Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Comparing this to a typical USPSA match, If we had 4 courses of fire (you call them events?) set up on 4 separate berms or ranges, is it reasonable to plan on running 3-4 squads of 10-12 shooters through all 4 courses of fire in say 4 or 5 hours? We have the room and the equipment to run 2 shooters on each course at the same time and probably want to do that. Our monthly USPSA matches draw 50 - 60 shooters on 5 courses of fire and we get through it all in 5 hours or less, It looks like the AP events I mentioned using will take longer I'm just trying to get a feel for how much. If I read you right, 12-15 minutes per event would mean 4 shooters per hour or 8 if we run 2 at a time? At your AP matches do you run squads on more than 1 range? How many events or courses of fire are typical? Hope I'm not making this more complicated then it needs to be. Thanks,
  2. We're going to run a couple of AP matches this winter at the WCFW range in northern CO. I have some questions regarding match operations that some of you may be able to help with. It looks like we can run Los Alamitos, Practical, Speedload Challenge and Unsupported Standard with out adding any range equipment. Does anyone have clearing times figured out for these, how much time per shooter from start to finish? Do you typically use multiple timers with the par times pre set? How much frustration in having to change the par time for every string like on the Practical? Do you use new targets for each shooter or try to run more than one on a set? Obviously they get shot up a lot more than the usual USPSA match so I'm thinking about having several sets and change them out to score after every shooter. Is anyone using MGM spaced plate racks for the falling plates or does it make too much difference for time? This will be an outdoor match without automated targets holders. Any info is appreciated!
  3. I have an STI Trojan .40 thats run a few thousand rounds without any mis-fires, when it was fairly new I called STI to inquire about the main & recoil springs as it came new, they said 15lb main & 15lb recoil. I changed to a 9lb recoil spring right away and it runs great, I think its soft and has a decent trigger, just under 2lbs. I've used winchester & wolf primers.
  4. I'm planning on it, do you have the range location or link to the range? I'm up for some rocket fuel as well ;-)
  5. Great pics Paul, thanks for posting.
  6. I like this thread! MIG for building your pepper poppers and plate racks. TIG for building your guns. Stick for your gas / oil pipeline.
  7. After reading this thread I decided to give it a try on a 1980s Colt LW Commander that was never fitted correctly. It was long linked from the factory, the lugs never touched a slide stop pin. I used a tig welder with 308 stainless filler rod and made a few practice runs on a piece of 1/8 thick mild steel. With the barrel clamped upside down and starting on the area closest to the barrel, welding towards the breach end of the barrel I came over the top of the link pin hole and watched as the tip of the lug collapsed. Wasn't paying enough attention to heat so I had to let it cool a minute and build that area back up. Should have made a few more practice runs and maybe welded on a sharp corner to better simulate a 1911 barrel lug The lug on the other side was a little smoother and I remembered to let off of the foot pedal amperage control. After welding I cleaned up what I could on a small lathe, then some filing to remove excess material. Then used a Brownells lug cutter to start fitting for the slide stop pin. The stainless build up cuts a little harder I think than what I remember on new barrels so maybe it would hold up for wear. As of right now some of the areas I built up are not cleaning up real nice so before I go any further I'm going to re-weld the spots that are lacking and sort of start over, I have about 5 hours in it so far. The advice from Jim was great, the pin hole would have collapsed real quick without a pin and the wet towel and water can saved what was going to turn in to disaster. Just so you know, I'm not a gunsmith, I used to be a welder. I thought the gun needed a barrel anyway so what's the harm in trying. If I mess it up I go back to plan A (get someone who knows what their doing) but with a little more experience. I'll let you all know how it turns out.
  8. For info regarding NRA Action Pistol go to this area in the forum, Shooting Sports & Travel> Other Shooting Sports> NRA - Bianchi Cup. I haven't shot a "pistol Qualification" but I have shot in an NRA Action Pistol match, Aurora Gun Club is supposed to be doing them but I go to Rawlins WY and shoot their indoor matches occasionally.(I see your in Colorado)
  9. I used the search button, no luck. So before I go to the local steel shop does anyone know where to buy replacement targets for the Texas Star that I believe is the original design. 1/4 or 5/16 thick with two small holes in the tab, Spring loaded latch. Sorry, don't have pic's. Thanks
  10. Sure makes sorting kinda critical, I think it was bad idea, my 2cents.
  11. 180 gr. MG CMJ, 5.2 gr. WST, 170 PF, 1.190 COL, no pressure to speak of. 180 gr. Missouri Cast TC, 4.8 gr. WST, 172 PF, 1.190 COL, no pressure problems. Both loads are real clean, these are both long to run in a Para, won't work in a glock.
