Bob Krieger patented the Acc-u-Rail System in 1984.

From what I've been told, Bob licensed everything to Doug Jones when he retired.  Doug operates out of the same shop where Mr. Krieger operated and has all of the fixtures and tooling for installing the system.  So, unless Doug was willing to license the approach to another smith, I think we're limited on who can install them or fit new slides and rails.  I believe Mr. Krieger also allowed Tim Brian http://www.ctbrian.com/Limited.html to install the system, but I don't believe he does it as a separate service (only on full builds).

I'd assume the patent would have expired by now.

Probably true.  I think the longest patents last for 20 years.  I imagine it's more a matter of a gentleman's agreement among the few smiths trained by Bob to not spread the techniques/tooling until they retire and others to not infringe on their turf.

I believe Joe Cominolli also did Accu-rails, or maybe something very similar.  The rails themselves are just hard rods that are bent at one end to hold them in place.  They should be pretty simple to duplicate.  The downside to Accu-rail is when they do it, they hog out the frame and slide, so the gun is useless without the rails.  I never understood that part.  Why not just keep the slide to frame fit and add the rails?
