Cherokeewind
I haven't been able to find many Federal small pistol standard primers, but have located Federal small pistol magnum primers. Is there any reason to avoid using the magnum primers with reduced .38 Special or reduced .357 loads? Thanks, Jim Oliver
valerko
Only reason I see is , if they are over priced. Lol im using them in 9mm minor , no issues.
Taroman
The FSPM are my preferred primers for competition loads in 9mm and 38 mid. Chronographing them against FSP primers consistently gives me smaller ES and lower SD. Interestingly, the max velocity is either the same or a bit lower. These are NOT max loads or anything close to that. YMMV, proceed with caution. Now, if I could just find more FSPM...
pittpa
I have been using federal small pistol mag primers for over 20 years in 38 special for my 2.7-3.0g target loads of red dot, bullseye, wst, etc. This is because I was also loading 357 mag loads and did not want to bother with 2 different primers. My Python did not always set off other brands of primers when shooting double action, the reason I went to Federal primers in the first place. Back in the early days of the internet. Some people say to drop back a couple or a few tenths of a grain of powder with a mag primer. I wouldn't know, I never use regular primers for .38. Cherokeewind
Thanks for the replies. My main concern is/was about the possible difference in cup hardness since my revolvers are set up for the Fed SP primers.
Taroman
Hardness is not an issue. My revolvers are tuned as light as possible.
rdinga
I had a small herd of these in the closet back from the last component shortage. So I decided to start loading them in my .40 minor loads. The targets and steel plates can not tell any difference. I always use magnum primers in my .38 special loads.
AzShooter
I've got 10K of these and use them when I'm out of standard 100s. No problem lighting them off in my 929 with an extremely light action. I still get good groups and chrono results are about the same.
