Prima V batch 16055 and CZ barrels.

Recommended Posts

All 10 of my bottles are the newer, slower batch.

I've chronoed 30 rnds out of my SP-01 and they averaged 842 FPS.

3.2 PV 147 Xtrme @ 1.135".

I was able to get quite a bit more velocity out of my Tanfo Lim Pro but the CZ isn't as fast. I'm gonna try 3.4 and 3.5 and see if that gets me 890 average.

Anyone working with the 16055 batch and CZ barrels?

All I know is that around here when I see "PV" I think Powder Valley, not Nobel Sport Prima V.

;)

Title edited.

Thanks.

That's very weird.

You are using a coated bullet and I'm using a plated but you're average is 50 FPS faster.  What was what I was getting with my Tanfo.

I chroned these over two different days. I stood 10' from the chrono and the sky was overcast on both days.

Got the exact same velocities (averages) on both days.

Now im starting to think maybe I didn't do something right?

I'm gonna try these again. Gonna use my RCBS chargemaster to dispense exactly 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and see what I get.

If I remember correctly, these 147s get seated pretty deep, 1.070-1.080

Shot 20 rnds today out of SP-01.

147 gr Xtrme. 3.3 gr Prima V. Win primers. OAL was 1.130"

Lowest was 865 fps.

Average was around 878 and SD was 11.

I accidentally hit delete string before writing the info down but I do remember the LO and SD.

I measured all 20 rnds after loading. The shortest was 1.122" and the longest was 1.139". That's a little more than I want. I was loading on my 650.

Gonna load up some more on my 1050 w/Mark7 next. That should help elimate any issues with me pulling the handle inconsistently.

I have the same lot of Prima V as the above post

Shot 7 rounds through M&P 5" Core with Apex barrel

55 Degrees over CED Chrono at 10'

Zero 147 Jacketed HP  Seat Depth 1.147

3.4 gr with WSP primer, Rem case

845 fps Average

862 Hi

826 Lo

35 ES

13 SD

This particular lot is slower than I expected.  It is more like WSF in my gun.

Accuracy is good however

Primers completely normal. Every brand is a little different. Winchesters are softer but they are normal.

The Extreme spread concerns me however.  Next week I'll up it to 3.6 and re Chrono

Just got a 11 lbs of this same batch yesterday. Going to try and load up and test some 147 zero jhp and 147 bayou. It will be through 2 accu shadows and a cts lsp so hopefully we'll get a bit more cz barrel data in the mix.

I think you will.

I'd guess 3.2 will work for you around the 130 pf.

3.3 was getting me a min of 127 pf.

I'm going to try 3.2, 3.4, 3.6.

I'll probably just try with the JHPs since they're slower.

I just load the molys with the same amount of powder for practice.

I'm also perfectly fine shooting a bit hotter. I think I was at 135 pf at area 2 which was fine for me haha

Please post your findings. I'm interested in the JHP velocities. I've got some 147 gr RN Zeros I'm wanting to try.

B_RAD, that's not weird.  Lead and coated lead obturate better than jacketed and plated and contain more gas/pressure and thus generate more velocity.  Also, that BBI is seated down around .290 into the case (probably more), and your XTreme is going to be seated shallower.  That smaller initial combustion chamber size is going to earn him higher pressures the whole way up as well.  AND BBI have anecdotally been a little over-sized at .357, which again, better obturation than even other brands of coated lead.

50 feet/sec difference going from 147gr lead to 147gr plated is not surprising.  You aren't seeing anything anomalous here. ;)

Thanks for the info.

I've never switched lead for plated. Not with the same load anyways.

After all my plated bullets are gone I'm thinking of going jacketed. That'll be more more velocity drop.

Here are my results using Prima V for the first time.

CZ 75 Shadow 9mm

147gr SNS Flat Point .356

Mixed Cases, WSP Primer - Also tested Tula Primers and got same results.

OAL 1.145

3.2g Prima V - Batch # PB16055

Avg 849 FPS

124 PF (124.8)

SD 8.03

ES 32

High 862 fps / 126pf

Low 830 fps / 122pf

I'll bump up to 3.4.

I normally load using VV N320. 3.3gr gives me 894 fps / 132pf with the same bullet and OAL.

I'm loading to 3.4 now.  Haven't chronoed yet.

3.3 gr got me enough but I want a little more.

What kind of deviations in grains are you guys getting?

I started to shoot for 3.4 then it slowly crept up to 3.5 and seemed to finally level at 3.54 to 3.62.

Fairly inconsistent from what I've seen from Titegroup but SD in velocity will be the true test.

Prima V takes a while (around 100 throws) to get settled in the hopper and start throwing consistent charges.

Also every load session I do about 5-10 throws before I load an actual case.

Hmm interesting.

I have a hair clipper zip tied to my powder holder and was hoping that would settle the powder while I poured it. Now I'm wondering if the different sized pebbles and the vibration will make the smaller and larger ones separate top to bottom.

Here's my data from today's chrono run. I have 2 CZ accushadows (CZ1 and CZ2) and 1 CTS LSP (Tac Sport slide so longer barrel). CZ2 has historically had a faster barrel than CZ1.

All rounds are loaded to 1.15 OAL with 147gr Zero JHP

3.5gr

CZ1

High: Low: Ave.: S.D.: PF
898.9 864.6 878.1 9.2 129080.7

CZ2

High: Low: Ave.: S.D.: pf
912.2 862 888 13.5 130536

CTS

High: Low: Ave.: S.D.: pf
920.6 888.7 905.7 9.9 133137.9

3.8gr

CZ1

High: Low: Ave.: S.D.: pf
952.2 906 926.27 10.9 136161

CZ2

High: Low: Ave.: S.D.: pf
940.6 922.5 932.665 5.1463 137101

CTS

High: Low: Ave.: S.D.: pf
961 944.5 951.6 4.4 139885

4.0gr

CZ1

High: Low: Ave.: S.D.: pf
989.3 946.1 958.7 10 140928

CZ2

High: Low: Ave.: S.D.: pf
982.3 950.1 965.8 7.5 141972

CTS

High: Low: Ave.: S.D.: pf
999.4 970.6 979.9 6.8 144045

Everything shot a little faster than what I expected from what others had posted. Some strings had some extremely good SD while others not so much. I'd say overall SD is better than Titegroup from what I've seen.

Based on the FPS differences at different charge weights, I'm getting roughly 15FPS faster per .1 gr which is maybe just a tad lower than TG. I'd probably shoot for 3.6 to be way safe since I have no idea how this power reacts to temperature and elevation.

One thing I did notice was that when I compared off hand accuracy at 25 yards with the 3.8gr to my current match load (Same bullet and OAL, 3.45gr TG 134pf), the Prima V was not as accurate as the Titegroup. To be honest I never really understood how one powder could be more or less accurate (and still don't) but the results repeated themselves. Obviously I'm the biggest factor so I'll try and get someone else to shoot and confirm. Anyone else compare accuracy in powders?

In any case, for the time being I'll stick with TG for my match loads and use this powder for my practice moly practice rounds. Should help reduce the smoke and high heat of TG. (Do a few back to back bill drills and the gun gets hot quick!)
