  1. Around 20% of my rounds failed to fire. I took my gun to the gun shop and they said it worked fine, and it had to be the ammo. Now I'm not sure if it's the powder or the primers. I am loading 3.9 grains Titegroup over 115 grain Eggleston Munitions .356 coated lead 9mm. The TiteGroup I am using is coming out of an eight-pound container. I've had it around 3 years and there's only about 1 pound left. I have kept in a cool and dry closet, but I live in south Louisiana so I am wondering if humidity could be the issue. The primers were CCI 500 Small Pistol Primers. The ones that didn't fire don't look right. There is a tiny dent where the striker hit them. Normally when I get a mis-fire I shoot it again and that works. Not this time. The best answer I can come up with is it's the primers but I don't really know. One thing is different about this batch of primers. I bought them off the shelf at Bass Pro instead of getting them (presumably) fresh from the factory. Have any of you ever seen anything like this?
  2. I started breaking in my new CK Arms Hardcore .40 S&W, using a variety of commercial ammo. I thought the reliability I observed with the ammunition might be useful to others, so I'm sharing these data below. One box per manufacturer was sampled. Interestingly, where FTFs were observed, the first instance experienced within the first three rounds fired from that box. From each box, I sampled the ammo OAL, expecting the longest to feed most reliably. The results didn't support that assumption. I sampled six rounds from each box of 50. MBX 140MM magazines were used. Brand: Average OAL, Median OAL, Std Dev OAL, Failure to Feed Experience: LAX New 180g: 1.1201, 1.1190, 0.0038, None PMC 180 fmg: 1.1244, 1.1235, 0.0027, Frequent Fiocchi 170g fmjtc: 1.1266, 1.1265, 0.036, Frequent Monarch brass case 180g tmj: 1.1201, 1.1185, 0.0034, None Aquila 180g fmj: 1.1088, 1.1090, 0.0010, Frequent Winchester Train 170g FMJ: 1.1244, 1.1238, 0.049, None Remington UMC 180g fmj: 1.1268, 1.1255, 0.0038, None Winchester White Box 180g: 1.1225, 1.1210, 0.0045, Constant Magtech: this was ammo borrowed at the range; it wasn't measured, but no FTFs were observed over 10 rounds. The good news is there are a variety of inexpensive sources which ran fine. I look forward to more testing as break-in progresses. Scott
  3. Can you guys please help me diagnose my Failure to Feed issue that I witnessed today during practice. The rim of the case did not rise up and under the extractor. I shot roughly 150 rounds prior to failure and another 200 after it without any failure what so ever. Gun was thoroughly cleaned and extractor w. spring was replaced prior to the practice. I changed the extractor since during my last match I got a failure to eject and also during an recent practice. Facts, CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow 11 lbs recoil spring (CZUB) used for ~10k 13 lbs main spring same usage New extractor & spring (changed before practice) Regular SP-01 18rd mags with springs that have been used for ~15k Chamber is nice and shiny. Factory ammo. The new extractor does not bind or feel rough during the loading action, not even if I slowly assist the slide forward when loading. Everything is smooth. Can it be that the mag springs are getting old? Can it be that the recoil spring is getting old? Can the extractor be sitting to shallow, need to remove some material from the extractor "depth pad"? Combination of above? I do not think that I bumped the slide stop lever, this might induce problems during slide reciprocation. I've had problems with that earlier due to really high support hand grip. The attached picture of the recoils spring is old vs new (11 lbs czub).
  4. I have a new Edge in .40, 126mm mags with Grams Spring/Follower Kit 11 Coil and Arrendondo +1 international pads, everything is new. The problem: Won't feed Federal 155gr JHP, which I have a lot of. It does feed if I rack the slide manually, but I need to do this every round. It also FTFs 180gr FMJ about 40% of the time. What happens is that the nose of the cartridge gets hung up on the bottom of the feed ramp. What I've tried: I lightly polished the feed ramp with 600 grit sandpaper (pushing with an eraser), it feels and looks smoother but not much else, I didn't go too long so maybe I should try a bit more? I don't want to mess up the ramp's geometry though. Should I try bending the follower up a bit? I've read about this too. I know this gun prefers ammo loaded long, but I can't reload right now and it's tough to find long loaded ammo. I'd like to get this running 100% on factory ammo. Thanks for any suggestions, I've been all over the forums and feel like I've read everything. I guess the bottom line is, should I try bending a spring/follower up? Should I polish the ramp more? I guess I'm more comfortable with bending a spring than damaging a feedramp. Thanks
  5. Dear Open division folks, I'm fairly new to Open division shooting and mostly shoot IPSC Production. I'm left handed and eyed. This thread will be organized by questions followed by my comments and observations: 1. What is more important for controlling recoil on an Open gun - grip tape or a thumbrest? I ask because I have a Bul M5 9x19 Open gun (shown in the photo below), and the first time I applied grip tape, it interfered with my ability to deactivate the grip safety, which has a very low profile, so I took the tape off. I expected the red dot to jump around a bit when firing, and was not disappointed, although sight recovery is very fast. Should grip safety deactivation be standard operating procedure for competition only 1911s? Should I make a bump on the bottom of the grip safety for more consistent activation, and how far away from the grip safety should any grip tape end? 2. Are thumbrests and thumb indexing mutually exclusive? When I use a thumbrest on my Open gun, which is currently installed on the right side mount, above the front trigger guard and level with the bottom of the slide, my support thumb is above horizontal when pointing the gun. In Production division I am accustomed to pointing the thumb at the target and this does not longer work, unless I visualize differently. I still find dot acquisition to be time consuming, especially after large traverses if my strong wrist moves. Tips on rapid dot acquisition are also welcome. 3. Should left handed folks be using thumbrests in the first place? Especially for minor power factor? Oftentimes, if I have to take my support hand off the gun during a stage and reestablish a two handed grip later, I find my thumb holding the thumbrest too close to the gun, resulting in a failure to eject as a spent case is retarded by my thumb and the slide goes on vacation until I realize what is going on. 4. Should I train Open if I compete Production? I find that shooting is more fun and smoother using an Open gun, but then so does everyone else. Should I compete the same way as I train, or should I concentrate on using one gun? Nowadays I train about 100 rounds a week in a single session. There's more to the sport than sight pictures. I also carry my Production gun concealed on occasion. Any responses and tips from people who have been there and done that already would be welcome. Thanks - Lior.
  6. Installed a Dave's Metal Works Speedloader on 1100 Mag with a NC +4 feed tube and NC follower. Took it out to a 3gun match and about 20% of the time I would get a failure to feed. It appears the lifter would not drop down far enough to allow the next shell to feed in. There was some issue with the install and the roll pin that holds the lifter and speedloader was very tight. The only thing I can thing of is the carrier group got bent putting in the pin or the pin is bent and needs to be punched out and a new one installed. Any ideas what needs to be fixed or anyone in the Indianapolis, IN area that works on 1100 that I can take it too? It has been a battle to get this gun to run well for 3gun and any help would be welcome. Really like the gun, just need to make it reliable. Thanks, Dave
