Chriswakey
I'm looking at mounting a red dot to my Versamax and have seen them mounted on the rib or on the receiver also on a bracket between the stock and receiver. Is there a general view on where is best? Or is it just down to personal preference?
RiggerJJ
I prefer close to my eye to have a bigger window to look thru, so I mount the dot as close as I can.
iamspartacus
I suggest using the burris speed bead mount. It puts the dot close to your eye.

StealthyBlagga
I mounted mine on the OEM Picatinny rail, but am not thrilled with this solution - I have to use a riser cheekpiece on the stock to get my eye behind the optic, plus the rail shakes loose over time (likely from slow deformation of the threads in the aluminum receiver). I have a friend who adapted the Benelli version of the SpeedBead to fit his Versa Max - apparently it just took some filing on the mount where it sandwiches between stock and receiver. ETA: it looks like Burris offers a mount for the Versa Max now: LINK A rib mount is a very popular solution, and the sight travels with the barrel making the gun a bit more flexible in configuration, but this approach does require gunsmithing and - as JJ indicated - does make for a smaller field of view.
