and a new holster without blowing up my budget.
  6. Big Stick-So you are saying that you prefer shooting the race gun to the limited. Just out of curiosity what does a limited gun from SVI run?
  7. Last night I went with my Buddy to the STI dealer and he purchased a new match master in 38 super. It is a work of art. While there I had the opportunity to sit and handle the STI Edge for a good hour. This is the exact model I am considering. (not hard chromed) My first reaction was that the pistol feels absolutely great in my hand. A totally different feeling that the CZ or Springfield XD. It is very well balanced and points naturally. The other thing is that the clips slide in and out like butter. Very impressive overall. My second reaction was about the polymer/plastic grip & trigger. Can someone that has the STI give me some feedback about this. I was surprised at how light the material felt. Does it hold up well? Does anyone shoot he Wesson SS? If so I would appreciate feedback. The gun seems somewhat similar to the STI with a bit of a thinner grip and no magwell. The wesson would need immediate work to lighten the trigger and slide- but i can get this gun knew for around $1300 which is $500 less than the STI. Is comparing a Wesson to an STI ridiculous if the pistol will be used only for competition? Thanks
  8. I agree with the post about the instructor. I have taken lessons/instruction on several occasions. I have also been working with a buddy who is a very strong shooter. He is helping me overcome my issue of being right handed and left eye dominant. As for practice I am what termed a "range rat" as I am there at least 3-4 times a week practicing. (good thing I reload or I would be bankrupts)
  9. First-I need to change 'Money is no object' to about $3000. I do not think I can go the custom gun smith route as I live in NJ and permits are an absolute pain in the rear. Plus, many of these guys have a huge wait list. For now lets concentrate on factory built.
  10. I do in fact reload so caliber will not be an issue. I want to mention that one of the guys in my club is an STI dealer. This is a big advantage as he has what I am looking for in stock and takes care of any issue. I would not sell the XD as I love the gun. As a matter of fact I used it yesterday in a steel match and saw plenty of jams with other brands but not the XD. The thing eats any type of ammo and never hurts my hand even after 250 rounds.
  11. This could be my last chance to buy something special. Thanks to Uncle Sammy I have some found money that the wife will let me spend and I want either an STI or similar quality pistol. I currently have a Ruger MK III with a red dot site, a CZ 75 SP-01 in 9MM, and a new XD tactical in .40. I have been shooting static and knock down steel and a couple of USPSA style practice matches. A couple of the other shooters have let me try their STI's (Edges and Tru Bores) after the matches and they are just AWESOME feeling pistols. I am trying to decide if I go the Limited route and get the STI Edge in .40 or go all out and get a race gun which would be .38 Super not .9mm Major. (Regardless of which pistol I go with i will never be able to spend this kind of money again unless I am divorced) I know the race gun would put me into the open class where I will be shooting against seasoned shooters but these guys are all pretty cool and love to help novices. The Edge with an additional 3 mags would run me about $2140 The Tru Bore with 3 mags would be $2835 (This is going to cost me a lot of shoes and handbags for the wife to keep her happy) I will tell you 3 other guns I have been researching. Dan Wesson SS in .40, SIg X-5, and the CZ 75 Champion (by buddy has this and it is a great gun but very rare around here) My question is-If you were in the same position what would you get?
  12. What exactly is bore axis? In one of my posts I was told that the H&K & SIG's are a bit more difficult to shoot is USPSA & Steel due to a high bore axis. I looked this up and found a couple of blog entries that state high bore axis causes increased muzzle flip. However no one really explains exactly what this is a measurement of. I would have thought that the full length of a USP Expert and its weight, same for a SIG 220 Match or 226 would result in less flip (.40) that lets say a Glock 35 or XD. Thanks
  13. Fellas, I am somewhat of a newbie so my opinion might not count as much as the more experienced shooters on this site. I currently shoot a cz 75 sp-01 in 9mm for steel. No issues-great pistol. A buddy of mine has been letting me practice with his STI Edge in Super 38 and I am in love with this caliber. In my opinion the recoil is much softer and is more of a push as opposed to a snap. Unfortunately I do not have any details on how he reloads but they feel soft and are a pleasure to shoot. I am sure it does not hurt that that STI Edge is a $1750 competition pistol. I hope this helps By the way I looked at Midways prices for Brass: Starline 9mm per 1000----$141 Starline .38 Super pr 1000----$141 .38 Super bullets are a bit more but not substantial I am told that .38 Super uses small "rifle' primers not pistol. Is this true?

    Glock vs

G-Man-That is a great picture. Is that the M&P on the left? The reason I ask is the barrel on the left looks thicker and like the casing is sitting slightly deeper. Is the amount of exposed casing what they are referring to as unsupported. I am only considering either a .40 for production or single stack. If I go single stack it will be with the Tojan 5.0-he has 9mm, 38 super and .45 If I go production it will be one of the big 3- Glock, XD or M&P. I am leaning toward the XD but will take the time to shoot the M&P and Glock again tonight to be sure. I will try the Glock with a Hogue Grip to see if this helps with the perceived recoil into my hand. Since you have experience with both guns which one do you like better and why? Question- an FFL has an XDM in 9mm. I live in NJ and this gun is not legal due to the capacity. He told me that he can permanently block the magazine to only hold 15. Would that make the gun legal since it is still technically a 19 round magazine. Thanks

    Glock vs

The CZ Tactical looks like a nice gun but it is about $1250. FYI-I have the CZ 75 sp-01 which I love. I am going to have a new site and trigger work done on this gun. A buddy told me I should really consider the EAA Witness Limited. He claims it is the best $1000 limited gun on the market. He mentioned if I like the CZ I would love this pistol. Anyone know anything about this gun?
