Does 105 fill the case up like 3n38 ? When I load 3n38 theirs not much room left in the case. For example when my 650 indexes a few sprinkles come out of the case if I don't slow down a little. I noticed with hs6 this didn't happen as much but I was at a starting point of 8.6 I believe.

Yes.

If I were to run a 38 as opposed to 9MAJOR, powder cost would be the least of my worries.

True!  but there is a significant price delta between 3N38 and HS6.  Lower the cost of each round=more practice time.

4756 works very well, unfortunately, like the Australian Clays, it's now unavailable unless you run across someone who has a stockpile of it they are willing to part with.  I understand that 572 is supposed to be similiar to 4756.

I'd like to find some of this but it's highly unlikely

you can tune the 650 so that no powder spills. I have gone up as high as 10.4gn of 3N38 in 38 super with no powder spill and no need to slow down.

the key is:

roller bearing with a washer on top under the shell plate bolt head

cut 1/2 coil from detent ball spring

use delrin detent ball

spend time tuning the shell plate bolt tension to be juuuuust right. it does take 5-10 min to get a shell plate that still moves freely but has no jerk when indexing.

yes N105 fills the case too. it's a good thing. :)

  • 1 month later...

I shoot 124-125 grain jhps in .38 Supercomp, and 9 major.

I started with N350, but, a friend of mine insisted N105 was better. I tried N105, and couldn't notice any difference while shooting, but, loading N105, I had to put my finger over the case between the powder station, and bullet seating station because it was level with the top of the case.

When I couldn't get N350, I tried IMR 4756. Almost as clean and soft, but, I found that every lot number seems to chrono different, so, if you find that you like it, buy the biggest can you can find!

For 9 major, I like Autocomp a little better than N350, but, will use either. Can't get enough 4756 in a 9mm case to even get my guns to cycle.  I refuse to use HS-6 because I'm too lazy to clean my gun every time I shoot it, and it's filthy stuff.

Also, depending on the configuration of your gun, it may react completely different than someone else's.

4756 is awesome but very hard to find since it has been discontinued. Vit 3N38 is a little cleaner and makes lots of gas!

I was just at my local "Fleet Farm" which hasn't had much powder during the Obamaha rule, and they are stocking 4756

Hi, I've been loading VV N350 for several years now with no complaints or issues.  My 38 SC load is a 121 gr JHP atop 8.3 gr. with OAL at about 1.245 and standard primers.  This load gives a PF of about 172 in a full size gun, 5.4 barrel with four popple holes and Cheely TI. comp.. I've tried my friend 3N38 load I thought it felt harsh but loads like the guns feel subjective from person to person.  The point is that most of these powders work well so experiment and decide what feels good to You with Your set up. Also, I like the fact that their is enough case space with this powder and no spillage issues no matter the loading speed.

Same here.

Just started using 3N38 because of the cost.  Definitively think N105 tracks better.

Is there a reason that N105 is not available in 4 pound packages?

I have been using Ramshot Silhouette since  it was all I could find during the powder shortage. 9gr Delta Precision 115 JHP Winchester SPMP. Works very well. Only drawback is it is dirty. Well we should clean open gun frequently anyway. I had 4 pounds of N105 in stock which I loaded up 100. Very messy to load and poor ejection. I am shooting it up in practice 9x25 loads.
