rootacres
I was wonder with the exact same loading specs (charge, OAL, primer etc.) would a coated lead bullet have greater velocity than a FMJ or vice versa. For example SNS coated vs Xtreme. Thanks in advance.
superdude
lead (coated or plain) bullets generally run faster than jacketed (or plated) under those conditions. This means you can usually use a little less powder with the lead bullets to reach the same velocity as jacketed (plated) bullets.
js1130146
In my (limited)experience coated is faster. I dropped my powder charge weight by half a grain to achieve similar velocity after switching from plated to coated in .45 ACP.
bowenbuilt
With coated lead being the fastest you will see between 20 and 50 FPS difference between coated, plated and jacketed.
Hi-Power Jack
I'd avoid generalities, but if you have a nice jacketed load and you want to try the same load with lead bullets, I'd back off the powder charge and work up with a chrono, or you could get a nasty surprise. Prerunnertrd
Coated runs faster from my experience
zzt
Some of the proprietary coating formulas, such as Falcoating, run fastest. Next comes lubed lead, followed by Hi-Tek coated bullets. Dead soft lead plated bullets come next, followed by hard lead plated bullets. Jacketed bullets are slower; however, the Hornady HAP may be quicker than plated. I'm about to test them out. Added later: all of this testing was done in my CZ TS 40 (major loads) and a custom 1911 5" 45 (major and minor) Edited April 13, 2017 by zzt
