Gen 4 OEM extended mag release is Production legal

I've seen discussion on this in the past where some say the Gen 4 OEM extended mag release (part # 8794) isn't Production legal because the Gen 4 34/35 does not normally come from the factory with the extended release, unlike the Gen 3 34/35. So I decided to email DNROI and here's John's response:

"Appendix D4 item 21.6 reads:

21.6

Exchange of minor EXTERNAL components

Sights, firing pins, firing pin retainers, pins, extractors and ejectors MAY be replaced with OFM or aftermarket parts.

Any other components which are externally visible may ONLY be replaced with OFM parts which are offered on the specific model of gun or another approved gun from the same manufacturer except as specifically clarified below. Examples of external components which may only be replaced with OFM parts include (but are not limited to): magazine releases, slide stops, thumb safeties and triggers.

What this is stating is that an extended mag release offered on the gen 4 is legal and that as it is on the approved list along with a gen 3, you can replace the gen 3 mag release with an OEM mag release from Glock.

John"

I'm not sure why John says Gen 3 in the last part of the sentence (maybe a typo?) since I was only asking about the Gen 4, but right before that he says the Gen 4 one is also legal. I also had called Glock and they told me that you can order Gen 4s from the factory with the extended mag release, even though it doesn't come standard on the 34/35; therefore, it is "offered" by Glock on those models.

Hope this helps clear up any confusion. Now I need to install one and see if I actually like it better than the stock one :P

I just installed the extended mag release on my G34 and I think it makes a big difference. I've heard some say they don't notice much of a difference between the stock and extended mag releases on the Gen 4, but it definitely seems like it'll help me with mag changes. Although I'm a lefty and was having some trouble with the stock Gen 4 mag release (I actually found the Gen 3 easier to use as a lefty) so this should be a big improvement for me. The front edge is also more rounded making it more comfortable to press.

While I was playing around with changing mag releases I tried reversing it so I could use my thumb like righties do. Wow, that's so much easier! I've never tried reversing a mag release before since I have mostly Gen 3s. Although most of my mags are older ones without the ambi cut out, so I have to keep the mag release on the left side for now.

Two things

First, it seemed pretty clear the part was legal as it is offered on the gun from the factory.

Second, The reply from DNROI seems about as clear as all the others.

Agreed, it seems pretty clear to me as well that it's legal as long as it's offered from the factory that way, but I just wanted to be sure as I've seen it said a few times on here that it may not be legal. I also wasn't sure if it was in fact offered from the factory before calling Glock as the Gen 4 34/35 don't normally come with the extended mag release.
