  1. Just got my first CZ (shadow custom from CZC). I'm used to loading my 147s to 1.14 OAL for an M&P Pro. Went to reload for the CZ and it wouldn't pass the plunk test with anything longer than 1.09 using BBI 147s. Xtreme and Everglades ammo 147 both pass the plunk test with my normal load at 1.14. I have a case of BBI sitting around and would like to use them, and I've tended to get better accuracy with coated vs plated out of my other guns. Just wanted to see if anyone else is going that short in their shadows? And if so how much are backing off the powder(if any)? I'm using titegroup in these loads. Not looking to ream the barrel just yet. Thanks in advance
  2. What is the longest practical 9mm OAL with a 124gr Precision Delta JHP in a 2011? What techniques or practices contribute to success when loading long 9mm OAL's? From reading here it seems like somewhere between 1.180" and 1.200" is the longest practical with the limiting issues being bullets falling out, bullet setback, or bullet tilt. Freebore shouldn’t be an issue for me since I measured 1.220” with the fired case technique. SV and MBX magazines so i'm good to 1.225"++ there. I’m loading on a 1050 with a Redding dies (could change to a tighter sizing die if recommended) and am planning to remove a little material from the expander in station 2 for more neck tension on jacketed bullets. I do minimal belling and just crimp to remove the bell. I use mixed range brass. I try to make sure all the cases are laying on their side when spraying them with 1 Shot lube to avoid getting much lube inside the cases. I have shot a test batch of 1.200" loads over slightly compressed 3N38 without issue. A little background if anyone cares.. I’m new to open. I am developing a load for a midlength (5” barrel) AKAI V6 2011 with 7 barrel holes. I like the idea of loading as long as practical to keep pressures as low as possible with a gun that is going to take a lot of powder to make major. I started out load development with 3N38 and was unable to make power factor with 8.9gr which was about the most I want to try to stuff in the case because of potential spillage. 8.9gr 3N38 124gr PD JHP 1.190" OAL slightly compressed Win SPP = 1273 fps or 158PF. Planning to try HS-6 next so it will likely not be compressed. I will of course do the thumb pressure test to check for obvious setback issues. I figure if I am successful with 1.190” the extra 0.025” is 1/3 of the way to 38SC length and softness/flatness/goodness. I realize that I would be better served by loading to 1.165” like everybody else and using this time to dry fire instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. Thanks, Greg
  3. Hi Guys - Newbie here, I have a brand new Dillon 650, with all the trimmings, and I am having trouble with reloading for accuracy on my first few attempts of reloading. I am not pleased with the results of my first reloads after investing close to 3 grand in all of my accessories and press. I am pretty sure I am doing something wrong. One obvious potential problem area, is that my OAL is inconsistent, it ranges from 2.240 to 2.267. Before I get to that, let me share my results. Constants: AR15- Faxon Gunner Barrel, 18" 1:8 twist, AIM Surplus Black nitride BCG, Timney3.5lb trigger - Sandbag bench shooting. 100 yard range - mild weather/wind Vortex Spitfire 3x Prism Scope Benchmark:. Federal Gold Medal Match 223 77 Grain BTHP - Result 0.45" average Mean Center Radius - 10 rounds group Reload: Sierra Match King 77 Grain BTHP Lake City Brass - mixed Once Fired - trimmed to 1.750 (range of 1.740 to 1.752) (flash holes not trimmed) Powder H335 22.5 grains CCI 400 primers Press: Dillon 650 OAL - Set to 2.25 but having inconsistency problems of 2.240 to 2.267 Result: 0.96" Mean Center Radius - 16 round group - Why is that my reloads are twice as inaccurate as my commercial stuff? I was hoping to get at least the same level of accuracy with the same bullets as the commercial stuff. The vortex spitfire reticle is not well suited for sub-moa shooting, its hard to see on this target, and when I turn on the illumination, it expands the size of the reticle. I could probably improve both groups with a scope that has more zoom to it. What am I doing wrong with my reload process, and is it normal to have that big of a difference in OAL on my bullet seating die? How can I fix that? Could that really cause such a difference in an AR? Thanks, Just_Me
  4. Just about to start loading for the 45 to be used in the R1. Anyone found the max OAL?
  5. I have been reloading for a G34 for years and it has been very forgiving to my terrible reloading skills. I have been reloading for a Tanfoglio Stock 2 about a year now and still have not settled on a reliable load. It has made me question a lot about my current thoughts on reloading. To the Enos hive mind I go for answers. Current load is 1.135 OAL, 4.8 gr HS-6, Federal primers, 147 gr Blue Bullet, and it comes in at a 130 PF. Questions: 1: In precision rifle shooting, you almost always get better accuracy by loading the OAL to be .010 - .015 off the lands of the rifling. For a pistol, does it really matter that much? In uspsa, the targets are so close (30 yards and in). I worry that loading with a longer OAL than 1.100 it will cause reliability issues with feeding and ejecting. 2: By loading with a longer OAL, do I have to use more powder to achieve a specific power factor? 3: I currently use HS-6. I have been told I should use a faster powder like Tight Group. Is a faster burning powder really going to generate less recoil and burn cleaner than HS-6? 4: I use a factory crimp die. How do I know if I am crimping too much? How do I know if I am not crimping enough? 5: I am having regular Stove pipes, 1 out of every 100 rounds. Aside from shooter error or gun issues, is their anything that could cause this that is only related to the ammo? I realize I have a lot of questions and I am sorry for posting so many all in one post. Problem is I have a lot of questions. Thanks in advance for the help.
