Prior to getting into competition I always thought that firearms were indestructible and lasted indefinitely. However, I was recently told that, for a semi-auto, each time the slide cycles it scrapes off a miniscule amount of metal from the slide rails. Eventually, the slide rails will get so thin that the frame will need to be replaced, or the rails will outright crack because they're so thin. On that note, do revolvers also suffer from something similar to this, or revolvers last longer? For revolvers I've heard that frame stretching can be a problem. So, if I do something like cerakote on the slide rails, will that stop the wearing done on the slide rails, or can that not be done, or it won't stop the wearing down of the slide rails? Thanks

I am looking for info regarding your experience with firing pins for S&W 617s with the frame mounted firing pin. I am interested in the manufacturer and length that has allowed you to get the lowest D.A. Pull possible. My action has been polished, I am using an Apex mass driver but can’t get reliable ignition below 7 1/4 pounds. Also has anyone changed the profile of their firing pin for better ignition? Thanks

Okay today was the first day I have been able to set up a stage at home and take a stab at running my new 625JM with alpha X and a moonclip server. Man I am rusty and am in need of some help on either setting up some stages here at home or setting up some classifiers that will really help me improve my skills. It was definitely humbling to go from shooting a 6” STI Eagle and running the stage as I would for limited vs trying to run a 4” 6 shot. Wow! It definitely takes a lot of skill and practice. So help/advise would be greatly appreciated.

Sunday, April 28th, 2019....IPSC 66 (also known as the Wayne County Raccoon Hunters Club in Romulus, Michigan) will be hosting our first ever Southeast Michigan Lo Cap Championship for Single Stack, Production, L10 and Revolver Divisions only. 9 stages, 230+ rounds in a 1 day format for a $60 match fee of American Funds (just an FYI to our many Canadian competitors). This is our normal shooting weekend so nothing special has to be planned for by those that try to make out match every month. For those $60, you will get a the above mentioned 9 level III stages, 230+ rounds, plaques for all recognized divisions and most classes and entry into the gun giveaway raffle that we have. We are looking to give away 2 1911's and 2 polymer guns to by random draw to any competitor that pays their match fee. (if you DQ at the match, you are out of the drawing...…..). We are only planning on having up to about 96-100 shooters maximum, so look at practicescore to enter your info and send your check with match entry fee to me (info is on practiscore…...or you can call me or email if you have further questions...). If this goes well (and we think that it will, then in October we will have the High Cap Championship for Limited, Open, Carry Optics and PCC) then we can start making this an annual type of event to kick off the outdoor season and possibly end the outdoor seasons here in Michigan. I recently acquired a S&W 625 .45acp revolver. I'm sure it was owned by a competitive shooter because the trigger has a stop installed on the rear surface and there is a ball detent in the top of the crane which securely locks the cylinder in place. The problem is when the trigger is pulled quickly for rapid fire the cylinder often jumps two chambers rather than just one. It cycles normally in slow fire and single action. Upon initial examination I determined the hammer block had been removed. I understand this is a common but by no means safe procedure to speed up the action of the revolver. I replaced the hammer block but it made no difference to the skipping problem when in rapid fire. All this testing has been done with a empty pistol. I'm not about to risk life and limb with a mistimed revolver. Returning it to S&W is an option but I'm comfortable replacing parts on the gun if I know where to start.

I found a firing pin in my spare parts kit today and would like help identifying it, it is for a S&W Revolver with the new style frame mounted firing pin, this sample is .499 long has a rounder striking face than an Apex and has a ring around the hammer end. I installed this one today in a 617 and was able to lower the double action pull by about 1/2 pound with much more reliable ignition. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

One of our local clubs sponsor a steel shoot that limits revolvers to Six shots with iron sights, my 67 year old eyes prefer a longer sight radius than my 5" 625. My current options are purchasing a model 25-2 with 6" barrel or converting my model 25 classic for moonclips as reloads are on the clock and most stages require a minimum of 10 shots. A 610 6" would be ideal however their costs are prohibitive the minimum power factor for this match is 140, are there any other options I should be considering?

