Wow. What type of gun are you running? For open, I have never seen anything under 7.8 grains.

BiggMike, he was talking about using WAC (Winchester Auto Comp) powder

with a 124 gr MG JHP  ....   not  talking about HS6.

My bad...I misunderstood his post.

All the powders recommended are good and work well. You need to get what is mostly available to you at the best price. I tried WAC, CFE Pistol, and Silhouette. They all worked good and I am using WAC at the moment due to availability. HS6 is available, but not pheasable due to cost. I may get around to trying it out.

I use 3n38  8.8 Gr 124 Berry round nose 1.170.

Currently testing silhouette.   7.9 gr Berry round nose 1.160.

I published more load data on oil in the Reloading forum.

8.8 sounds like an awfully high charge weight with a 124gr. 8 Gr makes 176pf in my gun with 124mg Jhp     **Edited** im going off memory here so maybe im wrong on my charge weight and PF. I'll have to check my notes and confirm. DISREGARD for now.

(this is another reason why it is important to use a chrono and work up your own load to confirm PF)

Anybody tried Win 572?

Yeah I've been using it for about a year now (when I started shooting open) and I think it works well though I really haven't tried anything else besides doing a work up of HS-6 which I didn't like. I'm thinking about trying Silhouette when I run out of my last 8# keg.

My load is 7.3gn 572, WSP, 124gn MG JHP, 1.165 OAL which makes 172 PF.

Thanks for the info! I have some 4756 to try which I believe is the same as Win 572

I really liked SR4756 in 38super and was a little bummed when they stopped making it.  I read that Chris Hodgdon said something about ww572 being a replacement for it, and I got a pound of ww572 to try but right off the bat they are obviously different  - one is a flake, the other a ball and the density is quite different.   I haven't developed any loads with ww572 yet but physically it looks a lot like the silhouette/HS-6/WAC/CFE family of powders.  When I get off my PCC kick and get back into open I was going to work up a load and compare to similar 38 super rounds loaded with SR4756.

What's your .38 load with 4756 if you don't mind me asking?

I know we digress but here it is-->> 38 Super  - SR4756 at 8.3gr, MG 124gr JHP, OAL 1.235", CCI SPP or Win/Tula SRP = 167pf out of three port 5.4" barrel.

Note that SR4756 is a shotgun powder and varies a bit from lot to lot in pistols.  This is from the last lot I had, not sure what that lot number is now as I loaded it all up.
