Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Go with the load two and don't look back. If you want to put in LOTS of time the week hand load can be done (nearly) as fast but if you want to start shooting and enjoying your shotgun the load two method is the easiest by far. Side note to that, if you buy the good load two stuff and you decide it isn't for you it is very easy to sell as it is the latest and greatest. But seriously most of the upper mid level shooters (the group I claim to belong to...) are going with the load two technique because it is possible to only practice at your local matches and not look like a complete beginner. No matter what, have fun!
  2. Not all of us are masters of trigger control Pat (I go for the closed-eye jerk approach). I did a bit of a trigger job on my supernova just to reduce the 2" of creep but it didn't make me shoot any better. I guess I just need to do another trigger job on it... It isn't too hard to do yourself, you just need to be willing to completely ruin it and have to order replacement parts as with any trigger work just go slow and re-assemble after each step to see when you ruined it. As for the lifter, does yours not lock in the up position when you load? If it doesn't that is what needs to be fixed.
  3. Or go to Carbon Arms for the backbone (or pinwheels) as they are more versatile than some of the other loading options out there, they are worth saving up the little extra money (I'm not biased). What's another $25 bucks... http://www.carbonarm...L-Backbone.html
  4. I just browsed this whole string and am likely just restating but... in an early post there was a line about over gassed. Fix that and polish the chamber= problem solved. If you think about the businesses of adding weight to the reciprocating parts you are adjusting for an over gasssed system (a little Newtonian Physics). I have done that with a couple DPMS 308s with great success. Good luck.
  5. I had the pleasure of shooting through today, it is a great match with very fun stages! I am even jealous of everyone who is shooting it over the weekend, I want to shoot it again! Good luck to all the shooters and a huge Thank you to Mark and the staff for putting together a very good match.
  6. GREAT Find!. I have one of those rifles and love it. I have put about 2000 rounds through mine (give or take) and it still shoots 5/8" It is a really good rifle. The only thing I would suggest and it is not needed is to replace the stock with one that has an aluminum rib or try to stiffen the one you have. When you are shooting off a bi-pod it contacts the barrel (very lightly so it's probably just black cat bones) and might effect accuracy. Mine LOVES 69gr sierras but it is a 1:9 twist so it does really well with anything lighter than that. Enjoy it!
  7. I would STRONGLY recommend putting a small v cut (or similar) in that extension (front edge). You want the center of the lifter to be short of the sides at the front so that if you jam a round in without engaging the catch or the catch hangs on something and a shell pushes back into the front of the lifter it cannot detonate. It is unlikely sure, but well worth having the safety built in. Otherwise it looks good.
  8. Updates on the 3GN webpage after each round wouldn't ruin the show and think of the ad space next to the updates that could be sold. Something better than Mark having to do it would be nice. Thank you to Mark and his inside connection though!
  9. I'll throw in a second on the DPMS. I've had 20 and 24 inch factory guns from them that both gave me 3/4" with hand load or Federal match ammo and 1" with American Eagle. triggers stink but can be replaced with a good cheep Rock River NM two stage for about $110.
  10. The FA 18.5 stainless match barrel is the same price as the cheapest DPMS barrel. Start with that and never look back.
  11. With the 308 (not the 223) the recoil causes the bullet to dimple the front of the mag (espetially if you use hollow points) and after about 400-500 rounds it creates enough drag to start giving nose-down issues. They are still the best mags by far but this is the one draw-back to them. There is a very small rumor (maybe I am starting it now?) that Magpul is working on this but for now it is best to plan to have new mags for big matches. on a different note... If you buy a stock DPMS change the gas block out for an adjustable and polish the chamber and it will shoot VERY well and be as reliable as any other 308. Like any less expensive rifle it just takes a little more patience to break it in and tweak it.
  12. oh yeah... just plan on buying new p-mags every 400-500 rounds for matches and use the old ones for practice or paperweights or something. don't wast you time with anything else.
  13. You can absolutltly get/build a good ar-10 for under $1500. First stay away from the Armalite cut because DPMS parts are cheaper and better... I would recomend getting receivers from Tactical Machining and a barrel from Fulton Armory (they are Criterion barrels which are effectively Kreiger) and most the rest of the parts from DPMS except the trigger which I would get the RRA national match two stage, it's a good trigger and half the money of anybody elses good triggers. DEFINATELY spend the money and get an adjustable gas block (NOT aluminum) because this will alleviate most of the ar-10 reliability concerns people have. Good luck!
  14. Shhh Dan, I was going to make millions on a similar fix. But yeah I think that might do the trick. Just have to be sure the OAL of your load is still good. I am testing a Proof of concept (done with some AL I had) this week sometime.
  15. Hooray, I can say something that might be helpful... DPMS 308s are great, I've had several and I've had this same problem on a couple. EVERY time I have had this it was solved by replacing the gas block. The factory block is very open and the over-pressure causes exactly what Jim said. The give away is the removed case rims (or very stretched on the ones that do extract). That said, polishing the chamber is always a good idea on any rack grade 308 barrel. And all ARs should be run WET! (I know some of the piston guns say otherwise but...)
