mike4045
Tried to start computer this afternoon and it will not start. The power chord has power, batterylight comes on. No sound that hard drive is spinning. Holding down on power button does not help. How can you check that power button is working? How do you check to see if hard drive is working? Last time I took a laptop in for repair it was cheaper to buy a new one. Any ideas?
DoxaPar
Did you confirm it's not the monitor if its a desktop? If the monitor is getting a signal it will usually indicate so with a green light instead of a yellow / orange. Possible suspects include the monitor or video card (or motherboard). Even with a dead hard drive you should see something on the screen.
mike4045
It's a laptop. Plugged into tv and nothing.
Poppa Bear
Try removing the battery and try to start it on AC power alone. I had one where the charger went bad and it kept the computer from starting. Unless the computer is completely dead you should here some beeps as the MB is run through the bios checks. Miranda
you would think this has an easy answer. the button to tell it power up could be disconnected.... and the screen could fail to light... the hard drive may be spinning.... quietly. are you willing to disassemble it? I have a bad habit of giving my dead laptops to my brother and buying another. laptop... brothers are hard to buy. I unplug, pull the main battery and wait for 15 seconds to pass. put the battery back and try it. then try with the adapter. the adapter also fails... ooof try what you can and then go to the pc store. new laptops are nice. miranda

mike4045
It's dead again. Wish we had a repair place in town.
Miranda
oh. that sounds like a thermal failure. something gets warm, expands and disconnects. try putting it in the fridge for an hour. repairs are best done by getting a replacement unless it is new or expensive. miranda
Poppa Bear
My laptop was $2,500 new. I can now replace it two years later with a more powerful one for less than $1,000. Buy a new one and have the files copied over from the old one.
Mdooz
Could be a motherboard issue in which case would be an expensive fix. Best bet is to take it to a reputable repair shop. I dont suggest geek squad. Edit: holy crap I did not realize this was a 6 year old thread. Edited June 6, 2019 by Mdooz