  6. I finally setup my S1050. Everything seems OK with one exception. I am having inconsistent OAL readings. During my initial test rounds, I was using random range brass (mixed head stamps). After reading a couple of threads, I decided to sort my brass by head stamps and give that a try. I tried a few things and was still getting inconsistent OALs, so I decided to order the Redding Competition Pro Micrometer seating die. After setting up the Redding die, I am getting a more consistent reading, but I have noticed a two scenarios: 1) When I adjust OAL for a single round, I can get a perfect reading (Say 1.1350) most of the time. However, when I start loading rounds (and the shell-plate is full) my OAL have a variation. It will be either shorter or longer (Sorry I don't recall which one exactly). 2) If I try to adjust the seating die with shell-plate full, it seems to take a long time (and rounds) before I can get one accurate OAL. And if I remove a case or two (To by-pass primer station) the reading will be off again. I believe my process / approach could be incorrect? What am I doing wrong? Is my shell plate too loose? (Press is brand new). The closest I can get with a shell plate full is a .002 variation (Either short or long). I will appreciate any input/suggestions on this.
  7. Hello, I am a new reloader. I am loading 9mm. I see the SAAMI drawing with its value for Over All Length of the Cartidge. This seems to be listed as OAL or COAL in different sources. It seems dependent on which reloading manual you first read to describe the measurement of the length of the Cartridge. Either way this is the Maximum length that firearms manufactures use when they design their products. When I look at Load Data I noted that Lee makes it perfectly clear that the OAL they list for a powder charge is the Minimum Over All Length for the Cartidge. Hodgdon, for example, lists an OAL in their Load Data. This value is generally understood to be the length of the cartridge that they tested in their laboratory to create their velocity & pressure. With a 9mm there is a max of 1.169 listed and load data is typically down around 1.1 depending on the powder you are using. i have read to use a length that functions reliably in your firearm or firearms. With the longest that will function being the best choice. I measured factory ammo and it seemed to be in the 1.15 range. I see many reloaders in forums using the min value in the powder data to set their length. This seems odd to me for 9mm. Is there a reason ? http://www.saami.org/PubResources/CC_Drawings/Pistol/9mm Luger - 9mm Luger +P.pdf
  8. Trying to get a good idea of where to start with a 135 RN with titrgroup out of my CZ accushadow. I currently have have been loading 165 RN xtreme with 3.0 gn at 1.150 OAL. This runs smooth and soft out of my gun 100 percent of time. My oress currently is set with an OAL of 1.130 for the BBI. But I'm pretty sure I go load this longer with no problem. At 1.130 it passes the plunk test. Also if anyone has experience with the 135 your thoughts on accuracy v. a 147 would be appreciated Any thoughts and insight as to starting grains and OAL would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
  9. I have discovered it matters whether or not there are cases on the shell plate when you set the seating die. I think. I wanted 1.151". (4.1 g Titegroup for 9mm Hornady FMJ RN if it matters) Originally I set the seating die with only one round on the shell plate and I tested it that way before I started reloading. So out of nowhere I decided to test rounds as they were coming out. Waddya know, there were ALL 1.158" on the nose. .007" too long. Interesting. So right at the moment I case-gauge every single round I make and my gun loads FMJ RN longer than 1.161 anyway, so there never was a safety issue. I tested it with a single round. Dead-on, 1.151" O-o-kay, why is it loading longer with cases on the shell plate? Because the ram isn't going as high. Why is it not going as high? Because something is stopping it. What the hell is stopping it? Probably the sizing die. The implication is I need to back off on the sizing die .007". Which, alas, also implies I'm going to be re-setting my powder die and my crimp die back .007" also. Which I don't want to do as I've got them both set dead-perfect. So theoretically, now and in the future, I need to set the sizing die and then set the seating die with a case in the sizing die. Correct? I actually re-set the die with cases in place and finally got my 1.151" length. But it hit me that would make the last round or two too short. Sure enough, 1.148". However, I could stop that in the future by sizing-but-not-priming a dummy shell.

    P320 OAL?

