Hello all,

I'm an LEO from Illinois and am considering a 2011 platform for a new duty gun and this site seems to have the most info on the platform I have found so far. Looking forward to learning more.

Hello,

Fellow LEO from MN.  Welcome to the forums and you are correct that this forum has a ton of information.  I am curious why you want to go with a 2011 vs any of the plastic fantastic guns?  I primarily run a 2011 in competition and it is not a gun that I would want to run as my duty gun.

Short answer: I don't like them.

I started my career with a p226 and switched to an m&p. I decided I didn't like the feel of the platinum m&p but I didn't care for the trigger of the sig. Now I carry a Dan Wesson Specialist and I like it a lot. It's a great gun. I'm just intrigued by the idea of a 1911 manual of arms in 9mm with high capacity. Why wouldn't you use the 2011 on duty?

I don't like external hammers and I really don't like metal mags as our department trains indoors and the concrete just crushes the feed lips.  Just not a typical duty gun.  Not saying it cant be done as the 2011 platform is a great gun, but just would not be my first choice.

It has, but it usually takes some time to get her running.  They tend to only like certain ammo and they are also the only platform I have had get bump fire and one went full auto (these were used guns and happened within 100 rounds of purchase).  You will want to keep up with your spring replacements.  I would also look into holsters, mag pouches, tac light, and other accessories first.

Welcome from the NW burbs. I shoot a 2011 in competition too. I think if you were comfortable carrying a 1911as a duty weapon, (I take it that is what the Dan Wesson Specialist is) there shouldn't be too much difference between it and a 2011, except possibly for cost... The only differences between a 1911 and 2011 are the mags, and the frame, and few other small parts, but most everything else is the same parts out of a 1911. Most if not all are 70 series though, not the 80 series with firing pin block if that matters to you.

I've done it with a two STI based pistols and two Factory Infinity pistols.  The only drawback is holster selection and magazine maintenance.  I've been told that Safariland holsters for railed 1911s will also work with 2011/Widebody pistols.  If that's true, that could solve the problem.

I've heard the same thing about the Safariland holsters, which is great because that's what I already use for my dan Wesson. I would think that Glock 21 mag pouches would work, but I also have gcode scorpions which are one size fits all.

Fantastic!  I am the USPSA match director for the Chillicothe Sportsmen's Club.  All of our matches are open to the public and we're always happy to see LE out there.

Feel free to get a hold of me if you are interested in coming out sometime.

Hey, fellow LEO from NYC... You actually have a choice in duty? I don't even get a choice unless it's from the approved list and that's with off duty as well. Rounds have to be 15 max and all triggers are 12lbs. That's why I just stick with fantastic plastic for competition as it translates familiarity to the non comp world.

Yeah, I cannot for the life of me understand the NY trigger.  Your guys that shoot high scores with that setup are awesome!!

If you shoot a lot it's not that hard... Qualification is easy standard 25,15,7 yds with 50 Rd course of fire at a torso. 78 out of 100 is minimum score with each round counting as 2 pts. Lowest common denominator when you count people who got hired and never shot or care to shoot before.

My very first steel challenge match that my friend convinced me to come to, I brought my duty G19 since the only other guns I had were my G26 (off duty with the same trigger) and my HK45 which I didn't want to use up my 45s. I ended up barely finishing the last stage due to trigger finger fatigue lol. I had to switch to my weak hand.

Welcome to the forum!

If you want to use a 2011 for duty, more power to you, but they are about the most expensive handgun to run when it comes to mags, holsters, maintenance, diagnosing problems, etc.  Not fun on a public service salary. Not to mention how finicky they are when it comes to anything other than perfect operating conditions, which is definitely a risk in law enforcement. Think of it this way - even though Ferraris have world-leading performance, no PD or military is fielding them as an issued duty vehicle. There are a lot of reasons for that and they are all identical to the reason that STIs and other 2011s are not typically fielded as duty guns.

I'm just throwing it out there, but maybe consider a CZ like the SP-01 Tactical instead?  Same manual of arms, all steel frames, 75% cheaper, almost never require any tuning, dead reliable, and absolutely proven all over the world as a duty gun.

Don't do it! 2011s are great competition guns but not tactical guns. You don't just pull a 2011 out of the box and it's good to go. It needs gun smithing, they don't run dirty, magazines are finicky, and chambers don't like factory ammo, especially issued ammo.
It sounds good even looks good, but it is bad decision. If the gun malfunctions in a match oh well; in real life you are black stripe on a badge. Now, if you're a desk jockey get an SV!

+1 I've seen 2011s jam during a match and all their owners clean their mags every stage.
