rbuck
Any good pistol powders but HS-6? Using for USPSA open division.
Hi-Power Jack
Winchester Auto Comp (WAC) is a favorite, along with HS6. Those are the only two powders I've used for ten years. Really there isn't any Best Powder - but many others are also very good.

kneelingatlas
All your 9 major questions answered: There could be a number of reasons you make 175pf at 8.3gr while your friends use 8.9gr: - different lot numbers (I've read about some hot lots of HS-6, maybe you have one) - shorter OAL (it's not a big difference, but generally speaking the shorter you load, the higher the velocity) - barrel wear (as barrels wear they tend to leak more gas around the bullet, producing less velocity) - different brands of bullets (the friction characteristics vary from brand to brand, Montana Gold seem to be about the slowest) - do their pistols have ports in their barrels or shorter barrels? (both tend to lower velocity) Edited May 29, 2017 by kneelingatlas
orangeman711
I've used HS-6, VV-n350, and am currently using WAC. All good powders. HS-6 is the dirtyest of the three and VV-n350 the cleanest.

ckfarris
Does using a small pistol magnum or small rifle primer affect the burn cleanliness as opposed to a standard small pistol primer? I use Hs6 in my 38sc and dont find it all that particularly dirty. I do have 4# of 3n38 to try out after my Hs6 is gone. Steve RA
I don't think it affects the cleanliness as much as providing "tougher" primer cups to resist the higher pressures of Major loads.