A thought popped into my head a few days ago to get my dad a fairly nice Christmas present at a fairly low cost: load him up some 38's for his Ruger Security Six which he enjoys. I don't shoot .38 myself but I keep the dies around because I have a couple of friends who do and I've loaded for them a couple of times as a gift/favor to trade. The objectives are accuracy and mild recoil--not that .38 is ever particularly spicy like .357 can be, but I know it can be like a .22 when you want it to be. I wish I could have time to work up a load but he'll be at the house on Thanksgiving so I want to be able to have it ready for then and the whole batch done. What's to know about the difference between 148gr WC's and 158gr SWC, generally speaking? I'll be using Lee dies on my 550. I'll consider cast lead, coated, or plated. Thoughts?

After getting off the ground last autumn with our first Revolver-specific USPSA match at Oak Park Sportsmens Club in Plainfield, IL (southwest of Chicago), we're going ahead with another. The club's overall match schedule is too crowded with matches and we can't get a separate date this year. So we're just declaring that the regular-season November match (second Sundays) is going to be a "Revolver" match. Since we still have to allow all those other people on the range, we'll let them, but as before, this match will be carefully designed to be as eight-shot hostile as possible. Yeah, those 627s and 929s are going to be discriminated against as much as possible, too. Some of us are stuck in the past with the "sixgun" thing- Elmer didn't write a book called "Eightguns", after all. To encourage participation, we've dropped the match fee to all Revolver Division entrants to $5. Plus, the winner of the division who isn't named "Phil Proietti" will be provided with a box of Federal primers in either small or large pistol size. We will feature six stages most likely, five large field courses in our inimitable style (with the hostility added) and a classifier. I'm lobbying for another stage space but it's probably not happening. Oak Park Sportsmens Club (NI10) is about 40 miles southwest of Chicago just off I-55 at the IL Rt 126 exit (old US 66). It could be that i'm just not intelligent enough but I can't seem to find anything on Safariland's website, haha. I use a safriland belt with ELS clips for limited, single stack and 3-gun. I really like the els setup, but had no clue I could do the same with the holster (QLS). I ordered one ready to have the ultimate "swiss army" belt only to find out it doesn't mate to the 014 holster. Am I missing something ? The versatility of the belt is great but holsters have to be unbolted to change them out. Also does anyone know of a revolver setup for the ELS setup. I can't find them on the website. I'm using a S&W 625, with the straight posts for moon clips. Thanks

Hi Folks: I am trying to improve the trigger pull on my 686-8 (frame mounted firing pin) and have tried the Wolff Type 2 main spring. I can not get it to work. I have switched to federal primers, am reseating them, but I keep getting light primer strikes. Sometimes I get a good solid hit on the primer, then sometimes it looks like it is barely dented. This happens reproducibly. I have installed an extended firing pin and reduced weight firing pin spring and the hammer is bobbed. It seems like I can't get 100% unless I am in the 7-9 lb pull range. At the moment I am pretty close to 8 but switched back to the original main spring and backed out the strain screw, which I am not so happy to have to do. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. John

I should just leave this one alone, so I'll state up front I'm not going to get into any arguments over it. The rule is pretty simple, easy to read and understand. There are no glossary definitions of finger or trigger guard. Those would seem self-evident. There are glossary definitions for loading, reloading, and unloading. So I get told tonight someone got DQ'ed for finger in the trigger guard at a recent match while initially loading on an unloaded start (scoop the gun and ammo up off the barrel head and go). Okay, I think, stuff happens. But... He was a revolver shooter. The cylinder was open. I know, this has probably already been tried in arbitration a hundred times before and went nowhere, lesson is still keep your finger clear of the trigger guard. BUT.... It was his little finger and it was in the trigger guard BEHIND the trigger. Cylinder open, pinkie behind the trigger, God couldn't make that gun go off! And I know, you bring this to me as a member of an arbitration committee and I'm going to uphold the DQ as it makes no allowances for wheel guns, cylinders, pinkies, or WHERE in the trigger guard the finger was... But.... just damn. Discuss, argue, go back and forth, have a big time. Or ignore it completely. I'm just tossing it out there. (And the wheel gun didn't have a spurless hammer.)

I really wish I had started shooting revolvers sooner. I sold most of my guns when I went overseas for school and now that I'm back am rebuilding a collection of "basic" guns of which a .22 pistol is mandatory. Because everyone that I know has a Buckmark or a Mark II/III I decided that I would be different. I got a revolver, a class of gun I was heretofore utterly unexposed to. Searching for a suitable gun I came across this guy, a secondhand 617, and it is hands down the best handling .22 pistol I've ever shot. It is a laser on the range. Suffice to say, I appreciate revolvers now. I have seen the light. My next purchase is definitely going to be a 686.
