Swinger Target Plans

Recommended Posts

I stumbled upon some scrap steel angle iron and tubing and want to construct my own swinger target stand. have seen lots of plans out there for PVC and wood stands, but I want to base mine off one of the manufacturers stands, like Nevco. My father in law is a welder, so no problem there. My main decision is what mount to use for the rotation point. I like Nevco's simplistic design with the through bolt, but wanted to see if anyone else had any other plans or designs to look at.

Thanks

This is a pretty simple design. Note the 1x1 box tube and "wings" on either side of the main plate that is the latch and trigger.

The cable is ran to the rear (turn it around and you can activate it from the front) and once you pick up the popper/tape the paper target just swing it down and it will latch itself.

Nice! One of your best designs, I think.

Do you ever have problems with the cable pulling away from the anchor on the other side of the popper? Ie the cable getting yanked out of the ground?

Depends on how wet the soil is and what kind of dirt your in, could be an issue until you have things where they need to be. The activator could be locked to the popper. You don't want tension to be enough to pull something from the ground, rather make it just enough to activate the target.

This is the most clever design I have come up with, it allows activation from any angle, by a pull, and the spring allows it to self re lock once you release the tension on the cable, 360 degrees it is the same release.

It amounts to two washers, a spring and a section of tubing sectioned in half. Saw cuts for the top washer so it turned into a "U" and when tension from the activator is eliminated it latches back.

If the activators are not too difficult to trigger you won't have an issue with them.

This is with string.

And what it would look like with low cover, in front of it.

Same activator "system" I used on the swingers above.

No reason to get fancy just make it work the exact same every time.

Much better to make target presentation the same for everyone than to come up with something tricky dicky.

If you want that you might as well make everything dynamic for everyone.

At that point you have to make the stage change as the shooter is shooting it, like this.

Is there any way you would be willing to upload those to youtube? Photobucket leaves a lot to be desired when sharing video.

I have no idea what is going on here but I want it.

A mix of electronic timed and activated targets. There are IR sensors, yellow paint caps at the front I walk around at the start of the video, that trigger the two turning targets with no shoot at the rear left, when that target "times out" (adjustable) it activates the single swinger on the left. The single swinger in return triggers the second IR sensor (red and blue caps) that activate the two pop ups with no shoot. When that target times out it activates the drop turn and the double swinger.

Kind of neat but an ass whipping when people can't realize they cant walk through the shooters path.

Yes, photobucket sucks as much as the camera I filmed those with back then.

Please supply a competent baby sitter and I will provide decent videos. If you can do the baby sitting part, I'll even provide ammo so you can give them a try.

Edit, I will see if I can find the original video.

Yup, just like that. We don't get many swingers at our local club, but that would be a fun one.

It's a Reed rattler. Pretty versatile, in how you can set it up presentation but can be more work to reset.

For the record you are a excellent designer, a level of creativity i haven't seen in many.

I've welded up several swingers for my club, friends and myself. Don't scrimp, use 2 of the bearings listed below. Your swinger will be consistent for a long time.

Thank you. Those were the bearings I was looking for.

Jmorris I tried to PM you but it said you cant accept any new messages. What is the counter weight? Is it just a pipe or is it filled with something heavy?
