N320 and coated bullets

Is n320 to hot to shoot with coated lead bullets.

Tried some over the weekend and they did fine but were a little smokey. Would lead be any different? I can lead and coated locally but I'm just starting to load .40 cal and don't know much bout it.

It's one of the less smoky powders I've used with lead or coated. The quality of the coating, or more specifically the quality of the coating application process, can make a big difference. Also make sure you're not scraping it off when seating, or cutting into it when crimping.

Uncoated lead will be pretty smoky but you may find it acceptable depending on wind, sun angle, etc... I prefer coated.

no smoke shooting N320 and Bayou 180s in my hybrid. Only thing the guys I shoot with talk about a slight electrical smell, like over heating/burning wiring. I don't notice it and I am shooting in south florida 90+F with 90%+ humidity.

N320 on a Bayou 180g shoots great for me. I have been loaded them since I found the bayous. I also have been having good luck with Winchester WSF. Its a little more dirty but a much cheaper and easier to find power if you want a slower burning power. I loaded WSF @ 1.180 OAL and can notice a difference in the recoil. (over the shorter rounds)

I worked up a batch of 180gr Blue Bullets with 4.5 of N320 which put me right at 170pf out of my M&P Pro .40.

Recently, I ordered some Blue Bullet 200gr and have been looking everywhere for load data. Finally found this: http://www.k8nd.com/documents/hl40sw.pdf Lots of load data for different bullet weights and types.

One of the VV-320 Loads shows 4.0 N320 over a Moly Coated TC getting 181.2PF.........can anyone verify similar results or am I comparing apples and oranges?

N320 with coated should be fine as long as seating the bullet doesn't scrape off the coating

If you are scraping the coating off, then you need to increase the bell on the case before you seat the bullet.

You should not scrape the coating off during reloading.

I'm loading 4.5 grains of n320 at 1.137 and it chronoed 172 using some coated bullets that are manufactured locally.

Can you tell me what the barrel length is?

N320 with Bayou 147's in 9mm and N320 with Bayou 200's in Limited. Very little smoke, runs fine.

Can you share more info on your reloading data (barrel length, COL, charge) if you do not mind?

I just got a ton of N320 and 200gr coated bullets, and so far, have gotten mixed/ confusing reloading info for the combo.

Thanks!

Thanks guys!

So what is your OAL with the Acme? Are you loading to SAMMI specs for 40

I load long 1.200 and cannot make major with N-320 at that low of a charge of 4.2. It takes me 4.7-4.8 with a 6 inch to make major using the 180 Acme.
