New 9mm Major powder? Win 572!

Hodgdon just released the data on their newest powder, "Winchester 572". Velocities for many loads using .355 bullets are very high, including .380 ACP, 9mmx19, and .357 Sig.

In fact, Hodgdon lists Winchester 572 in 9mm as being the...

- 2nd fastest in 115gr (just behind HS-6, 140 PF)

- Fastest 124gr Berry's bullet (150 PF)

- 2nd fastest in 125 gr HAP (just behind CFE Pistol)

- Fastest 130 gr Berry's bullet (147 PF)

So it looks like 572 may be a valid option for reaching major PF with relatively safe pressures. However, most of the loads show a smaller charge compared to HS-6, so it likely has less gas volume to operate the comps.

Thoughts?

I read the same chatter about it being somewhat of a replacement for SR4756.

SR4756 was a top 3 favorite powder for me in 38super - the only real down side to it was that it was bulky and filled the 38 super case, and it was getting expensive.

Lots of unknowns about it at the moment and I'm not sure what its bulk density is, what region it occupies in the burn charts, etc. Comparing data on the mfg's webpage it seems like it is faster than SR4756, also it is a ball powder (just noticed that on the label) and not a flake...but ???

If i see it locally (for a reasonable price) I'll buy a pound just to check it out.

Looking forward to giving it a try as soon as I can find some locally. Hoping it's closer to the old 571/HS7---and I've seen

a few references on other sites stating it may be a bit slower than HS7. That gets it into 3N38/N105 country, with a denser

powder.

Finally got my hands on a couple of pounds of 572. I'll get some major 9 test loads ready tomorrow and chrono them Saturday.

So far---it's not as dense as HS6. A full 9mm case of 572 ran 10.8-11 gr. HS6 is around 12.5.

I think I'll start around 7.0 with a 124 at 1.180 and see what I get. REALLY hoping it acts like the old HS7. I've heard the

burn rate is slower than HS7----

Obviously being a ball powder, it can't exactly duplicate SR4756, a flake powder. But in many calibers and loads, comparing Hodgdon.com load data, it comes very close. It does appear to be a denser powder, so it should fill less of your case, so no compressed charges and less spilled powder.

In 38 Super, it seems to act more like CFE Pistol, in .40 S&W it seems to act more like WSF. In 9m, it's performance by weight is nearly equal to SR4756, but with a higher max charge.

Anyway, it's an interesting powder for a purely gun geeky perspective, but Chris Hodgdon does state that it's a pseudo replacement for SR4756...

(Also in the video Christ talks about the changes in production to Clays/Universal/International, and which powders the IMR Enduron series is meant to clone...)

First round of trial loads with 572. Just a dozen of each.

Gun is a full size open gun, KKM barrel with two .156 ports, Bedell comp.

1.175 OAL and WSP for all, mixed brass. Bullets are Precision Delta JHP's

My regular load is 8.8 HS6 with a 115 gr, runs 172-173 PF

115 gr, 7.5 gr 572, PF 163

124 gr, 7.0 gr 572, PF 155

I'll focus on the 124's for the next round, probably 7.3, 7.5, 7.7.

How did the 115s feel?

Not bad. Only fired 12 (4 sets of 3), but the dot tracked well and it didn't feel quite as snappy as CFE or Autocomp.

Probably try 7.8 with the 115's next time around.

That would be awesome.