In reading in the 40 S&W reloading section, some are loading out to a length of 1.180 or more. I was thinking the target OAL was 1.130. I'm finding that my loads over the 1.130, like the 1.135 are not passing the plunk test in the barrel. I don't know how to tell if the 1.135 are not passing because they are to long or the bell in the case mouth is not tapered ever so slightly causing it to fail... Thoughts?
  11. After doing an enormous amount of snooping and skulking about online for information on the XL650 and Dillon in general for long range hunting / precision rifle loading - I got the press for Christmas and ordered all the various accessories last week. I was particularly interested in runout, OAL variation and accuracy of the powder measure with extruded powders. I ran my first box of shells through the press today - 7mm Weatherby Mag using IMR 4831 powder and barnes 140gr TTSX bullets. I am using standard toolheads, a standard RCBS two-die set, and the Dillon Belted Magnum powder measure system for this particular caliber. After some general fiddling and flailing trying to get it all set up, I threw my first charges as follows (looking for 73.0 grains of IMR 4831) 73.0, 72.7, 73.0, 73.2, 73.1, 73.3, 73.3, 73.2, 73.4, 72.9, 73.2, 72.8, 72.7. I was thrilled with that level of accuracy from an off-the-shelf measure with extruded powder and from there I just started cranking. I measured runout on the loaded rounds using the Hornady LNL dial indicator and found runout generally negligible in the +- .002 range, but most of the loaded ammo was dead on with less than .001" runout. For a $35 2-die RCBS set and nothing else fancy for this particular caliber - I was impressed. I noticed a fair amount of OAL variation in the loaded rounds (something along the lines of .0050"+-) and was initially a little concerned, but then I took a handful of bullets out of the box and measured them. the variation in OAL of the loaded rounds seemed to be consistent with observed variation in bullet length from the factory. I will check it again using a micrometer seating die for my next batch, but I am extremely satisfied to say the least. As far as setup goes I got the inline fabrication ultramount, ergo handle, shellplate bearing kit with low mass detent ball, and press lighting kit. I ordered the casefeeder (which works incredibly well) and polished the internals of the powder measures to a high shine. I considered the locking toolheads, but decided against them unless OAL/runout turns out to be an issue. So far it looks to me like its not going to be a problem.
  12. Range trip today. Loaded .40 s&w long. Winchester once fired brass CCI #400 small rifle primers 180g LRNFP Winchester Autocomp 1.249 OAL Tanfoglio hunter 6in barrel 10mm 5g 1. 885 2.869 3.881 4.906 5.862 Average FPS: 880 Average PF: 158.4 Notes: crazy accurate and soooo soft! 5.5g 1.947 2.958 3.947 4.953 5.932 Average FPS:947 Average PF:170 Notes: nice load. I'm going to try 5.3-4 see if I can get in the 168-9pf. Use this for limited. Not as accurate as the 5.0g but really nice. Not too snappy. 6.0g 1.1019 2.1009 3.1029 4.970 5.1041 Average fps: 1013 Average pf: 182 Fun to shoot. Brass and primers are fine. No bulge. Snappy and as accurate as the 5.5g load.
  13. When I started reloading I didn't know what to do, so I got in good with someone who did. Bayou 147 grain flatpoint 3.0 grains of Titegroup Loaded to 1.14 OAL Range brass Winchester primers Last year I was shooting a Glock and this load was fine (soft and accurate) but next year I'm buying a 2011. I plan to test my existing load first but what are other 2011 shooters doing? Moly bullets? Jacketed bullets? Specific powder? OAL lengths? (I plan to do some actual testing in the spring too but like to have the discussion in the meantime)
  14. I use a S&W M&P Pro and was wondering what OAL using Montana Gold bullets you all find works well in that gun. These are the various weights I load: 115 gr. CMJ 124 gr. CMJ 147 gr. CMJ 147 gr. HP Any suggestions are welcomed!
  15. I just bought a STI Edge in .40 and plan to start shooting Limited, but have never loaded .40 S&W or for major power factor. I have been using VV N320 in my 9mm Production loads and would like to use it for my STI also. My initial plans are to use Bayou 180gr poly coated FP bullets. SAAMI specifications call for an OAL between 1.085 and 1.135 with flat point bullets. I've heard that a lot of STI Edge shooters load their .40 rounds "longer" to feed better. Is loading longer worthwhile? How long is longer? Do any of you have a major load using N320 and 180gr FP bullets for an STI Edge in .40 S&W that you would be willing to share?
  16. Do you load long on a CZ like you would on a 2011? What do you recommend on OAL? The gun is a CZ 75 Tactical Sport in .40.

    115JHP

Ran out of Zero 125 JHP's. Have been loading these at 1.160 OAL for my open .9 using SVI mags. Now I just got Sierra 115 JHP's, and can not load them as long- profile of bullet head is shorter than the Zero's. SO who has a starting OAL using 115 JHP's? I use True Blue at 7.8gr to make a nice 175pf. Just looking for a starting OAL-
