who makes a cylinder style thumb rest?

Go to any engineer and tell them you need some aluminium round stock milled to whatever OD you want with an ID to match the screws, and get yourself a long screw. Keep in mind though that this type of rest will will cause a large amount of lateral force on the screw/thread.

life would be easier if i could just buy one off the shelf. :)

Anything worth having is worth working for mate. I'm designed my own mag release, trigger inserts, all because the stuff that is "off the shelf" is built for the masses and not designed for me. Now I have stuff that is perfect for me, rather than getting used to something that is close.
