Rio Salado: Practical Long-Gun Matches In July - NEW MATCHES

Recommended Posts

Here are the practical long-gun events we have scheduled this month at Rio Salado:

SPECIAL EVENT: Pistol Caliber ANYTHING: Monday July 4th (INDEPENDENCE DAY)

Celebrate our independence with a blast – bring out any handgun, pistol caliber carbine or submachine gun and enjoy this all-steel action shooting match. The general format will be very similar to Tuesday Night Steel, but with additional options and challenges that will allow participants with all gun types – handgun, PCC or SMG – to compete equitably and have a great time.

There will be five run-n-gun stages requiring approximately 150 rounds total.

- GUNS: Any pistol caliber firearm (handgun, pistol caliber carbine or submachine gun). Handguns require holsters.

- CALIBERS: 9mm Parabellum, .357, .38, .40 S&W, 10mm Auto or .45 ACP only. No other calibers allowed (sorry - no rimfires, no rifle cartridges, nothing smaller than .355 caliber, maximum muzzle velocity 1600fps… if in doubt, ASK).

- RULES: TNS conduct and scoring rules. There will be separate divisions for Open Handgun, Limited Handgun, Sore Back (Prod/SS/L10/CO/Revo), semi-auto Pistol Caliber Carbine, and full-auto Submachine Gun (SMGs must be fired full-auto only).

First shots at 7am. Match fees are $15 members, $17 non-members. No pre-registration required… just turn up and shoot.

3-Gun (Multi-Gun) Match: Saturday July 9th - PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Sign-in on Saturday runs 7am-8am, with first shots at 7am. New shooters should come in time to attend the New Shooter Orientation at 7:30am before they shoot. To get a feel for what to expect, check out these videos from our previous matches. Our usual format is 3 short-range rifle, shotgun and/or pistol stages, plus 1 long-range rifle stage. Bring 150 rounds of rifle ammo, 50 shotgun birdshot (#6 or smaller), and 50 rounds of pistol ammo.

To facilitate efficient shooter registration, we want everyone to pre-register for the match. Online registration will open at 3pm on Tuesday July 5th at the Practiscore website. When you arrive on match day, come to the stat shack and pay your match fee as usual, then simply go and shoot - your info will already be in the iPads. Even if you are not 100% sure of making it, it is better to pre-register. Those who do not pre-register will have to wait at the back of the line until everyone else who did pre-register is processed.

We are fortunate to have THREE very generous sponsors for our monthly match: Carbon Arms sponsors one of the shotgun stages, provides "loaner" shotshell caddies for competitors to try, and they donate a $100 gift certificate. VLTOR sponsors a CQB rifle stage, and they donate TWO of their excellent AR15 rifle stocks. LUTH-AR sponsors a long-range rifle stage, and they donate one of their fine MBA-series rifle stocks. All prizes are distributed by random draw from the list of competitor who finish the match. With typical attendance around 75 shooters, your odds of winning something nice are pretty good.

Tactical .22 Rifle Match: Tuesday July 12th & 26th

Registration opens at 4pm, with first shots shortly thereafter. Location is the Smallbore Range right behind the Activity Center. The rules are simple: it's a straight time match with penalties for misses. Pretty much any .22 rifle is OK - the most popular guns are AR15-clones and Ruger 10/22s. We have two divisions: iron sight and optical sight. Our typical match format is one "long range" stage out to 100yards, and two or three shorter range hoser stages. Check out
and this Dillon Blue Press article for a flavor of what we do. This match is more fun than a barrel of monkeys... bring a bulk pack of cheap ammo (if you can find any) and you will leave with a smile a mile wide.

Tactical Shotgun and Pistol Caliber Carbine Match: Thursday July 21st

Registration starts at 4pm, with a new shooter orientation shortly thereafter. The match format is four practical scenario-based stages similar to what you would encounter at a 3-Gun match, except that you only need to bring one gun - you choose either shotgun or pistol caliber carbine. There will be separate divisions for shotgun (Open, Limited and Pump), centerfire carbine (Optic and Iron) and .22 rimfire carbine (Optic and Iron). Any tactical shotgun suitable for 3-gun competition will work well in this match, or you can shoot a pistol caliber carbine (straight walled pistol calibers only please) or even a .22LR rifle. Check out the match rules for more details.

Red Mountain Action Rifle Match: Sunday July 17th

Registration opens at 12:30pm. This is a rifle-only match run over the same course of fire as the morning pistol match; maximum 60 yards, high-speed/low-drag, four run-n-gun stages. To see what a typical match setup looks like, view
. The equipment divisions accommodate iron and optical sights, rimfire rifle, centerfire rifle and pistol caliber carbine. Bring 150 rounds of ammo and a quick set of legs.

NEW: UPPL Steel Challenge: Saturday July 23rd

Sign-in 7am-8am, with first shots at 7am. Each month the UPPL crew select four of the eight Steel Challenge stages. The emphasis of this match is speed, with little or no movement. While it is primarily a handgun discipline, the UPPL match also recognizes several rifle divisions: Open Rimfire Rifle, Limited Rimfire Rifle, Open Pistol Caliber Carbine and Limited Pistol Caliber Carbine. I ran my PCC in the June match and had a ball... video below. Pre-registration via PractiScore is required after 3pm on the preceding Tuesday. If you fancy trying something new with your rimfire rifle or PCC, come and check it out.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Format TBD: Saturday July 30th & Sunday July 31st

We have this weekend reserved for action long-gun matches, but have not finalized the format... likely will be Pistol-Rifle at least one day, but we are feeling indecisive. If you have a specific suggestion, post it here.

Thanks to everyone who participated in today's 3-Gun match - we had an awesome turnout for a hot July Saturday. The results are available on PractiScore. Here is the match video:

The winners of this month's sponsor prize draw are as follows:

Carbon Arms $100 Certificate: Kimi D

VLTOR Stock Kits: Nick V & Dan S

LUTH-AR Stock: David B

We are blessed to have such awesome sponsors for a local monthly match - please be sure to consider them when you are looking at upgrading your competition kit.

The next match to plan for is the Tactical Shotgun/Pistol Caliber Carbine match on Thursday (7/21)... first shots at 4pm.

Lastly, we have decided on the format for the matches on July 30th & 31st. On Saturday 7/30 we will run another Pistol Caliber ANYTHING match (bring your choice of a handgun, PCC or subgun). On Sunday 7/31 we will run a rifle-pistol match. Both should be a lot of fun - mark your diary accordingly.

Thanks, Richard.

I shot the PCC anything match on the 4th with my AR-9 and it was a Hoot! Looking forward to the 30th. It's about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on.

  • 3 weeks later...

REMINDER: We have a busy weekend ahead.

On Saturday (7/30) we will be repeating the successful Pistol Caliber ANYTHING match format with some fun all-steel action. Bring out your handgun, pistol caliber carbine or submachine gun and have a blast.
On Sunday (7/31) we will host a Run-n-Gun Rifle-Pistol match. Each of the stages will require both a centerfire semi-auto rifle and a pistol. This match is great for scattergun-phobes - NO SHOTGUN REQUIRED. We have designed the stages to be fun and challenging, but also to flow quickly so we can avoid the worst of the heat.
No need to pre-register for either match... just turn up during the registration window (7-8:30am), pay your $$$ and shoot. We hope to see you there.
